SMOOTH HAIRED

I very much enjoyed my day at the Club’s 125th Anniversary Show, judging the Smooth Haired Dachshunds. Overall temperaments were sound only the occasional one a little apprehensive which was understandable in the echoing hall. Toenails needed attention in a lot of exhibits and teeth could have been cleaner on two or three exhibits. My overall impression is that the breed is in good hands and the main areas where improvement is needed are feet and in some cases size. MPD (1) 1 Walkley’s Churchoak Cardinalsin. Handsome Choc/tan dog. Good head & eye. Prominent forechest. Correct angulation fore & aft. Moved soundly Keeping a good outline. Well deserved his red card. PD (8) 1 McNaughton’s Cedavoch Galadrim, CC, BP and BPIS. Super B/T boy. Loved him from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail. Correct size and construction. Fantastic profile on the move with plenty of reach and drive. He powered around the ring saying ‘look at me’ and I did. 2 Eales Lauralee The X Factor. Another very nice B/T of great elegance. Very well constructed. Couldn’t quite match the back end of winner. 3rd Joy’s Rosenket Hot Property with Morailsa. JD (4) 1 Hot Property with M. 3rd in last class. I liked this choc/tan puppy very much. He had a nice head & eye, well made body of good length and nice hammy hindquarters. 2 Hunt’s Carpaccio Black Sabbath. Nice size B/T dog. Good head & eye. Elegant neck. Sound mover. I would like a slightly longer upper arm and also a bit more length of body which is why I preferred the outline of the winner on the move. 3 Hinwood’s Longmel Special Delivery [NAF]. PGD (4) 1 Punter’s Welcumen Kiss Me Quick. Very well balanced dog of correct size. Soundly constructed. Moved well. 2 Hedges’ Silandajo The Only One. Another B/T who looked better on the move when he kept a very good outline. He tended to stand pushing through his front which made him seem rather to heavy in front. 3 Marsh’s Marshwick Merrison. LD (6,2a) 1 Marsh’s Marshwick Moonlight Shadow. Good headed B/T dog. Elegant neck. Good length of body with well rounded rump. Moved soundly keeping a super profile. 2nd Eales & Tite’s Lauralee Role Of Honour via Rijobeau. Red dog. Very good head. Prominent forechest. Good length of body with rounded quarters. Moved soundly. Close decision. 3rd Stanton’s Hampdach Hot Topic. OD (5) Lovely class of top class dogs. 1st Armstrong’s Lauralee Lloyd George. Res CC. B/T dog. Super outline on the move. Masculine head on strong neck. Slightly overdone in forechest when standing. Feet could be tighter. Very sound both ways. 2nd McNaughton’s Ch /Aus. Ch Nicholyev The Hobbit [imp] Very well balanced red dog. Sire of my BOB winner. Good head & neck. Well ribbed body. Good angulation both ends. Tight feet. Just preferred the length and steadier hind movement of winner. 3rd Cooper’s  Ch Sontag Simon Le Bone. Completed a trio of outstanding boys any of which I would have been happy to award a CC but the puppy stole my heart. VD (5) 1 No details in catalogue. Red dog of excellent conformation. Lovely head & eye on elegant neck. Good length of ribbing. Well angulated hindquarters. Looked super standing. Moved soundly but seemed a little reluctant. 2 Hunt’s Ch Carpaccio Diamond Eclipse. 7 years B/T bitch. Super profile on the move. Feet could be better and she moved slightly wide in front and close behind which influenced my decision. 3 Hosegood’s Lauralee Welsh Guard at Hydax. MPB (3) 1 Bethel’s Hampdach Dulcina. 8 months red bitch. Excellent size. Lovely head & eye. Good reach of neck Prominent forechest. Correct angulation fore and aft. Good length of body. Moved soundly. Just needs to develop a bit more width all through which I am sure will come with maturity. 2 Vosper’s Oggylands Choughed To Bits. Nice headed B/T. Moved soundly on good legs and feet keeping a very nice outline. 3 Stanton’s Hampdach Claudia. PB (6,1a) 1 No details in catalogue. Stunning Red Bitch. Super head & eye. Well arched neck into correct shoulders and length of upper arm. Well ribbed body and nicely rounded quarters. Moved so soundly keeping an excellent topline. BPB and she was close up in my consideration for the challenge. 2 Turners Marictur Uptown Madam. Another class where I would have loved more than one red card. This B/T is so well balanced with lovely bone. She excels in breed type from her elegant head & neck to her lovely rounded quarters. Moved soundly with style keeping a super outline. 3 Melbourne’s Lauralee Take That To Melriding. JB (4) 1 Lovick-Gibbs’ Roleta Remember When. Small, neat B/T bitch. Not an immediate eyecatcher but so correctly made. She moved soundly on lovely feet keeping her topline at all times. 2 Eales & Tite’s Rijobeau Ready To Rumble. B/T of excellent type. Good head. Super length of body. Moved soundly but was a little apprehensive. 3 Hedges’ Roleta Playing Up To Silandajo. PGB (5,1a) Difficult to decide between 1st and 2nd as they were of different types 1st No details in catalogue. This Red bitch was so elegant and moved with such enthusiasm keeping a textbook topline. Her movement was so precise. However, she had a very milky underline and could have carried more weight to advantage. 2 Rawson’s Churchoak Chit Chat With Rosenket. This B/t bitch carried far to much weight which detracted from her many virtues. She is of a lovely type. Good head, ideal size. Nicely angulated both ends. Very good feet on which she moved soundly. 3 Hinwood’s Longmel Double Truffle. LB (10,3a) 1 CC & BOB McNaughton’s Cedavoch Aarwen. Most beautiful red bitch. Excellent proportions of length to height. Fantastic driving movement keeping an outstanding profile. Delighted to hear this CC gave her her title. Very well deserved. 2 Armstrong’s Lauralee Single Girl. I have always loved the type this kennel brings out and my one criticism today was that they all seemed a bit over exaggerated in front when standing. All of them pulled themselves together to look super on the move and as I am a movement judge and not a standing judge this is where they scored. This bitch was of very good type. She moved soundly and kept a very good profile at all times. 3 Lovick-Gibbs’ Roleta The Name Of The Game. OB (7,1a) 1 & Res CC. Norton’s Matzel Melua. Gorgeous B/T bitch. So well balanced. Lovely head, eye & neck. Well constructed body. Clean legs and tight feet. Moved soundly and kept a copybook outline at all times. Very hard decision between her and Aarwen as they are of such different types but in the end Aarwen’s enthusiastic, driving movement just carried the day. Two bitches I would be proud to own. 2 Turner’s Marictur Miss Midnight. What can I say except another really well constructed bitch who was unlucky that she met the other two on such top form. I slightly preferred the head of Melua but this is another bitch who well deserves the title of Champion and on another day I would have no problem in awarding her a CC. 3 Armstrong’s Lauralee Under Milk Wood. My grateful thanks to the smooth exhibitors for giving me such a quality entry.
