Crufts 2003

Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired)
In males the difficulty was to find an exhibit that combined type, correct construction, sound movement and outgoing temperament. It was a much easier task in the females, with many who combined all I was looking for.
SpPD (5) 1 Freer’s Switherland Altarico. S/r who did fulfil my expectations for type and construction, with super hindquarters, level topline, lovely head. Would not fully co-operate with his handler. 2 Marka-Novaj’s Shembys Spitfire. Another good type who used his well constructed hindquarters to advantage, rather narrow in front at present. 3 Plant’s Merehill Newz Encounter. Classic outline posed, which he lost on the move. Same correct hindquarters as above and also narrow in front.
SpJD (7) 1 McAlister’s Lockfyne Rakino. S/R of lovely type, another who used his well constructed hindquarters to advantage. Is in between puppy and adult - will watch him mature with interest. 2 Stokes’ Webbers Paddy. B/T. Good layback of shoulder, as a consequence his front movement was very true. Level topline. 3 Shutt’s Donnadoon Princes Passion. B/T. Lovely bone and feet.
SpYD (6) 1 Punter’s Welcumen Whiskey. B/T. Very smart youngster with a lovely outline both posed and on the move. As yet narrow all through, but I believe that will come with maturity. Res CC. 2 Reeds’ Deercroft Aramis to Batenbach. B/T. Different type to the winner and shorter in upperarm. Level topline. 3 Yeoman’s Klyberbyner Noblesse Oblige. Rather rangy as yet with a very clean outline, good feet.
PGD (6) 1 Luke’s Corriknowe Circassian. B/T. Another with good bone and feet. Substantial. Did not co-operate fully with his handler. 2 Bassant’s Shardagang Johnnie Walker at Crancott. S/R. Rather rangey type, would like to see more covering. 3 Yeoman’s Klyberbyner Noblesse Oblige.
LD (10) 1 Sharkey’s Nordach Oberon at Hyshope. Red. Smart and sound, well constucted and well covered exhibit who appeared to enjoy his day - and it showed! CC. 2 Lashbrook’s Milfer Jack the Lad. Another red. Really strong hindquarters, which he used to advantage, another who enjoyed his day and co-operated with his handler. A little short in upperarm. 3 Orton and Mathews’ Scalamor Willow the Wisp. B/T. Well hald outline both posed and on the move. Well handled.
OD (7) 1 Punter’s Ch Clipperdown Loganberry Welcumen. S/R. I gave him the CC last time I judged him and I still like him. On the day he gave way to youth. 2 Mendes’ Ch Sharmein Rajah. Great bone and feet and also a very happy temperament. Rather low to ground. 3 Orton’s Scalaor Dudly Nightshade. B/T in super condition. Classic outline. Rather narrow in front.
SpPB (8) 1 Hunt’s Carpaccio Shopaholic. B/T youngster with the type, construction, movement and temperament that I had hoped to find. Best Puppy. 2 Widdop’s Jondac Golden Dream. Clear red with a gorgeous head, lovely hindquarters which she used, good bone and feet. 3 Freer’s Switherland Malibu. B/T, another lovely baby and with pups like this the future of the breed is assured.
SpJB (7) 1 Munt’s Pipersvale Stella Artois. Clkear red with a lovely outline both posed and on the move. Used her hindquarters to advantage. Glorious head and colour. 2 Pearson’s Skykiss Sweet Dreamer. Well marked silver dapple displaying a super sensible temperament, sound on the move. 3 Spencer’s Chelridge Apple Brown Betty. Clear dark red, rather rangey at present. Will watch for her to mature with interest.
SpYB (12) 1 McAlister’s Lockfyne Sweet Breeze. Light red bitch with classic outline that most appealed to me, which she kept at all times. Well constructed throughout which she demonstrated on the move, Res CC. 2 Jones’ Radclyffe Lullula. Another well constructed youngster who moved true coming and going. Is full of herself and her handler worked hard to get the best out of her. 3 Metcalf’s Bronia Saucy Sara at Metadale. Another very sound bitch who uses her hindquarters well. This was a very strong class, I loved so many of them.
PGB (15) Reed’s Hobbithill Elenwe. Very pretty clear red with lovely outline posed and on the move. 2 Winchurch’s Donnadoon My Desire for Brianolf. B/T. Totally sound on the move both coming and going. Lovely outline on the move, which she lost when posed, for no other reason than a little none co-operation. 3 Jones’ Radclyffe Lullula.
LB (10) 1 Callow’s Garthorne Highlight. S/R. Compact bitch who has matured into a lovely bitch. Super on the move and kept her lovely outline at all times. 2 Hartley’s Lyrosh Miss Ellie May. Different type to above, but extremely worthy exhibit. Well constructed hindquarters which she used. 3 Holt and Evans’ Toleva True Print. B/T. Another very worthy exhibit in lovely condition. Outline that I admire, moved well.
OB (9) 1 Callow’s Garthorne Dreamer. B/T. A bitch who combines all of the qualities that I was looking for and then some. Totally correct construction all through and her movement coming and going confirmed this. A classic outline at all times added to all of this, a totally sensible temperament. CC and Best of Breed. 2 Melbourne’s Melriding Appamatox. B/T, a bitch of exquisite type with a super head. Lovely size. 3 Ergis’ Ch Siouxline Angelina. A bitch whose movement and temperament I have admired since she first came out and this has not changed a bit. A super temperament and a credit to the breed.
SpVetB (2) I had
some really great bitches in this entry on the day, and it was a pleasure to
judge them all. However, this class was very special indeed. Two superb examples
of the breed for their totally correct construction. 1 Melbourne’s Garthorne
Phillipa. Older sister of the Best of Breed winner and her litter sister, 2 Ch
Garthorne Penelope. The ringside seemed to agree with this as both bitches were
receieved with very warm applause.
