I would like to say a huge thankyou to the miniature smooth dachshund exhibitors
for giving me such a super entry at CRUFTS for what was my final judging
appointment. I will now stick to just showing my dogs. Thanks to the Crufts
committee for inviting me to judge what was the first variety of dachshund that
I owned and won my first CC with 50 years ago in 1969 and she was the first dog
I exhibited at Crufts that same year. This appointment gave me the honour of
judging and awarding CCs to the 6th dachshund variety so completing the set. I
would also like to thank my excellent stewards, Mr & Mrs Vines who organised the
ring and kept everything moving smoothly . My Best Bitch who was Best of Breed
gave me the great thrill of being the only Dachshund short listed in the Hound
Group.
VETERAN D [4 abs 1]
:
1st MRS K A HERRINGTON - CH KATHINGTON COEUR DE LION. Smart B/T boy, 11 years
young on the day. He still moves with great verve and soundness. He has a very
pleasing head and neck leading into correct shoulder placement. He has enough
forechest and good ribbing with short loin.
His movement is brisk and sound and he keeps a correct topline both standing and
moving
2nd MRS V NOLAN - KELMBECK LORD OF THE DANCE AT EDDYVAL. Another B/t boy almost
10 years old. Very pleasing head neck and body, well angulated and had sound
movement. Unlucky to meet 1st who is on such top form.
3rd MRS I M PHILLIPS - DACTRA FRANK FURTER OF ROBINSWOOD. Another B/T of good
overall make and shape completing a good trio.
Just rounding in topline on the move which cost him a higher placing.
MIN PUPPY D [2 abs 0] :
Two promising puppies in this class both with a bit of maturing to do.
1st MR J RUDKIN - SIOUXLINE ROSS FOR DYNASTYDAX. Well covered red baby.
Presented a lovely outline standing and moving.
I would like a more masculine head which may develop as he matures. Neat front
construction with well tucked in elbows giving good front movement
but just needs to strengthen up a little in hind movement.
2nd MRS C A HOUSE - AMBIESQUE ATTAIN AT GLEADSBURY. Brindle boy a bit rangy at
the moment and could be tighter in elbows coming towards.
I loved his head and overall conformation. He just needs to carry a tad more
body weight and gain more ring presence and then he could quite possibly change
places with the 1st
PUPPY D [6 abs 2]
1st MR J & MS K ANDISON & PEEL - CLENTRY HEAR ME ROAR. I really like the type of
this clear red boy. Strong masculine head on lengthy
neck leading to well placed shoulders and correct length of upper arm. Good
forechest, ribbing and keel and well angulated hindquarters. He needs to
learn to show himself off more in the ring as at the moment he is not
co-operating with his handler at all. Won this class and Best Dog Puppy on his
type and construction. With more ring presence he would have pushed the bitch
hard for Best Puppy. I was interested to see they both have the same sire.
2nd MR A, MISS L M & MR L J BEACH - BEACHDAX RED HOT BLAZE. Shaded red boy of
different type to above. Head is a little short and broad for me. Compact body
which I would prefer a little longer. He is a very good showman who moves
soundly both fore and aft keeping a good profile.
3rd MISS A MASON - TECKELTOWN SOMETHING MAGIC Sweet little B/T. Rather feminine
in head. quite nicely constructed and sound in movement.
A little overawed by the occasion. I think this young handler could go far with
a top quality dog.
JUNIOR D [11 abs 0]
1st MR A BARRETT - AYSEEBEE TWINKLING STAR. Smart b/t presented in tip top
condition. Pleasing head and eye. Good forechest and front construction. Well
ribbed up body leading to well turned stifles and strong, parallel hocks which
he uses to advantage on the move. Should have a bright future.
2nd MRS P A & MISS E A HYSLOP - ZILVERAAT GOLDFINK Clear red boy with lovely
head and eye. Good body proportions with long ribbing.
When he did co-operate with his handler moved soundly keeping a good topline. A
very typy dog.
3rd 13144 MR A CHARLESWORTH - KEYDAX LEROY. This boy was quite similar to the
2nd and a lot of the same remarks apply.
He just lost out because he was not quite holding as good a topline on the move.
YEARLING D [6 abs 0]
1st MRS F MITCHELL - BRONIA BIAGGIO B/T dog who won this class with ease. Very
good construction and sound both coming and going.
He struts around the ring as though he owns it. If I was to be hyper critical I
would like a more masculine head. I should think he will gain his title with
ease.
2nd MRS P A & MISS E A HYSLOP - ZILVERAAT GOLDFINK Repeat 2nd in Junior.
3rd MR J & MS K ANDISON & PEEL - CLENTRY KNOCK EM DEAD NORMAN. This was a really
nice B/T with very good head and neck. Lovely to go over on the table.
Unfortunately He was very reluctant to co-operate with the handler either
standing or moving. What I did see of his movement he could move soundly.
POST GRAD D [13 abs 1]
1st MR L J BEACH - IZIA KLARA DIFINO (IMP SVN) Very nice red dog. Pleasing head,
well constructed body. Moves woth power and precision.
The complete showman both standing and moving.
2nd MISS D CAREY - DONNADOON DARK MOONBEAM. I really liked this B/T dog and with
a bit more ring presence could have pushed hard for 1st place. Nothing
exagerated about him but correct in all departments and sound in movement.
3rd MISS J JENNINGS - DUDDONDAXS JUDGE JUDE FOR JENIVON. Pleasing red dog.
Conical head, adequate forechest and ribbing. Good hind angulation. Sound
movement.
LIMIT D [14]
:
1st MRS S M ERGIS - SIOUXLINE JACOB JW. Smart light red dog. Fair head & neck.
Good forechest, ribbing and front and rear angulation. Maybe slightly long in
hock which results in a restricted hind movement. Not quite the reach and drive
I like although he is smart in profile. a worthy winner of this class.
2nd MISS A F CALLOW - GARTHORNE T-REX. Shaded red dog. Well constructed. Moves
soundly keeping a good topline. Just not quite as outgoing as 1st.
3rd MR M J & MR G J PAGET & CARROLL - MARVALE MASTER OF DISGUISE. B/T Completed
a good trio. I would like a better head but he is otherwise very well
constructed and moved soundly keeping a good outline.
OPEN D [11 abs 2]
This was a super Open Dog class and it was literally splitting hairs to decide
on placings.
1st MR M J & MR G J PAGET & CARROLL - CH MARVALE UP WITH THE LARK. Dog CC. This
dog is very much what I like. Clear red. Good neck & front construction. Really
good bone and substance which many lack Long ribbed body. Super hammy quarters.
Moved soundly front and rear keeping a good outline. Just did enough on the
stack to take 1st place. In the Challenge for BOB he gave away to the bitch on
her better attitude and showmanship.
2nd MR A BARRETT - CH AYSEEBEE RUMOUR HAS IT. RCC. B/t boy of different type to
1st but equally correct. He has a good head and eye pleasing neck leadingto
correct shoulders. Good front and rear angulation. Well off for bone in a small
package. Excellent topline both standing and moving. Very smart, sound movement.
3rd MR P PROTHEROE - CH ROYALMAPLE ANKY PANKY. Red dog of very good type. Good
head and neck, leading into well placed shoulder and upperarm. Prominent
forechest. Good ribbing. Well angulated both ends. Moved soundly keeping a
correct outline at all times.
Class GOOD CIT D Entries: 1 Absentees 0
1st MISS J STARTUP - BARISSE A TOUCH OF MAGIC 8 years b/t enjoying his day out.
Class 2160 VETERAN B Entries: 8 Absentees 1
1st MRS D MELBOURNE - CH GOLDEN ALGONQUINETTE OF MELRIDING. I still love
everything about this bitch to whom I awarded her 1st CC
6 years ago. Although she is obviously showing her age slightly she still
carries herself so well and moves soundly keeping a perfect outline at all
times.
One who I would have loved to own.
2nd MRS WEST - ARCHIDAX BONNEVILLE. Another really smart little red girl.
Unlucky to come up against one of my all time favourites as she is a credit to
her owner. I liked her a lot. Good head carried high, correct constuction from
front to rear and moved out smartly keeping a good profile both standing and
moving.
3rd MISS A F CALLOW - CH GARTHORNE LITTLE EVA. This little red girl put all in
to come 3rd in what was a quality veteran bitch class.
She hadn't quite as good head as the 1st two hence 3rd place because everything
else was just what I was looking for. Still sound in movement and showing well.
MIN PUPPY B [2]
Two very happy baby puppies both showing promise for the future
:
1st MRS S, MRS S & MR M DYER & ODDIE - RIOWOOD RUMBA TO SHARNPHILLY. 1st a
slightly more mature Brindle girl. Loved her head and neck.
Good prosternum following through to good length of keel and ribbing. Looked
super standing but topline just tended to rise a little on the move.
Movement was sound both coming towards me and going away.
2nd MRS S M ERGIS - SIOUXLINE RACHEL. Smaller more compact B/T. Very well
constructed in body. Sound in movement. Not quite the
head of 1st for me and seemed less mature even though both were about the same
age. I will watch both at future shows with interest.
PUPPY B [10 abs 1] :
1st MRS C RUSSELL - RUSSTECK TEA CAKE. 1st and Best Puppy in Breed. Elegant B/T
with lovely head and neck. Well constructed with prominent breastbone, neat
underline and good ribbing. She has well angulated front construction and
hindquarters.
She moved out well presenting a super topline and looked a picture both standing
and on the move. Really promising puppy who I am sure will have a bright future.
2nd MRS C DARE - DARSOMS ZOE. B/t in a smaller package than 1st. Very good shape
both standing and moving. Just preferred the head and neck of the 1st.
3rd MR A, MISS L M & MR L J BEACH - BEACHDAX DIAMOND DIVA. Another B/T of a
different type to 1 & 2. She is slightly shorter and taller than the first two
and will no doubt appeal to other judges who prefer that type. She had a good
head, soundly constructed body and moved soundly both ways keeping a good
outline.
JUNIOR B Entries: 15 Absentees 0
1st MISS B FOSSETT - LOKMADI PEGGY SUE FOR BRYSDAX. Pretty red bitch. Very well
balanced from her head and neck through a well constructed body to good rear
angulation. She was very well handled and moved soundly holding her topline both
on the move and when stacked.
2nd MRS S & MR J HUNT - CARPACCIO CLARICE CLIFF JW. Sound B/T bitch. Attractive
head and neck. Prominent forechest.
Well ribbed up body and chunky hindquarters which she uses to advantage on the
move. Moves soundly holding a good topline, picture spoilt today by a milky
underline
3rd MISS T & MISS J MUTTON - MONTONE BE BRAVE. Shaded Red bitch. Not disgraced
by 3rd place. She has a lot to like. Quite good head,
well developed forechest following through to a firm body with lovely hammy
hindquarters. Moved soundly .
YEARLING B [12 abs 1] :
1st MRS A CALLOW - GARTHORNE GRACE KELLY. Loved this Red Brindle bitch. Very
elegant with ideal height to length. Should make the top in my opinion Lovely
head, eye and neck leading to textbook shoulders. So good to go over as she just
flows smoothly from forechest to well turned stifles.
She moves precisely holding her topline and looks excellent when stacked. Pushed
hard in the challenge.
2nd MRS Y KENT - LOKMADI MAGIC DRAGON. Smaller red bitch with everything in
proportion. Pretty head and eye. Well constructed all through. Moved so soundly.
3rd MRS D A, MESSRS M & G MELBOURNE, PAGETT, CARROLL MELRIDING SEA INFANTA .B/t
bitch who was being a bit of a challenge for her handler. I liked her type a lot
She has good head although her eyes are a bit round. Well develped body with
good angulations of shoulder and hinquarters which was obviouswhen moving but
just needed to co-operate more.
POST GRAD B [18]
1st MR J & MS K ANDISON & PEEL - CLENTRY GOOSBERRY. Very nice, typey B/T bitch.
She has a classical head and eye on good neck. Prominent front, good length of
shoulder blade with correct angle and length of upper arm. Well ribbed up body
and good hind angulation. She moved out well with plenty of reach and drive.
2nd MS C SCOTT - WOLFERLOW BLACKBERRY PIE. This b/t was very similar in type to
the 1st but shorter in body. Liked her overall appearance.
She has a good head and a soundly constructed body. Moves soundly holding a good
topline.
3rd MRS H SMITH - WOLFERLOW MAID MARION. Another B/t out of the same mould as
2nd.
Not surprising as I see they have the same breeding. All the above remarks apply
but this one was just not as outgoing as the other two.
LIMIT B [14 abs 3]
This class and the Open class were very difficult to place as both classes had
many bitches in them to whom I would have been happy to award a CC.
1st S & R BURKE & MANSTON - RADCLYFFE ACANTHUS. RCC. I have always admired this
bitch and was delighted she didn't disappoint on closer inspection. she is
a dark red bitch with superb construction from the tip of her nose to the end of
her tail. Love her head and eye and elegant neck which leads into smooth
shoulders and front assembly. She has a firm topline held on the move and
positive movement both away and back and in profile.
2nd MRS C WORSWICK - DOLYHARP SONATA Another one of my favourites. Smaller clear
red with sweet head and eye. Well covered body and good angulation. She moves
soundly keeping a firm topline. Splitting hairs.
3rd MR M ODDIE - RIOWOOD TIGER SOCKS. Lovely Red Brindle bitch giving away on
maturity to the 1st and 2nd. She has all the essentials in place.
Lovely head, neck shoulders, ribbing and quarters. Moved soundly with drive
holding her head up high. And so she should. Her day will come I am sure.
OPEN B [16] Entries: 16 Absentees 0
I don't think I have ever before judged a class with such depth of quality as in
this Open Class. I would have happily awarded many of them a CC.
:
1st MR P PROTHEROE - CH PICOLLO TECKEL NEVER SAY NEVER AT ROYALMAPLE (IMP RUS)
JW 1st CC & BOB and shortlisted in the Hound Group.
This little Pocket Rocket never stopped showing her heart out right to the end
of the day. If asked beforhand I might have said she was to
fine boned for me but on going over her she is not fine at all but just in
proportion to her size. Her head is a perfect conical shape,
she carries it on a very proud neck. She has adequate forechest and her front
constuction just all fits her perfectly. She has well turned stifles
and straight parallel hocks which she uses to power around the ring. Her sheer
attitude and showmanship won her the Best of Breed over a lovely dog
and I was thrilled to watch her shortlisted by Frank Kane in a Star Studded
Hound Group.
2nd MRS S M ERGIS - CH SIOUXLINE RAPUNZEL WITH MELRIDING. Quality red bitch and
a worthy Champion. She is also a great showgirl.
She fits all the criteria I was looking for eg Good head & neck. Correct in
front and hind construction with good ribbing and holds a perfect topline on the
move. Just not as steady in hind movement as the CC & RCC winners.
3rd MR P PROTHEROE - ROYALMAPLE DAPHNE BLAKE. I really like this bitch and on
the first go around I thought she might have been my winner but
on the stack she insisted on sinking through her shoulders which spoiled the
look of her and in this quality entry it was splitting hairs so she paid the
penalty. However she has all the essentials to get there in that she has a
lovely head and a very well constucted body and moves vey soundly holding her
topline.
GOOD CIT B [9 abs 2] :
1st MISS A MASON - TECKELTOWN YOURE THE ONE. Sweet b/t baby. 5th out of 9 in the
strong puppy bitch class. Nicely constructed puppy, sound in movement and very
well handled.
2nd MRS WEST - ARCHIDAX BETTY BOOP. Dark red bitch. Little to choose between
these two. I would like a slightly more refined head. She had a well covered
body and moved soundly both ways keeping a level topline
3rd MRS J KILROY - BRONIA RAMONA AT JANACOP. B/t bitch of good construction but
was not as sound in movement as 1st and 2nd.
