Thank you to Bath for the invitation to judge at one of my favourite shows of the year, and to the steward who kept the ring running smoothly despite the heat. A final thank you to the exhibitors who entered and showed their dogs under me today.
This was my first time awarding CCs in Miniature Smooths and completing my final variety of Dachshunds at CC level, something for which I am extremely grateful.
Overall, I would say the main issue within the breed is size. These are Miniature Dachshunds and should remain so. The loss of the scales was not an open invitation for larger minis. The issue with size today was mainly evident in the bitch classes. On a positive note, I did not find any dogs loose in elbow, which is something present in the other two miniature varieties. In addition, I found mouths and head shapes overall to be appealing and correct in size. Hind movement and angulation are areas of concern; however, the future looks bright with the youngsters in the breed.
Veteran Dog (2)
1st: BEACH Riowood Arizona
Top-size male who is
still shown in his prime. Good head and eye shape, nice length of neck leading
into good front angulation and pleasing ribbing. Well-muscled behind and powered
around the ring. BVIB.
2nd: POULIER Auradach Alfred the Great
Another well-made male
with a pleasing headpiece and outline. Not the movement of the winner.
Minor Puppy Dog (3,1)
1st: HANNEY-MITCHELL Bronia Despacito
A true Minor Puppy who
I'm sure will have a wonderful show career once he has matured. Good head, mouth
and size, with a firm topline held at all times. Pleasing coming and going; he
is the correct size and shows it can still be done.
2nd: COOTES Kelsomaid Up in Flames
Not as clean as the
winner in movement and again needs time. Masculine head, good eye and ear set.
Firm topline held both standing and on the move.
Puppy Dog (3)
1st: ERGIS Siouxline Trojan – RCC, BPIB
What a handsome chap.
He is appealing to the eye and works well for his handler. A houndy head with
correct bite. Lovely neck leading into correctly placed shoulders, with good
width and length of rib that would still allow him to do a day's work.
Well-angled hind construction and, once settled, he moves with grace. One to
watch. A true miniature.
2nd: KIRKWOOD-EMERY Marvale Royal Salute at Helydon
Another quality puppy
who pushed hard for first. Appealing head, well made throughout and excellently
schooled and handled.
Junior Dog (1)
1st: HISKETT & KELLEWAY Llennocor Stop and Stare with Simorepaw
He stood alone but by
no means did he not deserve his win. Good head and eye, appealing neck and
chest. Firm topline. Would prefer longer ribbing. Well-muscled throughout .
Clean in movement.
Yearling Dog (5,1)
1st: BULLIS Amaffrey Sirius Black
A smart, compact male
who stood out in this class. Good size and shape, of excellent type as expected
from this kennel. Good head, mouth, eye and ear. Boasts a good forechest with
clean shoulders, a strong topline and pleasing rib-to-loin ratio. His movement
is powerful and purposeful.
2nd: PATCH Brogansian Barbarian
Well-proportioned male
with sufficient ground clearance and pleasing overall balance. Attractive
headpiece and moved well in profile, although I would have preferred a little
more precision in front action.
Novice Dog (3)
1st: PATCH Brogansian Barbarian
2nd: WOOD Llansansior
Chervil at Littlecopse
Pleasing head and neck
carried into a good topline. Sound on the move and presented in good condition.
3rd: WOODHOUSE Kenleap Moon Hero
Post Graduate Dog (2)
1st: WOOD Llansansior Chervil at Littlecopse Super head, correct front, holds his outline on the move, strong rear and moved really well. Liked his bone and feet.
2nd: WOODHOUSE Kenleap Moon Hero Good head proportions, strong neck, very good front and super outline when stacked. Not as clean in movement as the winner.
Limit Dog (8,1)
1st: TITE Rijobeau Well I Never – DCC
This boy was just what
I wanted: true to size, true to type and true to construction. He is so pleasing
to watch as he moves around the ring. Correct in front assembly and your hands
just flow over him. Strong hindquarters and correctly muscled throughout. Well
balanced and stylish while remaining true to the breed. A credit to his owner.
2nd: FORGE Normpug Roman Holiday JW
Correctly constructed
dog with a good head and eye shape. Ribbing of good length , not the spring of
winner .A firm topline held on the move handled well . Another of correct size.
3rd: GITTINS Boomerloo's Robin
Open Dog (12,3)
1st: O'CONNELL Ch Rijobeau Rumours With Llennocor JW
Well-balanced dog with
a well-proportioned head carried on an elegant neck flowing smoothly into
correctly placed shoulders and front assembly. Good rib length and strong
outline maintained a firm topline when in motion.
2nd: ANDISON Clentry Tiercel
Quality dog of top
size, well constructed and nicely balanced throughout with correct proportions.
Excellent head properties, featuring a correctly shaped eye and keen expression.
Good forechest, complemented by well-laid shoulders, nicely sprung ribs and a
compact loin.
3rd: WILKINSON & WAKEMAN Bronia Gabriel for Wakywilks JW
Special Beginners (6)
1st: DOWNIE Marvale Kingfisher
Well-balanced exhibit
with a pleasing head and expression, good front assembly and firm topline. Moved
soundly and confidently to take the class.
2nd: GOODALL Stargang Eternal Flame
Feminine bitch of
good type with a pleasing outline and correct proportions. Moved well around the
ring and was shown in good condition.
3rd: BOSWORTH Bronia Solange at Louromi JW
Veteran Bitch (2)
1st: FORGE Normpug Tiger Eye- excellent head and neck, good front and rear angulation. Moved out well showing sound parallel movement with plenty of rear drive.
2nd:ROSE Pennydach Mystique at Rosencrantz Made a lovely picture standing. Pleasing head and neck, although I would have liked more length of rib. Slightly narrow in movement both fore and aft.
Minor Puppy Bitch (5)
1st: BULLIS Amaffret Rita Skeeter- Lovely head and front assembly, with a well-proportioned upper arm. Ribbing longer than that of number 2. Shows excellent movement for such a young pup. BPB
2nd: PARR Stargang Rumba - Slightly plain in head, but with a good length of neck flowing into well-angulated shoulders.
3rd: BOSWORTH Bronia Rihanna at Louromi
Puppy Bitch (5,1)
1st: DALTON Beachdax Angel of my Dreams at Llansansior - A mature puppy who already displays many of the attributes desired in the breed. Smart head and eye, clean front angulation, firm topline, good length and proportion of ribbing, and strong, well-muscled hindquarters.
2nd: ERGIS Siouxline Trinity – What a beautiful head this girl carries. Correct size and full of style, she shares many of the qualities seen throughout her kennel mates. I preferred her size to the winner's today, but she was a little unsettled on the move, which ultimately cost her the class.
3rd: HUDSON Sharnphilly Thumbelina with Mutoko
Junior Bitch (5)
1st: BULLIS Minniewood Waltzing Matilda by Amaffrey
A quality youngster
who caught my eye for her overall balance and breed type. Feminine head with a
kind expression, correct eye shape and good ear placement. Well laid shoulders
and a pleasing forechest. Good length of ribbing and firm topline which she
maintained on the move. Moved soundly both coming and going with good drive from
the rear.
2nd: BEACH Beachdax California Gurls
Another attractive
bitch of good type. Pleasing head and neck flowing into well-placed shoulders.
Good proportions throughout and moved well in profile. Prefered size of winner.
3rd: GRAHAM Portmoll Primadonna
Yearling Bitch (6,1)
1st: DALTON Llansansior Empress
A very smart bitch who
appealed for her construction and outline. Feminine headpiece with correct
dentition and dark eye. Good forehand assembly, strong topline and well-ribbed
body. Moved with purpose and confidence around the ring, showing good reach and
drive. Pushed for the RCC
2nd: PARR Stargang Silk Stockings
Another quality
exhibit with much to like. Correct size and proportions with a pleasing head and
expression. Good neck and shoulder placement. Moved well but lacked the finish
and maturity of the winner.
3rd: BOSWORTH Bronia Solange at Louromi JW
Novice Bitch (3,1)
1st: HUDSON Sharnphilly Thumbelina with Mutoko
Feminine bitch of
correct size and type. Attractive head with a good eye and expression. Nice
front assembly and adequate ribbing. Moved soundly and held a firm topline
throughout.
2nd: WOOD Littlecopse Black Opium
Another pleasing
exhibit who made a lovely outline standing. Good head and neck, with a
well-muscled rear. Would prefer a little more precision in front movement.
Post Graduate Bitch (7,3)
1st: WILKINSON & WAKEMAN Wakywilks Vitoria – RCC
A quality bitch of
excellent type and construction who appealed greatly for her balance and overall
soundness. Feminine head with correct proportions, dark eye and keen expression.
Well-laid shoulders with a good forechest, strong topline and well-ribbed body.
Correctly angulated behind and shown in hard condition. Moved soundly in all
directions, maintaining her outline at all times. A worthy RCC winner.
2nd: BUTTERSTONE Joshotto Martha Gunn
A feminine bitch with
a pleasing outline and good breed type. Correct front assembly and adequate hind
angulation. Moved well in profile but not quite the drive of the winner.
3rd: GOODALL Stargang Eternal Flame
Limit Bitch (9)
1st: BEACH Beachdax Girl of my Dreams JW – BCC & BOB
A bitch who impressed
me from the moment she entered the ring. True to size and full of breed type,
she presents a beautiful overall picture. Feminine head with excellent eye shape
and expression, carried on a well-arched neck flowing into correctly placed
shoulders. Good forechest, excellent length of ribbing and a strong topline
maintained both standing and on the move. Well-muscled hindquarters with correct
angulation allowed her to move with purpose, drive and complete soundness.
Balanced throughout and presented in excellent condition. I was delighted to
award her the BCC and ultimately Best of Breed. Congrats on the group short
list.
2nd: ERGIS Siouxline Elsa Marie JW

of good type. Correct size with a pleasing head and expression. Good neck and
shoulder placement, firm topline and sound movement.
