I was very honoured to be invited to judge this variety at this prestigeous show. The highlight of the day must surely have been the visit from HRH Prince Michael of Kent who told us his first ever dog, as a small boy, was a Dachshund! On today's showing I'm afraid I found the breed to be full of mediocrity, the good ones really stand out. Thick skulls, popped eyes, lack of neck, poor shoulders, poor fronts, flat feet, lack of ribbing both in spring and particularly in length, poor pigmentation, particularly in nails, these things were the order of the day. Sorry to be so negative but this is what I found. On the plus side, the majority of exhibits had good temperaments and were well presented. My stewards, Paul Hayes and Jennifer Hiscox were exemplary. Many thanks to them.

MPD (2) 1 Drady's Indiko I Am The Music Man. Pleasing headed b/t with a decent front and a lovely coat, needs a better temperament. 2 McCarthy's Nagshall Double Dig. Lovely light red, thought he would be my winner, not decided yet whether to be Arthur or Martha!
PD (7) 1 Phillips' Summerview Yogi Bear. Classy choc/tan, stood away in this class, lovely head on good neck, good front and topline, well made and a good mover, lovely coat and condition, can be naughty with his tail at times. Best PD. 2 Poole's Findowrie Mr Bumble. Very pleasing headed red, lovely bone and feet, sound on the move but not the topline of winner. 3 Metcalfe's Metadale Ramesses. Very well constructed silver dapple, liked his head very much, lovely neck and topline, lovely front and feet, sound and holds himself together going round. 2 Higgins' Ralines Just Jewels. Found this b/t. Just a touch skully and a little short of neck, good body and lovely condition, good going round. 3 Broad's Eldmour Sea Lord Of Dinkidudlor. Thought this dark red could be my winner, he has such a pleasing head and a lovely outline and coat, front lets him down.

Very typy b/t, pleasing head with lovely eye, so well ribbed up, moves very well, could use a little more neck. 3 Mortlock's Metadale Leandros At Hertsmerry. This dark red looked most unhappy, he is a nice dog, could just be a little better let down behind.

Gorgeous cream, such a lovely head, eye and neck on this girl, lovely front and so lovely to go over, fabulous outline stacked, she too is beautifully sound, just needs to use her quarters going round. 3 Metcalfe's Metadale Brunnhilde. Lovely head and eye on this red, very well put together, just needs to learn to be a showgirl.

Pretty silver dapple, very good head on her lovely body and rib, movement disappointing.
