Thank you to the Officers and
Committee for inviting me to judge Best in Show today. The class judges sent
through some very nice dogs. I was a bit disappointed that more than I would
like had loose elbows. The puppies were a delight and they were confident and
out going they all deserved being in the line up. They should all bring their
owners fun and success. Although there were no miniature veterans the three I
did have were a credit to their owners, not an easy decision on this occasion.
ANY VARIETY J&C MEMORIAL OPEN STAKES 1 – Matzell Martinella – Miss M Norton A
very nice Red Smooth bitch, good conical head with a
good well set ear, a reasonable length of neck into a well laid shoulder, good
ribbing and she holds her top line at all times, She has ample well muscled hind
quarters. She moves with ease an drive.
2 – Rozamie Tiger Feet – Mr J 7 Mrs J Williams Brindle Mini Smooth. He was a
stand alone Miniature in this class but was going to be shrouded by the bigger
exhibits. He has a very pleasing head, good ear set and nice almond shaped eyes.
Personally being picky I would like a little more length of neck, but that said
he does have a well laid shoulder and good tight elbows. He has a well supported
top line, and again is well muscled with a nice flowing movement.
BEST IN SHOW
Tendrow Rubens Hagrid – Mrs V Phillips Wire Haired. A lovely example of the
breed. He is a bold strong looking dog who just radiates “fit for function” he
has a strong head with a strong muzzle, his ears are well placed. He had a long
slightly arched neck, his shoulders a well laid with strong tight elbows. His
keel runs well back and he has no exaggeration over his short loin. His rear
quarters are well muscled and he moves with purpose and drive,
RESERVE BEST IN SHOW
Winterfield Lucky Star – Mrs R & Miss SJ Herald A Black & Tan Mini Smooth. A
very feminine example but still constructed to do the job she is bred for. She
has a very pleasing head and expression, again an ample length of neck into a
well laid shoulders, again nice tight fitting elbows, lovely rounded rib cage
with a correct proportioned loin. No exaggeration on the rear whilst still well
muscled and moved well covering the ground all the time.
BEST PUPPY IN SHOW
Sunsong Shine Like A Star (AI) – Mrs S Seath wire Haired. This was the closest
class. I was splitting hairs in my decision and I believe this lady had the
added level of maturity that gave her the edge. She has the most striking head
and expression, good reach of neck into a well placed shoulder and tight elbows,
she has good prominent keel and her ribbing runs well throughout. There is a
good base for her to muscle really well and although all the puppies enjoyed
there time on the move she gave enough to show she could drive, one who I am
sure will go far

Many thanks to the committee of ECDA for inviting me to judge the miniature dachshunds at their show and for the warm welcome both me and my wife received. I was pleased to see clean and correct mouths throughout and a big improvement in tightness of elbows from the last time I judged Miniatures. Well done to the breeders!
MIN SMOOTH-HAIRED
P (1)
1.Robertson’s Marvale Cuckoo at Ravenwood, 9 month male, lovely head and expression, long neck into well placed shoulders. Good topline and rear angulation. Would like a little more drive when moving but I’m sure this will come in time. BP
J (3,1a)
1.Roberts & Smith, Winterfield Black Orchid, 16 month bitch with long neck, nice front assembly, topline ok. Would like shorter hocks but she moved well. 2.Robertson’s Ravenwood Bootylicious, shorter in neck and not the front of 1.
Y (2,1a)

1.Fowler’s Kallosphilos Aurora, Lovely compact construction giving a great outline on this 6 months bitch, good topline and rear angulation, nice head and neck running into well placed shoulders, tight elbows, moved well. BPIB, RBPIS. 2.Mugleton & Magri Rozamie Respectable, slightly longer but in balance, nice head, good shoulders, preferred the forward movement of 1. 3.Fowler’s Kallosphilos Orion. These were 3 very nice 6 month old puppies who should have a great future if they continue to develop. Very close decision.
J (2)
1.Magri’s Gilcoru Luigi Rozamie, 17 month dog, nice overall shape, good head and neck, well constructed front, solid topline and good underline, nice rear angulation used well on the move. He was a little unsettled on the move to begin but settled down the more he went, particularly in the challenge. Won BOB on maturity. 2.Parker’s Zabannah Moonlight Magic, long neck into level topline, good rear. Front feet turn out a little too much for me.
Y (1)
1.Gaut-Jones Rosenbach Christmas Star, compact bitch, good mouth, could use a little more length, rear angulation ok. A little reluctant to show herself off today.

Y (1)
1.Edwards-Everett & Everett, Emeraldax Naked Kiss, tight elbows, decent front and rear angulation. Took a while to settle on moving. Would like a longer neck.
PG (4,2a)
1.Whitnall’s Cankasper Deep River, nice head and expression, good front construction, rear angulation ok, topline held on the move. 2. Coward’s Cankasper Red Ruby, I understand this was the first show for dog and handler. It was a shame I was unable to place my hands on her so couldn’t make a proper assessment. I suggested handling classes until the dog is comfortable with being handled by strangers. Moved ok.
