It was a lovely gesture to be asked to judge Best in Show at Midland Dachshund Club’s 80th anniversary celebration show, and I thank the officers and committee.
It is always interesting to be presented with the six representatives from all the varieties, all winning CC’s on the day, to make a final selection from and so with a focus very much on the best on the day, not judging till extremely late in the day, after two shows, may have affected the performance of some. It was certainly full of top winning exhibits.
Best In Show - Ch. Abydachs Return of the Night (Miss E Geeson) Beautifully presented shaded red Std Long male of great presence & in lovely coat. Strong correct front assembly with a good length of neck used to advantage on the move. Good tight feet good spring and the best length of ribbing of those competing. Well angulated muscled hindquarters, holding a strong level topline at all times and by far the best mover on the day showing excellent reach and drive. The handler certainly gets the most out of him and it was lovely to see a dog holding a beautiful outline and moving with purpose, shown on a loose lead. With such a ‘look at me’ performance, combined with good sound construction, I was delighted to award him BIS.
Reserve Best In Show - Ch. Dandydayo Kiss The Girl (Mr A Whitfield-Roberts) Very feminine red Miniature Long female of super type and of correct size. Elegant head and dark eye with a delightful expression, correct oval front with tight elbows and a good lay of shoulder. Another that had a lovely naturally flowing topline held at all times and well angulated hindquarters. Well presented and handled, showing good drive behind and matching reach in front. She was just pipped on the use and length of neck and natural flowing positive movement of the ultimate winner, however on a different day the decision could have been different. Delighted to award her RBIS.
I was delighted with the quality, style and promise of the six puppies presented before me for BPIS and would not have had an issue awarding several of them the top accolade, two that unfortunately did not feature but must be mentioned being the mini wire & mini long both top drawer and ones that undoubtedly have a highly successful career ahead. I wish them both every success for the future.
Best Puppy In Show - Darsoms Zyrhona (Mrs C Dare) Simply stunning red std long female of 10 months. What a beautiful outline this young girl presents. Of a great size with so much feminine charm and elegance. Great conical head, well set ears and good strong jaw, darkest of eyes. Lovely length of neck into super flowing, well laid shoulders. Nice, neat feet lovely substance and bone without any signs of coarseness. The best of correctly flowing toplines and super soundly angulated and strong parallel hindquarters. Moved with grace and flair showing good reach and drive. Still very much a baby but one that without doubt will mature into a stunner. It gave me immense pleasure to award her Best Puppy In Show.
Reserve Best Puppy In Show - Bronia Daimmen (Mrs F Hanney-Mitchell) Classy 9 month B/T mini smooth male of great size and full of ring presence. Strong overall construction. Correct front, tight elbows, nice tight feet, good length of neck used on the move. Has a super outline on the stand, moves correctly for and aft. Very smart little dog that should continue to do well as he matures. Carries himself very well on the move. Will watch his progress with interest.
Some superb exhibits sent through for the Veteran competition, again several not making the top two places but that were unlucky to meet such fierce competition include the standard long & the standard wire and on a different day, results could have been different as these exhibits had to wait until well after 6pm to compete.
Best Veteran in Show - Ch. Wildstar Wrobinson JW (Mr R Wood) – Stunning red mini long male of 8 years. I was wowed by this boy when awarding him CC & BOB early in his campaign. At the time I said he would go down in history, and he certainly has – now the outright breed record holder and well deserved – a correctly sized ultra well-constructed showman. Even in his later years he retains his quality and soundness and moves with style and elegance. So well put together – I’m sure there are many winning offspring. Thrilled to be able to award him Best Veteran in Show.
Reserve Best Veteran in Show - Ch. Helydon Laird Loki JW (Kirkwood-Emery, Mrs D & Misses A & A) – Very stylish mini wire male of 7 years. Looking super fit and moving like a dream. Lovely correct coat and a good size – I think he is looking as well now as he ever has. Good strong front masculine head, correct eye, and ear set. Strong jaw and powerful set of teeth. Nicely laid shoulders into a great ribcage and short loin – great chunky muscular hindquarters used with purpose. Lovely to watch on the move using his strong back end to propel him forward, good reach too. Over some top quality exhibits I was delighted to award him RBVIS.
