I am grateful to the committee for giving me this opportunity to judge at a general championship show, albeit non-CC classes. It was no sinecure, six hours in the ring in hot, sunny and windy conditions, with one short comfort break! I was pleased with the entry, especially the two miniature breeds with as many exhibits as in some CC classes and I was very happy to have a very helpful and experienced steward in Karen Rimmer: thank you, Karen! The grass was a little long for some of the miniature exhibits. I am constantly amazed at the number of dogs with tartar and those with totally clean teeth were very much in the minority. No scales for the non-CC miniature breeds, sadly.

Smooth-Haired Dachshunds

Limited entry so difficult to draw too many conclusions but the breed does seem a little on the heavy side and I wonder how many could do a real day’s work. Heads and teeth are good, shoulders and length of ribbing not always so

JD: (1,0) 1. Jennings’ Marvale’s Manifesto at Jenivon, well developed 11 month old B&T, masculine head, good eye, strong front, clearance on the limit, good shoulders and level topline, good hindquarters with no exaggeration, moved well, not terribly parallel but will hopefully strengthen and improve BPD BJ BD & BP

YD: (1,0) Coupland’s Retrohound Hermes, 13 month old who sadly had to withdraw having gone lame

JB: (3,1) 1. Tomlinson’s Melisdax Memories of May, 13 month old B&T, pleasing outlines, good ratio, feminine head, good eye, strong prosternum, sufficient clearance, decent length of neck, moved out well 2. Balfour’s Clentry Mango Passion, 16 month old red, well covered, good head and eye, level topline, a little short in upper arm and ribbing, and movement not that of class winner

YB: (1,0) 1. Tomlinson’s Melisdax Magnolia in May, 13 month old red, pleasing head and expression, good eye, decent neck flowing into level topline with good shoulders, perhaps a little short in ribbing, moved out well RBB
