Thankyou for the invitation by the Midland committee to once again judge at their Championship show held in conjunction with the Houndshow. Many improvements on the previous year but still a long day for all involved especially the dogs. I had decided that if the weather was too hot then I would take the judging inside, as it happens the heavens opened before the Houndshow judging had been completed so we all had to dash for cover.
A bittersweet appointment having just lost my beloved Krystal, my Best of Breed warmed my heart with his superb construction & personality, he is a joy to handle & watch showing. Delighted to award this 'baby champ' that all important Challenge certificate with his Champion title he certainly deserves . The day was complete when he strode to Best in Show under Derek Smith.

Overall the quality was rather mixed, the winners good the principle winners very good. The same old issues short upper arms & necks, short keels & ribbing, shoulders too far forward & if people didnt already know I put a lot of store on feet! Remember dachshunds are a digging hound so untrimmed or splayed feet & long or hacked nails will not do. On the plus side there are some promising youngsters especially in the bitches which makes for keen competion which can only be good for the breed, all having merits to appeal to a variety of different judges. It is apparent that the imports & their descendents are proving a great asset to breeders.

1st HARRIS & MCLACHLANS ZARCREST BLACK SMITH – Excellent stallion B/T male with which to start off the day. Gorgeous head with exquisite eyeshape with kind but alert expression, good reach of neck & depth of body for a youngster, keel sweeping through & well back, excellent bone, big well padded feet, correct bend of stifle & rounded rear, moved with style showing his pads going away, such a happy dog keen to do everything for his handler, topped off with a straight shiny jacket BPD Best Puppy in Breed . Welldone.

2nd LATHAM-JACKSONS DOLYHARP PURCELL OF URISHAY – Smaller neat compact lad not as houndy as the winner showed well being very well schooled.

PD 5 ENTRIES 0 ABS

1st BOYLES ZARCREST BLACK BREWER – Litter brother to previous class winner , just not as mature & together today as his sibling. Another elegant showy hound of lovely type. Excellent head & eye strong underjaw, good length of neck, carrying good width allthrough, held a level topline & super underline not cutting up, lovely angulation, another with super bone thick well padded trimmed feet.

2nd WOODS WILDSTAR WREWARD – Smaller B/T of a different type being slightly taller & not as long. Excells in head dark eyes with lovely expression, well constructed allthrough scores highly in ribbing & short loin, an easy mover just not the width of the winner.

3rd HIGGINS RALINES JUST JEWELS

JD 6 ENTRIES 0 ABS

1st WOODS WILDSTAR WROBINSON – My notes say ' beautiful' & that he is , this young red dog just shines, his coat is like fire so flat & correct his outline is breathtaking. He oozes quality the ideal balance of height to length being the size breeders of miniatures should aim for, he has the substance & bone & his feet are just wonderful, padded nicely rounded neat black nails & thick black pads. Good front, sweeping keel, ribs sprung & carried right down his body to a short loin. To top this you can see the joy in his face as he strides out around the ring. CC.BOB.BIS.

2nd BUCHAN & KERSLAKES DEVONWOOD PIPPIN AT HELENIUM – Smaller B/T with good length of bone, long neck sweeping keel , well ribbed giving level topline not the aplomb on the move of the winner.

Conical head with a good eye helped by black eyerims, thick well set leathers, excellent bone, ribbing carried wellback giving level topline into ultra short loin, neatest short hocks, showed his pads on the move.

2nd BREESES SILKDOWN PHEONIX RISING – Bigger Shaded Red hound of excellent type. Good head, well set ears with lovely fringing, very attractive boy with heavy coat strong bone & feet, tailset spoton & beautifully plumed tail a sweeping continuation of the spine.

1st LOCKETT-WALTERS RALINES ROYAL REBEL – Excellent B/T a head to die for with correct tan markings. Well constructed dog, good neck, shoulders correctly placed & angulated, legs carried well under body, well filled front , another with good feet including the black 'thumbprints' on his toes. Did enough but did not project himself to show off his attributes.RCC

2nd BROOKS LYNDARLEA JUST ANDY – Bigger longer cast cream with attractive head & expression helped by lovely dark pigment, big bone heavy cream coat of good texture. I think 2 shows in one day had caught up with him as he was sluggish on the move & did not move out.

JB 11 ENTRIES 2 ABS

Excellent class of young bitches all the 5 placed bitches were quality & had many virtues

1st METCALFES METADALE ARIADNE – Attractive Red bitch of excellent size & proportions, a balanced bitch of very good ratios, again everything enhanced by her dark pigment , nose, eye rims mouth nails & pads. The young bitch was a bit unsettled by the switching of handlers but when she settled she was a picture from all angles, moved with drive & ease. RCC

2nd WOODS WILDSTAR WYNNONA – Litter sister to my DCC winner though taller & more rangy. This flame red beauty was being a bit of a madam today. So so elegant I dont believe we have seen the best of her yet. I think a litter will fill her provide the finish & she will be an exceptional specimen of the breed.

3rd ROYLANCES ABBLIS IMMORTALITY – Completed a trio of excellent red bitches all sired by different dogs which can only be seen as positive for the future.
