I would like to start by thanking the Dachshund Club for inviting me to judge at their Championship Show. It is an honour to be asked to judge at the Premier Dachshund Show, so thank you very much for the accolade. I would like to thank my two stewards for organising my ring so efficiently and for their wonderful sense of humour throughout the day. Before I start my critique of the dogs I judged, I would like to make some overall observations on the breed but would like to start with remarks about something that I think is a dangerous trend in both the Dog showing world and elsewhere. This week, I have received several requests from exhibitors to befriend them on Facebook, exhibitors who clearly own and show Wirehaired Dachshunds, and who came under me yesterday. This is unacceptable. I am judging your dogs, I do not wish to be friends with you. If you think that being your friend on Facebook will sway my judgement, then you are wrong. I do not care who is at the end of the lead, I am attempting to reward those dogs that fit the breed standard most closely not those who belong to friends. As my friends in the dog world will tell you, when I have judged them, I have been honest in my opinion and put friends down the line and non-friends in high places because their dogs deserved it. If I get this when I judge again, I will have no hesitation but to report this to the RKC.
Now to the breed that I judged yesterday. Why do exhibitors feel the need to bait their dogs all the time? It was very noticeable that the top exhibitors did not do this but had their dogs trained to stand correctly on the table for me to go over. In many cases, my job was made difficult because the dog I was judging was wriggling around trying to get the bait in the handler’s hand. By all means have treats and rewards when your dog has completed their show before the judge but please not while it is on the table and the judge is trying to assess it.
Please be mindful of size when breeding. I found several dogs to be over the ideal size, both in length and height. In many of the exhibits, I found a lack of forechest. Please read your breed standard when choosing a dog to show. I was disappointed in the presentation of several dogs. Yes, I am judging for construction and movement but having a well-trimmed dog, with well-manicured feet and nails are all part of the picture. Finally, it was evident that many exhibits lacked muscle-tone, a clear lack of good exercise. This was not the case in my winning exhibits so please take note as your animals will benefit from that daily walk, both physically and mentally.
Overall, apart from the above, there was a lot of quality in the breed and if you wonder why some people are at the top of the tree, winning on a regular basis, then spend time looking at the construction and movement of their dogs, how they are turned out and how they are handled in the ring. If you plan to breed then take time to choose the right dog for your bitch.
Special Beginners Dog (4/1)
1ST Dollydash Defender of Faith (Mrs Sa & Mr Lj Farrington) 3yr. This dog took my eye as he entered the ring. He possesses a good head with correct eye shape, ear placement and bite. His shoulders are nicely laid back with correct front and rear angulation. This allowed him to show drive in his movement around the ring coupled with balance as he stood. At all times on the move, he maintained a level topline. Pleased to award him BSB.
2ND Salixian Moroccan Mint (Mr M & Mrs C D Horne) 6yr. Another of good head shape and construction. Showed sound drive around the ring but just lacking the excellent drive of my winner today. Level topline at all times.
Minor Puppy Dog (1/0)
1ST Blue Bayou (Mrs P Rodwell). 8mths. A very joyful person to go over but still very raw. As discussed with his handler, he has a lot of growing to do but already possesses a sound construction and moved with purpose. A little long over the loin and croupe high at the moment. BPD
Puppy Dog (2/1)
1ST Blue Bayou (Mrs P Rodwell). See Above
Junior Dog (3/0)
1ST Tendrow Down to The Wire at Bramdach (Mrs C Akehurst). 18mth. Another who took my eye as they came into the ring, and did not disappoint. This young man is quality from his classic head, eye shape and ear placement through his front construction, ribbing and rear angulation. All of which allowed him to show great drive around the ring, maintaining a level top line and straight movement, and a clear set of pads as he went away. He thoroughly deserved his RCC, and I hope he goes on to take his title.
2ND Atahira Finale (Mrs C Davies). 15mth. A red dog of great substance. Lovely head and front construction but would like a little more forechest. Good angles front and rear, allowing him to move well while keeping his topline level.
Novice Dog (3/2)
1ST Teckelgarth Love Bug (Mrs M M Mountford).2 1/2yr. Red dog with a great head, good ribbing and loin length. Good rear angles with straight movement and a level topline at all times.
Post Graduate Dog (4/1)
1ST Tendrow Down to The Wire at Bramdach (Mrs C Akehurst). See above
2ND Serengarth Bear with Me JW (Mrs L Adams). 22mths. A red dog of very sound construction. Great head, eye shape and ear placement. Well laid-back shoulders and good length of ribbing. Could do with more forechest but a level topline at all times with sound drive.
Limit Dog(13/2)
1ST Covellyn’s Cecil at Silvae (Imp Che) (Mr D C & Mrs K D Mccalmont) 20mths. A great stamp of a dog. Classic head set on a good reach of neck with well laid-back shoulders. Excellent front and rear angles, correct ribbing and loin length. He moved with purpose, maintaining his level topline at all times. In the challenge the movement of the junior dog just pipped him to that award but his day will come, I am sure.
2ND Collidach Russell Leeves (Ms J Russell).3 1/2yrs.Red dog. Much of the above applies to this dog but, today, the movement of the winner just shaded it for me. A great example of the breed showing that there is quality in the breed.
Open Dog (9/2)
1ST Silvae Bystander (Mr D C & Mrs K D Mccalmont). 16mth. The pleasure of judging a breed is made all the greater when you are able to go over a dog of this quality. There was nothing I could fault here and it was a joy to feel everything so perfectly in place and to watch the great movement as he flowed round the ring. I had no hesitation in awarding him the DCC. This was made all the more pleasurable when told that I had made him up. With quality like this, you have a template to copy in your breeding.
2ND Ch Boloria Goodnight Mr Tom JW (Miss R Rowe).2yr. Another great example of the breed. Good head on a sound neck length into well laid-back shoulders. Good length of ribbing and maintaining a level topline at all times. Straight in his movement, both coming and going.
Baby Puppy Bitch (2/1)
1ST Bulldaxit Like A Dream (Mr G & Mrs J Cox). 4 1/2mth. A lovely outgoing personality. Of sound construction showing correct movement, even at this young age. Maintained a level topline on the move as well as straight movement. BBP
Special Beginners Bitch (8/1)
1ST Derdledash Skyfall at Dakotadax JW (Miss A Dickinson) 23mth. Great head with correct eye shape, ear placement and bite. Excellent front angles with tight elbows into good ribbing and loin length. Correct rear angles allowed good drive around the ring while holding a level topline and straight movement.
2ND Carcorn Chrissy's Girl (Mr N & Mrs C Corner).17mths. A smaller sized bitch but well proportioned and soundly put together. Correct head and front construction allowed her to keep that level topline on the move. Just not driving as well as the winner today.
Minor Puppy Bitch (3/0)
1ST Sweetihoundz Ae Fond Kiss (Mrs A Mackenzie). 7mth. What a gorgeous puppy? All in the correct proportion. Lovely feminine head with spot on eyes, ear placement and skull structure. Angles, front and rear, all well established and maintained her level topline as she moved. I am sure she will have a bright future.
2ND Sunsong Shine Like A Star (ai) (Mrs S Seath). 8 1/2mth. Another good example of the breed with much of the above comments apply here. Good head, angulation and drive on the move. Not quite as forward moving as the winner today.
Puppy Bitch (7/3)
1ST Stanegate Sonja (H M & C Pughe & Fraser). 8mth. Another very sound puppy to go over. Good head structure on an elegant neck with well laid-back shoulders. Excellent front and rear angulation allowing her to maintain her level topline and show good drive while moving. Nice and straight in that movement.
2ND Sweetihoundz Wee Sleekit (Mrs A Mackenzie) 7mth. Litter sister to the minor puppy winner and lots to like here. Good head structure with correct eye and ear placement. Correct angles front and rear allowing her to move as I was looking for. Like her sister, I am sure she will have a successful career but just out moved in this class today.
Junior Bitch (4/1)
1ST Tannahill Day by Day (Miss A Binks). 14mth. A super compact bitch. Again, an excellent head set on a good neck length into well laid-back shoulders. Spot on front and rear construction that allowed her to flow round the ring showing good drive and a level topline as she did so.
2ND Hopewood Dream Come True (Miss Eliza Sirrell). 14mth. Seen in Special Beginners. Good angles front and rear but not enough forechest for me. Sound ribbing but lacking real drive around the ring today.
Novice Bitch (9/2)
1ST Hazelglade Harriet (Mrs K Buxton). 21mth. Head and front construction were pleasing with tight elbows and sound ribbing. Good rear angles allowed for excellent driving movement, keeping a level topline throughout her moving round the ring.
2ND Lallybrook Royale Legacy (Mrs Y Waller). 2yr.Really surprised me after my initial look. Once I got my hands on her she proved to have a super head and construction then moved with the level topline I was looking for. Just came down to the slightly better drive of the winner today.
Post Graduate Bitch (8/2)
1ST Drakkina Wirenth (Ms J V Hunt). 3yr. Chocolate bitch of a great stamp. Good head with almond eye shape and correct ear placement. Head set on a good neck length into well laid-back shoulders. Good angles front and rear, good forechest and length of ribbing. Maintained an excellent topline on the move.
2ND Incordemeo Remember Me (Mrs M M Mountford). 18mth. I could say all of the above about this bitch. Today she just lacked that extra bit of drive that the winner showed but a class act and places could be reversed at any time.
Limit Bitch (13/3)
1ST Silvae Hallmark (Mr D C & Mrs K D Mccalmont) 2 1/2yr. Another excellent example of the breed from this kennel. There was little to fault here. Super head, excellent angles in front and rear construction. Stood with a natural balance that indicates sound construction. Moved smoothly with drive and levelness I was looking for. Considered her for the RCC.
2ND Boloria Wild and Naughty (Mrs T Lucas). 3 ½. Much of what I say about my class winner applies to this placing. This is another line that is producing sound breed type examples. Today, it was that slightly stronger movement that decided this placing but I am sure she will receive top awards in the near future.
Open Bitch (6/0)
1ST Silvae Fan The Flames (Mr D C & Mrs K D Mccalmont). 16mth. Litter sister to the DCC winner and as good in everyway. As I said about him, it is such a pleasure to go over such quality examples of the breed. Here is a template for others to aim for. I had no hesitation in awarding her the BCC. In the challenge, she edged out her brother on movement in that moment. BOB
2ND Ch Boloria Oh Darling JW (Misses R & R Howlett & Rowe) 21mths and already a champion. It is easy to see why. I could find only quality here and I was torn as to who would receive the win. In the end it was that final move together that swayed me. Another day, the placings could be reversed but she could not be denied RBCC
Veteran Bitch (2/0)
1ST Ch Boloria's Trick or Treat JW VW (Miss R Rowe). 9yr. Still showing such quality at 9yrs old. Good dentition for her age. Sound and level in topline with tight elbows and good angles of construction allowing her to move freely. A credit to her owners. BV
2ND Cairparavel Kiss from A Rose JW (Mrs S J Clayton-Smith). 7 1/2yr. Have judged her before and still as good. Sound in every way with correct angles front and rear. When she moved, it was with a level topline and straightness but was reluctant to cooperate fully.
