HOUNDSHOW 2003 Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) Judge: Mrs Sue Seath

A lovely entry both numerically and in depth of quality, especially in the bitches, where I could easily have awarded more than one CC. Temperaments were good apart from a couple of exceptions. Overall the quality of construction is high, but I was dismayed to find a large numbers of exhibits with poor hind movement going away with many toeing in and some even plaiting, although examining them on the table gave no indication that they would move badly. Maybe more exercise would help to tighten up their movement.
MPD. (4). 1. Jones’s, Radclyffe Melanocorypha. Striking shaded red with terrific bone. Excellent, well proportioned head with strong, long muzzle and dark oval eye. Reachy neck flowing into lengthy body with firm, level topline. Nicely angulated fore and hindquarters. Kept his lovely outline in profile on the move, holding a level topline. Strode out with confidence and style. Well presented and handled. 2. Callow’s, Matdays Mr Max of Garthorne. Smaller more compact black and tan. Pleasing head and eye. Well placed shoulders, good forechest and overall body shape with well angulated quarters, but just rising slightly in topline on the move at this stage. 3. Brown’s, Daiwdd the Red.
PD. (4). 1. Blackcurn-Bennett’s, Shardagang Tornado. Mature black and tan with lovely depth of body and overall balance. Pleasing masculine head. Well angulated at both ends and presents a lovely outline in stance. Moved freely in profile and also up and back, but just needs to tighten a little in topline. Lovely breed type. 2. Jones’s, Radclyffe Milvus. More mature, rangy black and tan of a different type to first. Will take longer to mature. A strong masculine head, lovely bone and good freedom of movement going round. Well angulated quarters to complete the picture. A promising young dog. Not quite as finished as first at the moment. 3. Hillan’s, Pattons Chocolate Ripple.
JD. (3). 1. Blackburn’s, Bardachs Santa Cruz to Stargang. Absolutley stunning black and tan puppy of nearly 10 months. Classic outline. That old cliche a ‘real standard in miniature’ springs to mind! Masculine head carried proudly on reachy neck running into a level topline, held on the move. Good shoulder placement and well angulated hindquarters. Never put a foot wrong and effortlessly powered round the ring with great length of stride keeping his lovely outline all the time. Moved soundly coming and going. Just loved him and hope with maturity he will go to the top. BPIB. 2. English’s, Mowbray Midnight Cowboy. Compact chunky red with a strong head. Lovely bone and depth of body with well sprung ribs. Would prefer tighter feet. Showed well, but not quite the freedom of hind movement of first but a lovely type. 3. Freer’s, Switherland Altarico.
SpBEGIN (2). 1. Spencer’s, Chelridge Piccolomini. I gather this black and tan wasn’t being handled by his owner and this was sadly reflected in his performance on the day. Where he seemed very unsettled in his class. Although displayed himself better in the challenge with his usual handler. Difficult to assess on the table, but moving round kept a good topline and held his outline well in profile. 2. Luke’s, Corrieknowe Christopher. Very nervous black and tan. Again difficult fully to assess on the table as he wouldn’t be handled by me. Good overall breed type and lept a reasonable outline in profile on the move but going close behind and in front.
PGD. (5). 1. Punter’s, Welcumen Whisky. Impressive black and tan dog who caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring. Absolutely classic Dachshund outline which he holds naturally. Masculine head carried proudly on reachy neck. Well placed shoulders, level topline with flow of underline to complement. Extremely well angulated quarters. He really comes into his own on the move, when he powers round the ring with great freedom of movement and length of stride in profile. One of very few on the day who moved correctly going away, with absolutely sound, parallel and accurate stride. So well balanced throughout. CC. 2. Shutt’s, Donnadoon Prince’s Passion. Smaller, more compact black and tan. Pleasing front and overall body shape and well angulated hindquarters. Just couldn’t match the movement of first. Losing his topline slightly in profile and moving closer behind. 3. Barber’s, Rivergate Gallanthus.
LD. (7). 1. Punter’s, Clipperdown Basil Welcumen. Sire of my CC winner and you can see he has passed on his best attributes to his son. Another lovely black and tan with wonderful breed type and again, excelling in outline and movement. Well proportioned, masculine head with good shape, dark eye. Long neck running into well placed shoulders. Good length of body and topline. Well angulated hindquarters. Keeps his lovely outline at all times and moves in profile with freedom and animation, holding a level topline. Like his son, he excells in parallel hind movement going away. Obviously a good sire with much to offer. 2. Scott’s, Bevrons General Monck. Black and tan with lovely breed type and similar outline to first. Good forechest and overall body shape and length with pleasing depth. Free strioding mover in profile, but couldn’t match the accuracy of movement up and down of first., 3. Sharkey’s, Nordach Oberon of Hyshope.
OD. (5). 1. Boyle’s, Zarcrest Smooth Addiction. Striking shaded red with excellent outline and movement. Lengthy, elegant dog with lovely construction. Proudly carried head, firm, level topline held on the move. Super body shape with flowing underline and well let down quarters. Another who really gets it all together on the move, when he dispays terrific length of stride and effortless freedom in profile movement. Looks like he could do a day’s work. RCC. 2. Callow’s, Ch. Garthorne Greer. Lovely black and tan of more compact type. So well put together with correctly placed shoulders and hind angulation to match. Holds an excellent outline with pleasing overall body shape and flow of underline. Less ground clearance than first. Another lovely dog with a lot to offer. A good mover who holds his shape going round. 3. Lashbrook’s, Milfer Jack the Lad.
V (3). In fact a lovely class of three bitches. 1. Ergis’s, Ch. Siouxline Angelina. Quality black and tan with excellent outline and construction. Well boned throughout. Copybook shoulders and front, excellent hind angulation to coplement. Really comes into her own on the move, with impressive ground covering, effortless movement in profile and absolutely true coming and going. One to be justly proud of. 2. Watkinson’s, Ch. Manakoora Mai Tai. Another quality bitch built on classic lines with everything in the right place. Lovely body shape and overall outline. Again, she excells on the move, with flowing free striding profile action, keeping her shape at all times. Just preferred the head of first, but two fantastic bitches in beautiful condition. 3. Melbourne’s, Garthorne Philippa.
MPB. (9). 1. Ergis’, Bronia Stunning Sophia for Siouxline. Lengthy, well boned red with feminine, well proportioned head, set on reachy neck running into well placed shoulders. Firm, level topline and flowing underline. Well angulated hindquarters. Well schooled exhibit who strode out freely with animation, holding a good outline in profile. Just needs to tighten in hind movement a little. Very promising puppy. 2. Crawley’s, Donnadoon Elouise at Doujac. Close up to first and could easily change places another time. Black and tan with striking outline both in stance and on the move. Construction pleased and so did her overall carriage and profile movement. Held her topline well going round. Another with much promise for the future. 3. Palin’s, Merehill Arfa Sixpence for Sanmik.
PB. (9). 1. Young’s, Willowheath Wanda. Elegant black and tan with superb breed type and classic outline. Feminine head, lengthy neck, flowing into well shaped body with good top, underline and depth for her age. Well let down quarters to complete the picture. Her good construction translated into free, easy movement enabling her to keep a good outline in profile. Should go on to do well with full maturity. BPB. 2. Blackburn-Bennett’s, Shardagang Sioux. Another quality black and tan. Litter sisier to first in PD class and similar remarks apply. Must have been a good litter to have two such nice ones to show. Well bodied bitch with pleasing angulation fore and aft. Confident mover and handler gets the very best from her. Really appealed for breed type and outline. 3. Reynold’s, Glenariff Bramble.
JB. (11). Strong class. 1. Hunt’s, Carpaccio Shopaholic. What a stunner! Couldn’t take my eyes off her from the moment she entered the ring. She had it all for me on the day. Elegant black and tan with feminine head, set on reachy neck flowing into excellent shoulders. Lovely body shape and spring of rinb with good topline and flow of underline to complement. Excellent hind angulation with terrific bend of stifle. Everything just flowed under my hands on the table examination and she didin’t disappoint on the move where she excells in ground covering. Free striding profile action. She flowed effortlessly round the ring, at one with her handler, displaying animation and soundness and keeping her outline at all times. Just loved her. CC and BOB. 2. Callow’s, Garthorne Lady in Black. Another quality exhibit from this very consistent exhibitor who obviously has the key to breeding and choosing the very best. Lengthy black and tan with appealing, feminine head and good reach od neck. Well angulated at both ends and good body shape and topline complete the picture. Moved freely going round and kept her lovely outline. 3. Newbury and Morris’s, Destiny of Dalegarth.
SpBEGIN (4). 1. Bursey’s, Hartlake Blackberry. Well constructed black and tan who needs a slightly firmer hand to enable her to display herself to advantage, especially on the move where she was all over the place. She had the best conformation in this class, but do take her to ringcraft. Good overall in body shape and angulation. Well worth persisiting with. 2. Fenton’s, Wingcrest Gaiety Girl. Ligher built black and tan but good length and overall shape. Just needs to body up a bit. 3. MacDonald’s, Bensarka Pepperpot.
PGB. (9). 1. Hartley’s, Lyrosh Special Edition. Well boned red with good substance throughout. Appealing feminine head with dark eye. Lengthy neck flowing into well placed shoulders. Good length of body with level topline which she holds on the move. Good hind angulation completed the picture. Strode out with animation in profile, holding her shape at all times. Well presented and handled. 2. Forster’s, Geffle’s, Prima Donna. Petitie black and tan with correct construction. Well angulated in front and behind with level topline. Moved very well with good length of stride keeping a good shape in profile. Just suffering a false pregnancy at present which sadly spoilt her underline on the day, but a quality bitch overall. 3. Mendes’s, Scharmein Cassia.
LB. (14). Strong class of quality bitches. 1. Mitchell’s, Bronia Luciana. Stunning black and tan with terrific quality and breed type. So well construted. Compact body with excellent shoulder placement and hind angulation. Good depth of body, topline and underline to complement. Absoulutely sound coming and going and keeps her shape in profile. Another who came into her own moving, with a free flowing stride. In close contention with my eventual winners in the challenge. LOved her. 2. Callow’s, Garthorne Highlight. Beautiful shaded red with excellent construction and movement. So close up to first they could easily change places on another occasion. Good length of body, level topline, sweeping underline. Well let down quarters with lovely bend of stifle. Very accurate movement coming and going and kept her lovely outline going round. 3. Ergis’s, Willowheath Susannah from Siouxline.
