MINIATURE SMOOTH HAIRED
I thank the exhibitors for kindly accepting me as a replacement judge on the day, when the appointed judge Mrs M Davies was unable to get to the venue due to the snow. There were also quite a few absentees in the classes for the same reason. It is over 5 years since I last judged this variety and I found hind movement had significantly improved since then. Conversely, it is now front movement that I feel needs attention. Many were moving close in front as a result of having what are colloquially known as "Queen Anne" front legs, where the upper arm is too short, the elbows protrude, and there is too much crook, causing the front feet to converge as the dogs move towards you. Nervousness is also still evident in a handful of exhibits and was so bad in once case, that I was bitten on the hand. This is unacceptable, and I penalised this trait heavily. On the plus side, there is great depth of quality in the bitches, and I was spoilt for choice when deciding the top awards. MPD (12, 2a) 1 Blackburn-Bennett's Stargang Motocross. Impressive mature black and tan. Strong masculine head, good reach of neck and well placed shoulders. Good body shape and well developed for age. Well angulated hindquarters. Good bone and substance throughout. Looks very smart standing, but is still a real baby on the move, being a little uncoordinated at times. Very promising. Best dog puppy. 2 Burton's Swingletrees Ready Teddy Go. Lengthy clear red who was also quite mature and well developed for his age. Pleasing for body shape, top and underline. Moved freely and held his shape in profile. Quality pup. 3 Kempton-Thorne's Lord Of The Dance At Knockboy. PD (13, 6a) 1 Kempton-Thorne's Lord Of The Dance At Knockboy. Up from 3rd in Minor puppy. Immature, but promising brindle with a good head and expression, pleasing angulation at both ends and overall good type. Moved freely in profile, but a little untidy and loose in front movement coming on. 2 Blackburn's Stargang What's Up Doc. Captivating smaller size black and tan. I could happily have taken him home. Compact and shapely in outline. Moved parallel up and back, but still needing to settle in topline in profile. Promising. 3 Paterson's Dappleccino Katen. JD (5, 2a) 1 Shutt's Just Dreaming At Donnadoon. Compact, well bodied chocolate. Pleasing head with good eye shape and pigment. Would prefer tighter feet and longer ribbing. Well angulated hindquarters. Held his shape in profile on the move the best in this class, but close in front movement coming towards. 2 Williams' Cwmhardian Mr Magoo. Tall and rangy black and tan who is a little too short in body and therefore unbalanced in outline. Would prefer better angulation at both ends. Moved parallel going away, but very close coming towards. 3 Miller's Tydurcwrt Romeo At Palsuz. PGD (9, 3a) 1 Winchurch's Brianolf Malachite. Eye-catching clear red with impressive overall outline. Arrogant head carriage and really "struts his stuff" on the move. Well proportioned head with lovely dark eye. Held a firm topline in stance and on the move. Good sweep of underline and moved well up and back. Kept his shape in profile movement. Well deserved Reserve CC. 2 Mortlock's Siouxline Magnus At Hertsmerry. Chunky black and tan with lovely substance throughout. Appealing head and expression. Moderately angulated both ends. Unfortunately doesn't make the best of himself either in stance or on the move as he roaches his topline in profile. 3 Gunning's Jenkerbell Merlot. LD (9, 5a) 1 Ergis' Siouxline Maverick. Smart clear red of taller type than 2nd, but mindful of the requirement in the new interim breed standard for good ground clearance, I decided to place him 1st. Well proportioned masculine head with good eye shape. Carries himself proudly on the move and holds his outline well in profile, just a bit close in front movement coming towards. Well handled and presented. 2 MacDonald's Bensarka The Midas Touch. Lower stationed, smaller size shaded red of totally different type to Maverick. Could be better constructed in front and this shows in his movement as he is a little elbowy and close in front movement and dips slightly behind the withers in profile. Also inclined to tummy tap in hind movement viewed in profile. Well boned for size. 3 Endersby's Mowbray Music Man. OD (10, 4a) 1 Ergis' Ch Siouxline Indigo. Elegant black and tan of quality. Well balanced, shapely outline. Excellent head and eye, well placed shoulders, firm topline and good flow of underline to complement. Well angulated hindquarters to complete the picture. Held his shape at all times in profile, and moved freely, with enthusiasm. Parallel action front and back. C.C. 2 Melbourne & Coxon's Melriding De Lafayette. Lengthy, low to ground black and tan. Well boned and bodied. Looks a picture stacked, but has a slight dip behind the withers moving in profile. 3 Ashwell-Carter's Siouxline Isaac. MPB (14, 5a) 1 Daykin's Barratini Jilly Cooper. Shapely black and tan with feminine head and expression. Excellent shoulders and front construction. Good body shape with good flow of underline and pleasing topline for age. Well angulated hindquarters. Moved true up and back and kept her shape in profile. Very promising, quality pup. 2 Fulcher's Swingletrees Dark Secret At Khandibah. Black and tan, very similar in type to 1st, but a little more compact in overall outline. Good head, body shape and topline. Kept her outline well in profile movement. Well handled. 3 Sheppard's Thystine Red Brocade. PB (14, 6a, 1 withdrawn) 1 MacDonald's Bensarka Sunrise. Smart shaded red. Well proportioned with good body shape, top and underline. Feminine, but well boned for size. Well angulated front and back and this translated into sound, free movement. Holds her shape well in profile. Well balanced overall. Handled and presented to advantage. Forgave shaved patch in coat on abdomen, as it will grow again. Am guessing she may have had an operation to remove a foreign body? Best Puppy In Breed. 2 Dunn's Bronia Golly Miss Molly At Ashridge. Shapely, well-boned black and tan. Well placed shoulders, prominent breastbone, good spring of rib and body shape. Well angulated quarters. Just losing her topline a shade in profile movement, and not quite as tidy in front movement coming towards as 1st. Quality puppy. 3 Ergis' Cwmdarhian Sian By Siouxline. JB (11, 5a) 1 Melbourne & Holdsworth's Barratini Hubble Bubble At Melriding. Well balanced black and tan. Feminine head and expression. Well placed shoulders with good length of upper arm to complement. Shapely body with level topline. Well angulated hindquarters. Moved true up and back and held her shape in profile. Just needs more confidence to project herself better and could be better handled to advantage. 2 Robinson's D'Arisca Barratine Bouquet. Much better handled black and tan. Shows herself off well. Lovely outline in stance and carries herself well on the move as she steps out with freedom of stride and great self-assurance. Well angulated fore and aft, but not quite as tidy in front action coming towards as 1st and would like longer ribcage. 3 MacClancy's Moynish Chestnut At Jaybo. Beg B (2) 1 Garrity's Holly Berry. Compact, chunky red. Well bodied with good bone and substance. Needs to gain confidence, but held her shape in profile movement better than 2nd. 2 Neill-Fraser's Tythe Julia. Very nervous and immature black and tan. Not making the best of herself either in stance or on the move. PGB (25, 12a) Very strong class. 1 Russell's Russteck Peatbog Fairy. Lengthy black and tan with impressive outline. Good body shape, top and underline and well angulated fore and aft. Elegant, well-balanced profile which she holds on the move. Steps out freely, and covers the ground well. Parallel action coming and going. Quality exhibit, shown to advantage to head this impressive class. 2 Richardson's Belazieth Magic Pearl. Black and tan, similar in type to 1st and close up. Pleased for well proportioned head, well placed shoulders, good body shape, firm topline and flow of underline. Strode out freely in profile, holding her outline well. Just carrying a little extra weight over her shoulders. 3 Daykin's Barratini Danneka. LB (12, 4a) Another good class. 1 Rowell's Emmajesk Amelia. Beautiful black and tan. Compact, well balanced outline with correct height to length ratio as desired by the new breed standard. My hands just flowed over her on the table, she is so well constructed and free of any exaggeration. Feminine head with keen, alert expression and good eye shape. Well bodied with good spring of rib and firm topline. Moderately angulated behind. Really comes into her own on the move, where she strides out effortlessly, holding her outline at all times. Excellent parallel action coming and going. Just loved her. Never put a foot wrong to take well deserved CC and BOB. 2 Andison & Peel's Clentry Forget Me Not. Compact clear red with lovely bone and substance. Well constructed with good angulation front and back and pleasing body shape. Carried herself well on the move, holding her outline in profile. Sound up and back. Another quality bitch. 3 Williams & Rose's Tythe Tempest. OB (8, 3) 1 Coxon's Ch & AM. Ch Grandgables Tickle My Fancy. Smart dark brindle with very impressive outline in stance and on the move. Shapely body. Correct shoulder placement and good length of upper arm to complement. Very well angulated behind. Moved out freely and held her shape. Would just prefer a better head to complete the picture. Reserve CC. 2 Barber's Ch Simply Red Ruby Of Rivergate. Beautiful clear red of quality. Elegant and feminine with lovely head and expression, which I preferred to 1st. Well constructed in front, lovely body shape and firm topline. Just slightly less well angulated behind than 1st which was what decided my placings. 3 MacDonald's Bensarka After Midnight. Best Breeder: Barratini. Four high class black and tans. Consistent for quality of overall conformation and uniformity of type, which was reflected in their movement. Breeder can be justifiably proud of these lovely exhibits.
