Thank you to the committee for the invitation to judge miniature smooth haired Dachshunds, which were my first variety in the breed 23 years ago. The hospitality of the committee was second to none and I felt extremely welcomed in Scotland. Also a kind thank you to my excellent steward who was very efficient and everyone who entered under me during the current fuel price hikes as I know it was a considerable journey for many. This was reflected in the entry which was below average compared to most championship shows and made some decisions difficult.
I was very pleased with my main winners, any of which I would of taken home, which is the highest compliment in my opinion. I was disappointed with some classes and unfortunately had to withhold in a class, which is never something one wants to do but the future of the breed is my priority. I was looking for a functional hound with breed type, a correct bite, 25% ground clearance, outgoing temperament and sound movement. Most exhibits were shown in excellent condition with clean teeth and short nails but a fair amount need better muscle tone, a small minority were overweight and one I would consider underweight. Some mouths were sadly overshot or had inverted canines and therefore not fit for function and penalised. I checked ground clearance on every exhibit and some were too low for the standard and it reflected in their movement and is something we must breed away from, especially in the current climate. Size was generally good with some creeping up but I took overall balance and sound movement as a priority in my decisions. The floor was slippy and had wooden panels which caught some exhibits off guard but I naturally took this into consideration when making decisions.
Puppy D (5)
1st Bronia Despacito (Mrs F Hanney-Mitchell). Raw 7 month old s/r of correct size and lots of breed type. He stood out in the class for balance and correct front and rear angulation. Great conical head with pleasing almond eye. Correct scissor bite. Good reach of neck into best shoulders and front construction of class. Good depth of chest for age with enough ground clearance. Excellent strong feet, which stood out and lacked in other exhibits. Excellent ribbing and short loin which maintained topline stacked and on the move. Good bend of stifle to balance front angulation and enough width behind. Moved true coming and going and had excellent reach and drive in side gait with correct tail carriage. As I went up the classes, no other dog compared with his construction albeit he is raw and I assume it was his first show. He moved very well in his class but was a little unsettled in the challenge, however I couldn’t deny him the CC and will watch his career with interest. DCC and BPD.
2nd Jenivons The Story Lives On (Mrs J Jennings). 6 month old s/r in excellent condition. Excellent head proportions and eye with correct scissor bite. Higher on leg than 1 and just needs to fill out in time. Good layback of shoulder and correct length of upper arm. Preferred feet of 1. Good length of ribbing and kept his topline on move and stacked. Correct bend of stifle behind to balance with front. Moved well in side gait with balance and correct tail carriage. Slightly narrow coming but this should change once chest develops and good parallel movement behind which lacked in other exhibits. Promising youngster.
Graduate D (1)
1st Metadale Secret Alliance (Mrs S J Metcalfe-Bilgin). 22 month old s/r of good size but prefer slightly more muscle tone. Good head proportions and eye. Good reach of neck into correct shoulders but shorter in upper arm which reflected in his front movement. He was too low to ground for me and again this reflected in his movement. Ribbing was good and he maintained his topline well on the move. Rear angulation ok. Lacked reach and drive on move but was parallel coming and going.
Post Graduate D (1)
1st Stargang Jim Beam (Miss L Andison). 2 year old s/r of good size and condition. Correct outline on the table with enough ground clearance. Pleasing conical head with correct almond eye. Good layback of shoulder and depth of chest. Tight large feet. Great ribbing and short loin. Good bend of stifle to balance with front. Took a while to settle on move and struggled with the floor, would prefer a bit more reach in front but carried solid top line and correct tail carriage.
Limit D (5)
1st Jenivon's Starfinch (Mrs J Jennings). 2 year old b/t up to size in excellent muscle tone. Very balanced outline who was moderate with ideal ground clearance. Great head with correct proportions, correct eye and scissor bite. Correct layback of shoulder and length of upper arm. Good ribbing and short loin which maintained top line on move. Balanced rear angulation and correct tail set and carriage. Moved soundly in all directions with plenty of purpose which secured his RCC over Ch from open class. RCC.
2nd Boomerloo’s Robin (Mrs T M Gittins). 3 year old b/t of ideal size and good ground clearance. Another moderate dog who appealed for breed type. Great head proportions but prefer more almond eye. Correct scissor bite. Good layback of shoulder and correct upper arm. Preferred ribbing of 1. Good bend of stifle behind. Moved with balanced side gait and correct tail carriage and held top line on move.
Open D (6)
1st Ch Teckeltown Suspicious Mind (Miss A Mason). 2 year old b/t with great breed type and outline but up to size. Good ground clearance. Best head in the class with correct almond eye and scissor bite. Good length of neck into correct layback of shoulder and length of upper arm. Great forechest with ideal 25% ground clearance. Prefer better feet if I’m critical. Excellent ribbing and short loin, which maintained solid top line stacked and on move. Great bend of stifle behind which balanced him. Struggled a bit with the floor but parallel coming and going. A worthy champion with lots of positive attributes and considered for RCC.
2nd Ch Rijobeau Rumours with Llennocor JW (Mr R & Mrs A O’connell). 3 yr old b/t in excellent condition and great outline. Another worthy champion but I would prefer slightly more bone. Good head with correct almond eye but prefer less stop. Excellent front construction and ideal ground clearance with decent forechest. Excellent ribbing and short loin and good hindquarters with ideal muscle tone. Unfortunately he was struggling on the floor and didn’t settle on the move and gave his handler a difficult time. I am sure could swap places with 1 on many occasions.
Special Beginners D (1)
1st Shantallah Bailey (Miss E Stuart). 6 month red of good size and breed type. Pleasing head proportions with correct eye and scissor bite. Good length of neck into good shoulders but slightly shorter in upper arm which restricted movement. Shorter in ribbing and ok topline. Good rear angulation with correct length of hock. Moved positively for young handler with great rapport.
Puppy B (7,2)
1st Bronia Lady Gaga (Mrs F Hanney-Mitchell). Raw 7 month old s/r litter sister to DCC. A lot of comments apply here too. Ideal size and lots of breed type. Pleasing head proportions with correct eye and scissor bite. Super front construction, tight elbows and strong large feet. Great length of ribbing and short loin. Solid topline stacked and on move. Another with super parallel movement and plenty of reach and drive. A bright future I am sure. Could not be denied the RCC.
2nd Jenivon Jewel at Wenichones (Mrs D & Mr L & Mr M Bain). 11 month old b/t up to size. Unfortunate to meet 1. Great condition and enough ground clearance. Good head proportions and eye shape with correct scissor bite. Decent shoulder placement and length of upper arm. Preferred feet of 1. Good ribbing but slightly longer in loin. Good bend of stifle but slightly longer in hock. Moved positively for owner with correct width behind and parallel in front.
Junior B (7,2)
1st Teckeltowns Power of Love (Miss A Mason). 11.5 month old b/t up to size but super breed type and outline that immediately caught the eye. In gleaming condition and muscle tone for age. Super head and almond eye with correct scissor bite. Good reach of neck into best front construction of the class. Good forechest with ideal depth and 25% ground clearance. Excellent ribbing and short in loin with ideal top line. Excellent rear angulation which balanced with front and correct length of hock. Super reach and drive in side gait and very true coming and going. Could not be denied the CC on complete soundness, balance and breed type. In BOB challenge, she moved round the ring with purpose and maturity for her age. CC and BOB. BPIB. I am sure a bright future.
2nd Marvale Golden Oriole for Devondax JW (Miss Kj Small). 15 month old s/r of good size and breed type. Pleasing balanced outline but prefer slightly more ground clearance. Good head proportions with correct eye and scissor bite. Well laid back shoulders, correct upper arm and tight elbows. Good feet. Ideal length of ribbing and short loin. Prefer slightly more bend of stifle behind but moved positively for owner. Balanced side gait with correct tail carriage. True coming and going with ideal width behind. Unfortunate to meet 1 on this occasion.
Novice B (3)
Unfortunately I had to withhold on two exhibits in this class and explained this to their handlers. One exhibit displayed temperament unsuitable for the breed and another exhibit was unsound on the move so I made the difficult decision to withhold.
1st Bronia’s Annetta at Lowoods (Miss Barr). 2 year old s/r of great size and breed type. Correct head proportions with pleasing eye and expression. Correct scissor bite. Good reach of neck into correct layback of shoulder and good depth of chest and tight elbows. Ok for ribbing and rear angulation balanced with front. Held top line on move and moved soundly for handler, true coming and going. BSB.
Graduate B (1)
1st Marvale’s Austerlitz at Lowoods (Miss Barr). 4 year old red of good size but prefer more muscle tone. Good head with correct eye and scissor bite. Moderate reach of neck and good layback of shoulder but shorter in upper arm. Good ground clearance and correct feet. Prefer more length of ribbing. Ok top line but good bend of stifle and correct tail set. Slightly narrow in front movement and prefer a bit more drive behind.
Post Graduate B (2)
1st Atikan Give Them Merry Hell (Mrs N & Mr K O’hare Wilson & Wilson). 18 month old red of good size and in great condition. Pleasing head proportions with correct eye and scissor bite. Good reach of neck into well placed shoulders and ideal length of upper arm. Tight elbows and good large feet. Enough ground clearance. Ok ribbing with solid top line stacked and on move. Good bend of stifle to balance with front angulation. A little narrow behind on move but better in side gait.
2nd Clentry Rewrite The Stars at Wenichones (Mrs D & Mr L & Mr M Bain). 5 year old b/t up to size with decent head but more round eye than prefer. Preferred front construction and feet of 1. Ok for ribbing and carried top line better on move than stacked. Good bend of stifle but slightly longer in hock. Moved positively for owner with good side gait but narrow behind.
Limit B (5)
1st Metadale Legacy of Love (Mrs S J Metcalfe-Bilgin). 21 month old s/r of good size and breed type. Correct head proportions with pleasing eye and correct scissor bite. Good layback of shoulder with plenty of forechest and enough ground clearance. Tight elbows and best feet of class. Ribbing ok and longer in loin. Good bend of stifle behind and was the most sound mover in the class. Good balanced side gait with correct tail carriage.
2nd Clentry Bumblebee at Wenichones (Mrs D & Mr L & Mr M Bain). 20 month old s/r of good size and type as well. Her head was a little too masculine for me. Good front angulation and ground clearance but prefer less wrinkle on forearm. Ok for ribbing and carried solid topline on move. Good bend of stifle behind and moved true coming and going. Preferred overall balance and head of 1.
Open B (7, 3)
1st Teckeltown The Show Girl (Miss A Mason). 2 year old s/r with great outline and ground clearance and lots of breed type. She won the class easily. Excellent head proportions and almond eye. Correct scissor bite. Good front angulation with tight elbows. Decent ribbing but prefer shorter in loin. Good bend of stifle behind but slightly longer in hock. Excellent reach and drive in side gait but a bit narrow behind for me.
2nd Bronia Camille (Mr R Graham). 3 year old red carrying too much weight for me. Decent head and eye shape with correct scissor bite. Good layback of shoulder but prefer longer upper arm. Not enough ground clearance. Ok for ribbing and held topline on move. Good bend of stifle behind and parallel coming and going. Preferred overall outline and balance of 1 who was more fit for function.
Special Beginner B (6,3)
1st Bronia’s Annetta at Lowoods (Miss Barr). See NB critique.
2nd Bronia Solange at Louromi JW (Mrs L Bosworth). 17 month old s/r of good size and type. Pleasing head but prefer more almond eye. Correct scissor bite. Good front construction and large feet. Decent ribbing and good bend of stifle behind. Moved soundly in all directions but proud of her tail at times.
