SMOOTH HAIRED

It is a few years since I last judged the breed and I was quite impressed with the improvement in the breed. My concerns involved what used to be referred to as cheekiness which was accompanied by loose skin on the head and neck on some of the reds. I have always considered front construction an important priority but without a strong well-muscled hindquarters giving drive you can not have the required free flowing movement and long stride. The majority of feet were good except for a puppy whose nails were so long two of them were crossed over. I thought temperament overall was much improved with the exception of two puppies who I felt lacked confidence.

PD (5) 1 Higgins’s Leveliss This Charming Man. Black and tan. Only a baby but a very promising one. Difficult to criticize: Super head. Excellent front construction: Particularly layback of shoulder. I hope with experience he will gain confidence. Best Puppy Dog. 2 Jones’s Adnerbs Smooth Criminal. Beautifully shaped, red, masculine hound, unlucky to meet winner. 3 Jeffrey’s Carpaccio Summer Class.

JD (1) 1 Lovick-Gibbs’s Tealby Pride N Prejudice Now Roleta. Black and tan. Pleasing outline and construction. Needs a bit more sparkle but not much I would like different.

PGD (3) 1 Burke & Manston’s Bonavior Materdor. Red, good outline. Very sound, free, movement. Scored on front angulation. 2 Marsh’s Marswick Blackberry. Black and tan. Another pleasing outline not as positive in movement as winner. 3 Higgin’s Leveliss Long Lankin.

LD (3) 1 Ellis’s Another Rumour In Red. Shaded red. Low to ground despite highset hocks. Soundest, free movement. Frowned a bit.  Scored on tail set and carriage. 2 Macdonald’s Carpaccio Black Out At Bensarka. Black and tan. Pleasing head and eye. Would have liked stronger hindquarters. 3 Starkey’s Carpaccio Top Of The Class At Hamoura.

OD (4,1) 1 Hunt’s Lauralee Living Daylights At Carpaccio. Black and tan. well-handled – in excellent coat and condition. Pleasing head and eye on well-laid shoulders. Short strong loin enabling him to move correctly with firm topline. Gave 100% in the final challenge and I was pleased to see him shortlisted in the group. CC & BOB. 2 McNaughton’s Cedavoch Honour Bound. Black and tan. Well- constructed, pleasing outline. Sound, free mover who moved even better in challenge for Res. CC. Res CC. 3 Dalgety’s Thundergay Archduke.

PB (3) A trio of very promising youngsters. 1 Higgin’s Leveliss What She Said. Black and tan. Pleasing head and eye Long, clean neck on well-laid shoulders. Scored on style. Moved with confidence and drive. Best Puppy. 2 Hickie’s Roleta When To Shine For Pickardach. Another promising, feminine black and tan. Excellent construction and angulation at both ends. 3 Williams’s Rijobeau Innit Tu Winnit By Cwmdarhian.

PGB
(5) 1 Ellis’s Tealby Tittle Tattle. Black and tan. A bit light in quarters but scored on neck and drive in movement. 2 Dalgety’s Thundergay My Fair Lady. Sweet, feminine black and tan. Good bone. Ultra sound. Excellent angulation and width in movement. 3 Punter’s Abbagirls Here I Am At Welcumen.

LB (8,1) 1 Norton’s Matzell Mildred. The one the judge would most like to take home. Red, classical, feminine head. Long, clean, muscular neck on well laid shoulders. Correct length of upper arm. Terrific drive and free movement. In excellent coat and condition. CC. Unfortunately did not give her best in the final challenge. 2 Dalgety’s Thundergay Magdalena. An excellent, black and tan. A good honest bitch. I liked everything about her. She was just unlucky to meet the winner. 3 Cooper’s Lauralee Coco Pops To Sontag.

OB (5,1) 1 McNaughton’s Cedavoch I Love To Boogie. A difficult decision. Red in excellent coat and condition. Scored in strength of movement and set of hock. Res. CC. 2 Norton’s Ch Matzell Maid Of Honour. Another pleasing, feminine, red bitch. Good profile, excellent angulation. Moved soundly with drive. 3 Macdonald’s Ch Hampdach Classic Gold At Bensarka.
