Always a pleasure to judge this variety with plenty of quality throughout the higher classes and some excellent youngsters too. Quite a few charming real babies whose progress I’ll follow. Plenty of decent shoulders and upper arms though some a shade forward placed. A few slightly too long in loin. Head types, as ever, varied considerably. Interesting to judge without weighing for the first time in the UK. Going by the Australian model I suspect that size will gradually creep up but please not too much so! All were well covered. My efficient stewards helped us get through in good time and Midland Counties’ hospitality was as always exemplary.
MPD (8) Several to watch for here. 1 Fleming’s Brogansian Fleetwood, impressive stylish 8 months b/t of real Dachshund balance, good male head & arrogant expression, reachy arched neck, clean shoulders, strong bone, correct feat, plenty of forechest, strode out with attitude, true behind, a shade close in front but most promising. BPD; 2 Kent’s Lokmadi Charles Rex, smart sound slightly smaller 8 months shaded red with a lot of quality, attractive head & expression, enough neck, decent shoulders & upper arm, firm elbows, has plenty of time to let down a bit more behind but came into his own & levelled up on the move; 3 Page & Carroll’s Jenivon’s Jonny Gaunt. PD (4) 1 Mason’s Teckeltown The Showman, smart 11 months red of excellent overall balance, well ribbed, correct topline, scored on hindquarters with plenty of drive, well angulated in front too but can just fine down over the shoulders a shade. Close up to BPD, just preferred Fleetwood’s head; 2 Tite’s Llennocor Little Red Devil, smaller neatly made 12 months shaded red with plenty of quality, Well placed & angulated shoulders, good length of ribbing, retained his topline going round. Head could be a shade more masculine. Appealing puppy, bone & drive the deciding factors here; 3 Morton’s Benzden Bergamot of Monrateckel. JD (7) Excellent class. 1 Hanney-Mitchell’s Bronia Daimmen, classy 12 months b/t, attractive male head with typical expression from correct shaped eyes, super neck & shoulder with just the right angles, clean line from ears to tail, well ribbed, true coming & going, retained topline in profile, surefire champion; 2 Andison’s Clentry Desperado, houndier type 15 months b/t with plenty of scope, looks like a slower developer than 1 but should be worth waiting for, super reach of neck, loved his arrogant attitude going round, true both ways, marginally preferred forehand of 1 but another to watch; 3 Forge’s Normpug Roman Holiday. PGD (5) 1 Mills-Jones’ Carlita Isn’t It Ironic, handsome red of excellent type & balance, OK head, plenty of bone for his size, good keel & ribbing, true behind, plenty of reach & drive; 2 Strange’s Bronia's Armand at Cazdachs, similar type red with plenty of quality, excellent topline retained on the move, good unexaggerated hindquarters, looked well going round, a shade narrower in front than 1 who had a bit more bone; 3 Corominas’ Scenterbay Rafael for Ruichango. LD (1) 1 Williams’ Lokmadi Call Me Louis Rozamie, absentees left him on his own today, this brindle needs a bit more confidence in the ring but settled enough to earn his place, decent type & balance, nicely arched neck, good topline, OK front angles, stood a shade wide in front but better on the move, good reach but could have a shade more drive. OD (7) Super class, would have happily signed a ticket for all those placed. 1 Andison’s Ch Clentry Donnie Darco, super little hound who caught my eye going round with his carriage & attitude, b/t with plenty of scope, enough ground clearance, super front with the right angles & plenty of forechest, elegant neckline, masculine head with strong jaws, moved true with great style. CC; 2 Williams & Moes’ Ch Cwmdarhian Joe Calzghe, top class b/t, a shade lower to ground, male head, clean neckline, good forechest, typical front & feet, super bone, firm topline standing & moving, splitting hairs here. RCC; 3 Melbourne, Paget & Carroll’s Ch Melriding Black Tom. VD (2) 1 Jennings’ Duddondaxs Judge Jude for Jenivon, smart typy 7 years red, quality head, OK front & feet, well ribbed, enough bone, moved soundly with plenty of enthusiasm, in great condition. BV; 2 Phillips’ Stargang High Hopes of Robinswood VW, stately 10 years red. Sound & steady on the move, excellent topline, neat well made front, one I liked as a pup & good to see him in his mature years, not quite the sheer oomph on the move of 1 today. Beginners D (3) 1 Wood’s Llansansior Chervil at Littlecopse, sturdy red with plenty of bone & substance, masculine head, neat front, firm elbows, good feet & topline, moved soundly, could have a shade more reach & drive; 2 Reynolds’ Kleinstar Blue Moon, elegant type b/t, good reach of neck, correct keel & ribbing, free active mover, could have a bit more hind angulation, winner scored on bone; 3 Walker’s Venari Full House.
MPB (6) 1 Wilkinson & Wakeham’s Wakywilks Celestial, rather fell for this delightful nearly 9 months b/t, so neat & sound throughout & held herself together so beautifully for such a youngster, super bone & substance for her size. True front moulded nicely round her correct forechest, excellent front angulation, correct feet, unexaggerated hindquarters, feminine head with oval eyes, moved parallel in both directions & looked the part going round. BP & was a strong contender in the challenge; 2 Jennings’ Jenivon's Lady Lush, such a stylish b/t, elegant head, clean neckline, sound front, plenty of forechest, neat elbows, well ribbed, correct length of loin, moved soundly, didn’t quite retain her topline as well as 1 but she’s only 6 months & should mature very nicely; 3 Hughes & Fairchild’s Phantom Phawn Restinim. PB (4) 1 Small’s Glynlythe's Heirloom for Devondax, 9 months red, won well here, neat feminine red, pretty head, prominent forechest, OK bone, lengthy ribbing, sound hindquarters, moved OK, topline can settle a little more; 2 Kent’s Lokmadi Don't Bring Lulu, attractive 11 months b/t in super coat condition, typical head, reachy neck, well bodied, OK topline, preferred front angulation of 1, moved soundly, not yet quite reach or drive of 1; 3 Johnson’s Ruletadax Destina. JB (11) 1 Melbourne, Paget & Carroll’s Melriding Silver Spangle, such a smart 13 months dapple with plenty of bone & substance, shapely body with lengthy ribbing, plenty of forechest, well moulded front, excellent bone, strode out beautifully with the same outline standing & moving; 2 Hanney-Mitchell’s Bronia Blayze, lovely quality feminine 13 months shaded red of a more compact type, firm elbows, super shoulders, correct front, OK ribbing, sound well angulated hindquarters, moved steadily, close up here, both could well make up; 3 Rudkin’s Dynastydax Pebbles. PGB (10) 1 Beach’s Beachdax Girl Of My Dreams, very typy brindle, super head, clean neck into well laid and angulated shoulders, very good forechest, excellent topline & ribbing, steady rhythmic mover, liked her a lot, perhaps could lose a few ounces, otherwise might have posed more of a threat in the challenge; 2 Lucas’ Carpaccio Red Crystal, quality red of a slightly finer type, so pretty & feminine, lovely size, good forehand, clean outline standing, winner scored slightly going round; 3 Baker & Clements’ Rayol Bohemian Rapsody of Kenraura. LB (11) Another wonderful class with all those placed of CC quality. 1 Melbourne, Paget & Carroll’s Melriding SiSi, beautifully correct b/t with each part fitting together so neatly, lovely size & overall balance, feminine head with excellent expression & powerful jaws, neck flows cleanly into the shoulders & an immaculate topline, enough bone & forechest, matching hindquarters, true both ways & flowed round the ring with her topline never wavering. CC & BOB, good luck for the third; 2 Beach’s Beachdax Sweet Melody JW, slightly bigger most impressive red with one of the best heads of the day, nothing toyish about this one, super scope & outline, beautifully carried arched neck, correct balance of ribbing to loin, made a super picture on the move. RCC; 3 O’Connell’s Rijobeau Rita Bix with Llennocor. OB (8) Another enjoyable class to assess. 1 Williams & Moes’ Ch Cwmdarhian Cold As Ice, such a classy red of super type & outline, feminine head, arrogant expression, nicely arched neck, true front with correct angles, retained her topline on the move, strong contender in the challenge where the winners’ arrogant carriage just had the edge; 2 Roberts & Smith’s Sonorra Ginger Snap for Rayol, stylish feminine red, very typical head & expression, good front construction, level topline, full of quality, winner scored on profile movement; 3 Rudkin’s Ch Dynastydax Alfreda JW. VB (2) 1 Halsall’s Grews Iridessa for Kiddles, low to ground 7 years brindle, typical head, prominent forechest, well ribbed, OK hindquarters, steady mover, topline not quite so firm now but in good nick; 2 Bullingham’s Bowetts Aventurine at Stoweytop, appealing sweet feminine 10 years red of a more compact type, so happy to be in the ring, good bone, scored on topline but a shade wide in front now. Beginners B (8) 1 W Celestial, best beginner & put up a very mature performance in the main ring to take second in what looked like a strong group; 2 R Bohemian Rapsody of K, very nice type b/t, a shapely type with good forechest, bone & substance, feminine head, moved OK, perhaps a shade wide behind; 3 Rose’s Pennydach Mystique at Rosencrantz.
