At first, I would like to thank the Dachshund Club for inviting me to judge my favourite breed, the Longhaired Dachshund, at their Championship Show.
I was truly impressed by the large overall entry of about 600 Dachshunds, including 53 of my variety. Everything was perfectly organised, and I enjoyed a most interesting day.
The paperwork and ring procedures differ somewhat from those in other European countries, but thanks to the excellent assistance of my stewards I was able to fully concentrate on the dogs.
My overall impression of the dogs shown under me was very positive. Many exhibited good bodies, strong forechests and plenty of angulation, along with very sound movement. A number were shown carrying more weight than I am accustomed to, but I was pleased to see correct bites and clean, white teeth on every dog. All of them were friendly and easy to examine, although I missed a little of the characteristic temperament described in the breed standard: “Intelligent, lively, courageous to the point of rashness.”
Nevertheless, my winners displayed a happy, outgoing temperament combined with functional construction, correct size, and balanced proportions that fully support their working ability.

1ST100 - Ranglewood Xmas Cracker to Riveroyal (Mrs A Partridge)
An almost one-year-old black and tan male who immediately caught my eye. A well-stretched young dog who presents himself with style and energy, always happy and friendly. He has a beautiful head with a correct scissor bite and dark, well-shaped eyes giving a gentle expression. Long neck and sufficient forechest for his age. Well-angled both front and rear, moving with excellent drive and perfectly parallel. A sufficiently firm topline for his stage of development. Very attractive, glossy black coat with rich tan markings. Excellent tight feet and adequate bone. A most promising youngster.
2ND98 - Giovanni Rude for Kokoadax (Imp Ltu) (Miss Ap Page)
An appealing black and tan dog of excellent proportions and good size. Shows a most attractive head of quality, with a clean outline and good expression. Well-carried neck flowing smoothly into a well-constructed shoulder. Already well-developed, long ribcage with a pleasing forechest. Holds his topline on the move, although could show a little more drive from the hindquarters. Excellent bone and tight, well-knit feet. Coat of very good texture and presentation. A dog of pleasant temperament

1ST77 - Ranglewood Christmas Star (Miss E A Garlick)
A red male puppy of excellent size and already well developed for his age. Shows himself with pleasing enthusiasm and energy. Head a touch short in overall lines, though he has dark eyes, correct bite and strong jaws. Neck somewhat short, and the shoulder could be better laid back to provide a stronger topline. Excellent hind angulation and moves parallel with good drive from behind. Very good bone and well-closed feet. Coat coming on nicely.

1ST114 - Delsaux Made It Jumbo Band (Mr J M & Mr M A & Mr A Y Taylor & Hilton & Basha)
Another most promising youngster, a 16-month-old red male. Compactly built and already well developed for his age, presenting himself to best advantage. Head could be a shade more refined in type. His neck appears a little short owing to a shoulder that is not sufficiently laid back. Shows an already long, well-shaped ribcage and carries a firm topline on the move despite his youth. Very well angulated behind, giving him free, ground-covering and parallel movement. Strong bone and well-closed feet. Coat of excellent quality and well presented.

1ST103 - Kindeace London's Calling (Mr K S & Mrs S M Paskins)
An eye-catching and most handsome 14-month-old red male. He fits the breed standards ideal of a versatile hunting dog, showing himself with a proudly carried head and an excellent topline, though just a touch too pleased with his tail. Strong head with dark eyes and correct bite. Very attractive neck, well set into an excellently angled shoulder. Straight forelegs with tight, well-knit feet. Presents a good forechest and a long, well-formed ribcage. Sound hind angulation gives him good drive on the move. A little narrow when viewed both coming and going. Coat still coming through.
2ND117 - Swansford Padraciador at Gainscroft (Miss S L Vincent)
A 19-month-old black and tan male of excellent size. Not quite as eye catching as the class winner but nevertheless of high quality. Displays a pleasing head with dark eyes. Neck somewhat short due to his shoulder placement. Shows an excellent forechest and a well-developed ribcage. Straight forelegs and tight, well-knit feet. Correct topline, though a touch falling away over the croup, which affects the strength of his rear drive. Moves parallel both coming and going. Coat of beautiful quality and colour, with rich, dark tan markings. Calm and kindly temperament.

1ST102 - Kindeace Hit The Road Jack JW (Mr K S & Mrs S M Paskins)
A very handsome 2.5-year-old red male who presents himself with style, carrying his head proudly and maintaining a pleasing topline on the move. The head could be slightly more refined, but he has dark, oval eyes, a correct bite and strong jaws. Neck of adequate length flowing into a correctly angulated shoulder. Well-developed forechest, straight forelegs and compact, well-knit feet. Long, well-shaped ribcage. His well-angulated hindquarters provide good power, giving him free, ground-covering and parallel movement. Strong bone, a beautiful, shiny coat of correct amount, and a very pleasant temperament.
2ND116 - Gainscroft Dark Destroyer (Miss S L Vincent)
An appealing male of excellent size and correct proportions. Shows a most attractive head and expression, with dark, almond-shaped eyes. Would benefit from a slightly better laid-back shoulder. Straight, well-made forelegs with correctly closed feet. Good forechest and ribbing, and well-constructed hindquarters. Croup a little short and carries his tail somewhat high. Moves with good energy and a long, reaching stride, though he can at times become a little soft in his topline. Coat of lovely quality and beautifully presented.

1ST74 - Sundayshill Theodore at Borzdac (Mrs J Fricker)
A masculine dog of high quality. Presents a most handsome head with correct bite and strong jaws. Well constructed with correct proportions, which would be even more impressive if carrying a little less weight. Well-angled forehand with straight forelegs and tight, well-closed feet. Long, well-extended ribcage and an excellent topline both standing and moving. His well-constructed hindquarters provide strong rear drive. Calm and kindly temperament, and a coat of very good quality
2ND80 - Ch Abydachs Return of The Night (Miss E H Geeson)
A most handsome male who combines the elegance expected in the breed with the strong construction required of a dog bred for work. Shows a noble, refined head with dark, almond-shaped eyes. Long neck flowing into a well-placed shoulder. Unfortunately, feet somewhat flat and open, with rather weak pasterns. Excellent topline and well-carried tail. Well-angled hindquarters giving him an impressive stride and strong rear propulsion. Coat long, glossy and of correct quantity, with a beautiful deep red colour. Shown to best advantage.

1ST101 - Cedavoch It's Taboo at Kindeace VW (Mr K S & Mrs S M Paskins)
An 8-year-old male in excellent condition. Very well constructed, showing a good forechest and well-balanced angulation, which together produce most pleasing movement both in profile and when viewed coming and going. Would prefer a slightly longer head and stronger jaw. Still carries a beautiful, glossy coat.
2ND78 - Ranglewood Harvest Song (Miss E A Garlick)
A nine-year-old black and tan veteran whose overall impression is somewhat affected by a coat that no longer lies as close as desired. Head a touch small, yet with a pleasing expression, correct bite and excellent clean teeth. Well-angled forehand with a long, well-shaped ribcage and sufficient ground clearance. Good hind angulation and moves well in profile, though a little narrow behind. Pleasant temperament.

1ST99 - Pettigans Viva La Vida by Riveroyal JW (Mrs A Partridge)
A most stylish and eye-catching feminine bitch. She presents a thoroughly appealing silhouette and quite wonderful side movement. Shows a beautiful head with long, clean lines, excellent expression and correct bite. Long, well-carried neck flowing into a well-placed shoulder. Straight, well-made forelegs and tight feet. Well-developed ribcage with a long sternum. Hindquarters correctly angulated with good length of second thigh, though not entirely parallel when viewed from behind. Still somewhat short of coat, but what she has is of good quality. A happy, friendly and inquisitive young lady.
2ND118 - Delsaux Twenty Carat Golden for Kendalldax (Miss S W West)
Another attractive young bitch, 16 months old. Shows pleasing long lines in the head with dark, almond-shaped eyes. Good length of neck, though the shoulder could be better laid back. Correct forechest and ribcage. Well-angled hindquarters giving good drive, but she is narrow when viewed from behind. Coat of very good quality and well presented.

1ST109 - Ranglewood Noelle (Miss E Richardson)
A very promising young bitch of high quality, feminine yet with the correct substance. Beautiful head with pleasing proportions, though she could benefit from a slightly stronger underjaw for full balance. Of good size and showing harmonious overall lines. Very well constructed for her age with a developing forechest, firm topline and adequate bone. Moves parallel both coming and going, with a surprisingly long and free stride for a puppy. Coat is glossy and well presented, with warm, clearly defined tan markings giving a most appealing overall impression. A youngster with a bright future ahead
2ND83 - Abydachs Out of The Fire (ai) (Mrs J F Geeson)
An utterly delightful bitch with an exquisite head and dark, almond-shaped eyes. Feminine throughout with correct angulation, a well-developed forechest and a well-shaped ribcage. Ideal in size and substance. Coat of beautiful texture and colour, very well presented. Unfortunately, she does not wish to show herself to advantage today, which detracts slightly from her overall impression.
35. Dachshund (Long-Haired) - Junior Bitch
Entries: 3 Absentees: 2
1ST76 - Ranglewood Andromeda (Miss E A Garlick)
A very beautiful 17-month-old red bitch presenting an excellent overall impression. She has a well-proportioned, elongated head with lovely dark eyes and a well-developed jaw. Neck of good length. Straight forelegs and a long upper arm, though she would benefit from a better-laid shoulder, which currently causes her topline to soften slightly on the move. Otherwise very well angulated, and she moves with a long, ground-covering stride and good drive from behind. Beautiful coat and colour, and a delightful temperament
36. Dachshund (Long-Haired) - Novice Bitch
Entries: 3 Absentees: 2
1ST89 - Pettigans Va Va Voom (Mrs S Legg)
A black and tan bitch just over two years of age, displaying long, elegant lines throughout. Long, refined head which would benefit from a stronger underjaw for perfect balance. Long neck leading into a well-placed shoulder. Correct front and a sufficiently long ribcage. Well-angulated hindquarters and she moves with a long, reaching stride, though unfortunately she is uncomfortable in the situation today and does not carry herself freely. Beautiful coat and well-presented.

1ST104 - Kindeace You Wear It Well (Mr K S & Mrs S M Paskins)
A very substantial red bitch with plenty of body, though she could show a touch more elegance in outline. Good head with correct bite. Neck a little on the short side but well set on. Excellent forechest and a well-developed ribcage. Straight forelegs with tight, well-knit feet. Good hind angulation and she moves energetically and parallel, showing strength and purpose. Strong bone, good coat and a delightful temperament with plenty of self-confidence.
2ND67 - Swansford Gingerdora by Labbadax (Miss J M Dimon)
A very elegant, long-lined black bitch, approaching seven years of age. She has a noble and most beautiful head with dark eyes; her tan markings could be a little more clearly defined. Long neck, though her shoulder placement is somewhat forward. Slightly soft in pasterns. Ribcage of adequate length and an excellent, well-angulated hindquarter which gives her free, ground-covering movement with good drive. Moves parallel both coming and going. Coat of good quality.

1ST110 - Swansford Debhoradora (Mr D Roberts)
Another very beautiful red bitch, just over two years old, with harmonious proportions throughout. She has a most attractive head with dark, almond-shaped eyes and correct ear placement. Long neck flowing into a well-laid shoulder. Excellent forechest and a well-developed ribcage. Stands and moves with an excellent topline. Parallel on the move with superb drive from behind. Good bone and tight, well-knit feet. Beautiful dark red, glossy coat. Shown to perfection
2ND75 - Kyrenia Queens Request with Ranglewood (Miss E A Garlick)
A substantial red bitch, shown today carrying a little too much weight, which slightly affects her outline and makes the head appear a touch small in proportion to the body. Very well constructed with a good front and forechest, a well-developed ribcage and sound angulation throughout. Moves parallel with good reach and maintains her topline both standing and on the move. Attractive coat and a calm, friendly temperament

1ST84 - Ch Cavallibrook Final Fling Bronia (Mrs F Hanney-Mitchell)
An almost four-year-old red bitch of very high quality, coming remarkably close to the breed standard. Presented herself beautifully throughout the day, displaying her happy and outgoing temperament. Noble, feminine head with a most pleasing expression and dark, almond-shaped eyes. Excellent overall proportions with well-balanced angulation, giving a harmonious outline. Moves with excellent reach and drive, perfectly parallel and with good control. Strong bone and first-class feet. A truly impressive bitch of the finest quality.
2ND79 - Ch Abydachs Fire in Her Soul (Miss E H Geeson)
An eye-catching and beautifully representative six-year-old red bitch. She has an exquisite head with a delightful expression and dark, almond-shaped eyes. Correct bite and strong jaw. A long, elegant neck flows into a well-made shoulder assembly and continues into a correct topline, maintained both standing and on the move. Shown to perfection and moves with energy and joy. The right amount of beautiful red coat of excellent quality completes the overall picture. She has slightly flat feet and somewhat soft pasterns, but remains a most impressive exhibit.

An almost nine-year-old red veteran bitch, remarkably well preserved and in excellent condition. Her head shows excellent lines with strong jaws and a correct bite. I would prefer slightly smaller, more almond-shaped eyes. She presents herself with confident energy. Throughout, she is well constructed with excellent proportions. Moves with a proudly carried head, a beautiful neck of correct set-on, and a first-class shoulder placement. The correct topline and well-carried tail complete the impression of a Dachshund very close to the breed standard.
