I am grateful to the committee for giving me this opportunity to judge at a general championship show, albeit non-CC classes. It was no sinecure, six hours in the ring in hot, sunny and windy conditions, with one short comfort break! I was pleased with the entry, especially the two miniature breeds with as many exhibits as in some CC classes and I was very happy to have a very helpful and experienced steward in Karen Rimmer: thank you, Karen! The grass was a little long for some of the miniature exhibits. I am constantly amazed at the number of dogs with tartar and those with totally clean teeth were very much in the minority. No scales for the non-CC miniature breeds, sadly.
Miniature Smooth-haired Dachshunds
Too many exhibits long in loin, few meeting the compact 2:1 ratio and sufficient clearance. When striding out many have a ‘flappy’ front gait and do not drive adequately from the rear. In general, front feet were poor and lacked tightness. I was also surprised at the number of weak jaws.
PD: (5,3) 1. Jennings’ Jenivons Bad Habits, 7 month old red, pleasing head, good dentition, clean neck leading into a level topline, a tad short in upper arm (though not alone in that), excellent prosternum, a little longer in loin than I would like, moved well if not totally parallel BPD & BP 2. Herald’s Sonora Dark Treacle at Winterfield, 11 month old Black & Tan (B&T), good head and teeth, decent front and prosternum though a bit short in upper arm, good topline if a little short in ribbing, moved with confidence, quite parallel at the rear but lacked rear drive.
JD: (4,0) 1. Wilson’s Shantallah Secret Shadow at Linburndax, 17 month old B&T, good size and well proportioned though a bit short in ribbing, good masculine head, good front, level topline, well muscled rear and drove out well with parallel movement BJ 2. Wood’s Llansansior Chervil, 15 month old shaded red, slightly heavy at front and low to ground, good head and decent length of neck, level topline, rather short in upper arm, moved well 3. Martlew’s Shelsall Red Cardinal
Yearling: (0,0)
PGD: (2,0) 1. Wood’s Llanasior Chervil, as above 2. Gilbert’s Linburndax Rachs Tru Haggis at Gilberdax, 2 year old B&T, masculine head, well proportioned body, good clearance, a bit short in upper arm, good level topline though would have liked longer ribbing, nicely angled at rear but liked his tail too much
OD: (5,1) 1. Mason’s Ch Teckeltown Master Piece, 2 year old red, compact, pleasing outline, good head but a bit short in muzzle, well balanced, strong front, just enough clearance, a fraction short in upper arm, decent length of neck, good ribbing, moved out well and fairly parallel BD 2. Paget & Carroll’s Marvale Firecrest, 16 month old red, compact, another short in muzzle, good shoulder construction but not the neck or topline of class winner, a bit deep in chest, good ribbing, moved well RBD 3. Jennings’ Marvale Northern Cardinal at Jenivon
VD: (0,0)
PB: (7,1) 1. Jennings’ Jenivons I See a Star, 7 month old chocolate, feminine head, ear set a bit low, a little long and low, reasonable neck, good front, top line tended to sag a little but will no doubt straighten with age, moved well with parallel action BPB 2. Cumberland’s Mumysami Beth Level of Crazy, 6 month old B&T, compact, reasonable clearance, good head and neck, decent front if slightly upright in shoulder, good ribbing, moved well but not as well as class winner 3. Hardy’s Rossmia Kensington Beauty
JB: (6,2) 1. Wilson’s Clentry Back in Black at Linburndax, 12 month old B&T, feminine head, compact, good neck flowing into good shoulders and topline, reasonable clearance, good topline and rear angulation, moved well with good parallel rear drive 2. Hardy’s Rossmia Kensington Beauty, 11 month old red, compact, feminine head, lower to ground than desirable and rather short in upper arm, level topline, moved well 3. Viladash She Shot the Bullet
YB: (2,0) 1. Wilson’s Linburndax Haggis Bon Babe, 19 month old B&T, well proportioned, good head and neck, enough front, level topline, movement not that parallel 2. Forgione’s Rusalugio Swankypants, 13 month old red, compact, feminine head, sufficient neck and front, tendency to roach back and let down on the move
PGB: (6,1) 1. Jennings’ Marvale’s Jena at Jenivon, 19 month old red, feminine head, decent length of neck, good front but a bit deep in chest and a tad short in upper arm, good ribbing, sufficient clearance, moved really well RBB 2. Herald’s Stargang Zebra Finch at Winterfield, 2 year old brindle, feminine head and good eye but short in muzzle, decent neck and sufficient front, good ribbing, moved out with confidence 3. Wilson’s Zilveraat Moulin Rouge
OB: (8,3) 1. Mason’s Collidach Hot Springs at Teckeltown, 2 year old brindle, full of spirit, feminine head, good neck and shoulders, enough front and sufficient clearance, level topline, moved out with real drive from powerful hindquarters and fairly parallel BB, BoB 2. Thomson’s Crosscrop Gabriella, 23 month old red, feminine head, good eye and ear set, strong prosternum though rather deep in chest, down on pasterns, level topline and moved out well 3. Whyte’s Dachienne Strawberry Swing
VB: (1,0) Cumberland’s Whirlygig Wottadoo at Mumysami, 11 year old lady who belied her years, nice head and shoulders, strong front if deep in chest, level topline, good rear angulation, moved out soundly BV
