Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshunds- Christine Russell
Thank you to Welks Officers and Committee for making me feel so welcome and to fellow judges for their stimulating conversation. Hospitality as usual was perfect. Thank you to the exhibitors for your entries and I appreciate the distance travelled by some. These are my general thoughts on the exhibits. The two main faults that I found were
1. the dogs were overweight. I was there to judge Miniature Smooth Haired dachshunds, to the breed standard which stipulates 10lbs minimum 11 lbs maximum. I’m afraid a 13+ dachshund does not comply with the Breed standard. There is always a bit of leeway and up to half a pound would be acceptable. Weight has always been an issue in Miniature Dachshunds but it is now creeping up and up. This was not such an issue pre Covid but the lack of use of scales over the past few years has exacerbated this problem. As this is an issue being discussed at length within the breed council, I felt that I needed to make a stand. 72% of the dogs were over 11 lbs and 27 % were over 12 lbs. There are some clever breeders out there perhaps they should just look on this as their next challenge. Instead of changing the Breed Standard to fit what they are breeding. Breed the perfect Miniature Dachshund that complies with the weight restrictions.
2. I found that there were very few exhibits that had enough length of sternum. They looked perfect in profile but the sternum stopped just behind the elbows. Something else to improve on.
3. Just another observation. Wrinkles are undesirable and should not appear anywhere on a smooth coat. I would also like to see black/ tans with thumb prints and pencil marks on their feet and toes. Just the finer details that complete the picture.

1st Mrs C Scott CH WOLFERLOW WILL SCARLET J W. A Black/tan dog of 9 years. He has a good head, eye and ear set. He is a bit upright in shoulder. He has a level topline and had good ribbing. In good condition for his age. He was also good on the move.
2ndMrs I M Phillips STARGANG HIGH HOPES OF ROBINSWOOD Red dog with an ok head. Also in good condition for a 9 year old. He has a prominent keel not so good on the top line and not as good on the move as 1.
Minor Puppy Dog
1st Mrs A J Bullis. AMAFFREY HENRY Just a baby and still a bit loose. Beautiful head, eye and teeth. He has a good outline. His feet could be tighter, he moved ok with all limbs going in the right direction. He has reasonable ribbing though he looked a bit tucked up. Perhaps because of the cold.
2nd Mrs R & Miss S J Herald. SONORRA DARK TREACLE AT WINTERFIELD A very big puppy. He has a nice head and eye. A prominent keel but ribbing could be better. Good tight feet. He lost his topline a bit on the move.

1st Mrs R & Mr C Williams & Moes. CWMDARHIAN JOE CALZAGHE Black/tan baby just 6 months. He has a classic outline good head and teeth. Neck flows into a level topline and good tail set. Prominent keel, ok ribbing and he moved out well. Promising. My RCC winner 2nd Mrs L Coxon D’ARISCA DINNER AT EIGHT He has a good outline though I preferred the head type of one. His feet need to be a bit tighter and he wasn’t moving as well as he should. He was the correct weight. 3rd Mrs J Halsall KIDDLES COLA

1st Mr M & Mr G J Paget & Carroll. MARVALE FIRECREST He has a pleasing head though a bit round in the eye and his teeth were fine. His head and neck flow into a level topline and his outline and ribbing are good. He moved out well on tight feet. 2nd Mr J Magri LOKMADI CALL ME LOUIS ROZAMIE Brindle dog not as outgoing as my winner. He has a pleasing head and good outline. His ribs are good and he moved out well. 3rd Mrs N Beer LOWRIDER ALL MIGHT AND MAGIC

1st Mr L & Mrs L Cross & Black RIOWOOD RED BOOTS JW Easy winner of this class and my CC winner. Red dog of the correct weight. Very good head and eye, good tight feet. Prominent keel travelling well under giving plenty length for ribs to attach to. He moved out well but to be critical I would like a bit more length to second thigh which would give him more driving power. 2nd Miss T & Miss J Mutton IVAN PODDUBNY IZ OMSKOI KREPOSTI FOR MONTONE (IMP RUS) A very big impressive dog. He is very nicely put together throughout. Good head and eye, decent feet and good ribbing looks good in profile. Such a pity he is so big. 3rd Miss J Jennings MARVAL NORTHERN CARDINAL AT JENIVON.
Open Dog Mr J & Ms K Andison & Peel CLENTRY DONNIE DARCO Beautiful Black/tan boy with a great outline. Just my type and I have admired him always. He has a classic head and eye, good teeth, good length of neck and sloping shoulders all flowing together into a level topline. Tail set perhaps a tad high as I prefer a more rounded croup. He wasn’t as sound on the move as I have observed in the past and definitely carrying excess fat. He is a big boy on a good day but today I couldn’t forgive his body mass. My biggest disappointment to date. 2nd Miss L M B & Messrs L J B & A B Beach RIOWOOD ARIZONA JW Another big boy. Brindle in colour with a good head eye and good teeth. Correct lay of shoulder and level topline. Prominent keel and good ribbing altogether a pleasing outline. He moved out well.

1st Mrs S M Ergis CH SIOUXLINE RAPUNZEL WITH MELRIDING Preferred the head and tight feet of this one. She has a good outline with well laid back shoulders. She moved out well around the ring. 2nd Mrs A Tree ARDENRUN SEA SHANTY BY KEIMANTRE shorter coupled than my first placing with a more toyish head. Both girls were a good size and weight. Two lovely old red ladies.
Minor Puppy Bitch
1st Mrs A J Bullis AMAFFREY FLO RIDER Black/tan bitch with a good outline. She had a pleasing head, and her shoulders were ok. She had enough ribbing and she moved out well 2nd Mr S Fleming BROGANSIAN GINGERELLA This bitch was a bit longer cast than one. Her sternum was short and she is a bit longer in the loin. I preferred the head on this one. She appeared to be moving with a high step in front.

1st Williams & Moes Mrs R & Mr C. CWMDARHIAN COLD AS ICE Lovely red puppy. Everything in proportion at the moment and she moved well. Just preferred the head on her brother and thought that he was that bit more mature when they met in the challenge for best puppy. 2nd Beach Miss L M B & Messrs L JB & AB BEACHDAX SWEET MELODY These two girls could easily change places depending on the preference for type. She has a beautiful head, eye and good teeth good length of neck and prominent keel. She too moved out well. 3rd Mr J Magri ROZAMIE ABRACADEBRAH
Junior Bitch 1st Mr J E Hunt MYLFORBE RED VELVET AT SUNARA Lovely red bitch with a pleasing outline. Her head is ok with a good shaped eye. She has a prominent keel with the sternum going well under and good ribbing. She moved the best in the class. 2nd Mr J M Rudkin CROSSCOP IF I COULD DREAM FOR DYNASTYDAX Red Bitch who has a good overall shape. She has a correct lay of shoulder and good front. Ribbing is good and she moved out well. 3rd Mr R Graham BRONIA CAMILLE TAF
Yearling Bitch 1st Paget & Carrol Mr MJ & MR GJ. MARVALE SANDPIPER Red bitch with a lovely outline. Very sound with a houndy head and almond eye. Good tight feet and she moved best in the class. 2nd Mrs A Callow GARTHORNE GLENDA red brindle bitch with a nice outline who was also very sound. I preferred the head on my first placing. This bitch was not as positive on the move as my winner. 3rd Herald Mrs R & Miss S J STARGANG ZEBRA FINCH AT WINTERFIELD

1st Beach Miss L M B & Messrs L J B & A B. BEACHDAX ABOUT DAMN TIME She is a nice type with a lovely head. She has a good front and prominent keel and reasonable ribbing. She moved a bit wide behind and wasn’t as confident as I would have liked. 2nd Mrs B J Rose ROSENCRANTZ OPHELIA Black/Tan with a nice head and eye. She has good shoulder and front. Her keel is prominent and length of sternum is reasonable. She could do with more rear angulation. 3rd Mrs A Tree KEIMANTRE MOLLY MOO

She is longer cast and she moved the best in the class. 2nd Andison & Peel Mr J & Ms K MINIDOGLAND BUNNY (IMP RUS) Black/tan lovely bitch with a good head and good length which I preferred to one. She just was not relaxed and did not move out as well as my first placing. 3rd Melbourne, Pagett & Carroll SHANTALLAH ADELAIDE OF MELRIDING.

She has a good front with prominent keel and good ribbing. Nice tight feet. She is not overdone in any department a good honest bitch. She moved out well keeping a good topline and never stopped showing. 2nd Rudkin Mr J M DYNASTYDAX ALFREDA JW Black/Tan bitch with a more compact shape and good tight feet.
