I would like to thank the committee of WELKS for inviting me to judge at their
excellent Championship Show again. It is a pleasure to judge in such pleasant
surroundings and at such a well run show. I would like to thank my stewards, Liz
and Ian, for keeping my ring running smoothly, allowing me to focus on the dogs
to be judged. Thank you also to the exhibitors who accepted my judgements with
good grace. I was pleased with the overall quality of the dogs that came under
me. Most had good clean teeth but a few of you need to improve in that area.
There is also no excuse for over long nails either, and a good number of
exhibits had issues in this area. In a good number of cases, elbows were not
tight. Good, hard exercise can help improve this so please do not neglect the
road work. Please be mindful of forechest when breeding. The standard calls for
a 'prominent forechest that allows a depression to form on either side'. In
several, this was not evident. The heads of some dogs were an issue for me. They
were more like a Lancashire Heeler than what a Dachshund should be, not that
smooth conical shape the breed standard asks for, and in several cases, far too
much stop. This was a shame as many had excellent construction elsewhere. Tails
were excellent in all cases. I was disappointed, again, to find so many of you
baiting while on the table and stacked on the floor. It was very noticeable that
none of my top winners felt the need to do this, thus ensuring that their dogs
stood 4 square on the table and floor, presenting a correct outline. Movement
was overall good on grass, with most driving out correctly while maintaining a
good topline, although there were a number tummy tapping and not showing me a
clean set of pads as they moved away. Finally, if a judge asks you to do an out
and back, it means they want to observe the straightness of movement from behind
and in front. This is not easy to do when exhibitors can not move their dogs in
straight lines. You need to be aware of where the judge is so you can perform
the movement correctly. It is basic good ring craft to show off your dog. It was
such a pleasure to see my top placings able to do this so I got a true picture
of movement and, thus, structure on the move. MPD (3) 1 Siouxline Trojan (Ergis).
At just 6 months old, this shaded red dog gave me all that I am looking for in a
Dachshund. A correct shaped conical head, excellent ear set and eye shape and
position. Set on a muscular neck down into well laidback shoulders. Front and
rear construction was spot on as was ribbing and distance over the loin. Despite
being on grass, he moved with drive, maintaining a level topline a super outline
at all times. BPD. 2 Jenivons The Story Lives On (Jennings).7th month red dog,
also of a very high quality. Correct head shape with almond shaped eyes and
correct ear placement. Good, muscular neck into correct shoulder placement with
excellent front and rear angulation. For me, just a touch too long over the loin
at present but he has a lot of maturing still to do. A level topline while
moving but just not quite that of the class winner. I am sure he will have a
bright future. PD (2,1) 1 Marvale Royal Salute at Helydon (Kirkwood-Emery).11
month Black/tan dog. A soundly constructed dog with a correct head set on the
muscular neck into well laid back shoulders with correct front construction.
Rear angulation was also correct. He maintained a level topline on the move but
was inconsistent in movement today, which was a shame. YD (3,1) 1 Stargang Jim
Beam (Andison) 23mnth old red dog. A great example of the dogs from this
wellknown kennel. His conical head was spot on as were the eye shape and ear
set. Good, muscular neck into well laid back shoulders and spot on front
construction and forechest. Very sound ribbing and length of loin into rear
angles that allowed positive movement that was straight both coming and going.
Real drive and a level topline at all times. 2 Stargang Rusty Nail (Parr).
Litter brother of the winner so many of the above comments apply to this exhibit
as well. He was just out moved by his brother today but still maintained a level
topline and straightness. PGD (1) 1 Swingletrees Harlequin by Lindella's
(Hughes) 17 month Black/tan dog. His front construction was very good with a
very good forechest. For me, his head was a touch short in the muzzle, which
spoilt the overall appearance. His movement was spot on, with a good level
topline and very good drive. LD (8) 1 Kleinstar Moongazer (Reynolds) 2 ½ yr red
dog. This was a fabulous class to judge as it made me really think about what I
was looking for. This young man was class throughout. Beautiful conical head set
on the correct muscular neck into spot on front construction and forechest. Well
ribbed up with a short loin and correct rear angulation. He used all this to
really drive around the ring, all the while maintaining that level topline I
wanted and showing me a clean pair of heels as he did so. Pleased to award him
RCC. 2 Jenivon's Starfinch (Jennings). A similar aged dog to the winner.
Black/tan. Another with a correct head shape and construction throughout.
Excellent forechest, sound ribbing and loin length. Good angulation front and
rear that allowed real drive and a level topline on the move. I was nit picking
here, as I was all the way down the line. Winner just shaded it on movement
today. OD (9,2) 1 Bronia's Armand at Cazdachs (Strange) 3 1/2yr red dog. Here
was all I was looking for. So masculine with a look at me attitude. There was no
need to bait as he wanted to show himself off. Everything was as it should be.
Fantastic construction from his head all the way to the tip of his tail. His
movement was powerful and fluent which left me in no doubt that he was spot on
in his construction. It was a pleasure to go over a dog of such quality and
award him his first CC. I hope others will appreciate his quality and his
championship comes soon. CC and then pleased to award him BOB. 2 Clentry Tiercel
(Andison). 20 month Black/tan dog. Good head, correctly shaped with well plaved
ears and almond shaped eyes. Set on muscular neck into well laid back shoulders
and correct front angulation. Strong back and level topline at all times into
good rear angulation. Drove out well but just out moved by the winner today. VB
(4,1) 1 Grews Iridessa for Kiddles (Halsall). 8 ½ brindle bitch. Despite being a
veteran, this little bitch showed great movement, really driving around the ring
while maintaining the level topline I was wanting. Well constructed at the front
and rear, her head was correct and it was pleasing to see clean teeth BV. 2 Ch
Sundsdal's Black Cadillac to D'arisca (Coxon). 7 ½ Blk/tan. A very elegant dog,
correct head, neck and front construction. Moved well with drive from good rear
angles. Very feminine which some bitches weren't. Just out moved by the winner
today. MPB (6,2) 1 Siouxline Trinity (Ergis). 6 mnth Rd Brindle. Litter sister
to BPD. All the same comments apply but she was very feminine and elegant.
Lovely topline as she moved and the same excellent construction as her brother.
This is what comes of careful breeding. 2 Bronia Rihanna at Louromi (Bosworth).
7mnth Red. Another excellent puppy to go over, showing that there is quality
coming through. Lovely conical head on an elegant neck into correct front and
rear construction, allowing a level topline to be achieved but not consistently
as just not quite settled the whole time she was moving. Crack this and her time
will come. PB (8,3) 1 Teckeltowns Power of Love (Mason). There are times as a
judge when a dog just fills your eye and then does not disappoint when you go
over them. This little lady was just such a case. Beautiful conical head, with
correctly placed almond eyes and ear set, on an elegant neck into super front
construction. Good forechest and ground clearance. Rear angulation alloed great
drive on the move, covering the ground comfortably, maintaining a level topline.
I was pleased to award her BPB and in the challenge, BPIB. I am sure she will go
on to great success. 2 Teckeltowns Kelby Springs Into Collidach (Hutchings).
11mnth red. When you get a class full of quality, many may think it is a
nightmare. It is actually a real pleasure and drives me to really think hard
about what I want in my placings. This young lady could swap places with the
winner on another day and much of the above applies to her as well. Today, my
winner just edged it on movement but I will be interested to judge them at a
future date when they have matured. JB (7,3) 1 Portmoll Primadonna (Graham).15
mnth red. Correct conical head with perfect eye shape and ear set. Lovely front
and rear construction with excellent forechest and ribbing. Really covered the
ground on the move with a level topline as she moved. I will watch her
development with interest. 2 Jenivon's Secret Wish (Jennings). 14 mnth Blk/Tan.
Again, very correct construction in most parts but I was looking for more
forechest to complete the picture. I hope this will come as she matures.
Movement was, again, very good, being straight as she moved away and toward me.
YB (8,3) 1 Jenivon's Spicebomb (Jennings). 14 mnth red. Litter sister to 2nd in
the Junior class. Construction was, for me, slightly better on her (more
forechest) from her well shaped head down through the front angles and into the
ribbing and rear angulation. A level topline at all times and super drive on the
move. 2 Bronia Solange at Louromi JW (Bosworth). 18 mnth Shd red. The quality
just kept coming. Another super, well constructed bitch throughout. She was
shaded by the slightly better movement of my winner today. NB (4) 1 Teckeltowns
Kelby Springs Into Collidach (Hutchings). See Puppy Bitch. 2 Mulberryisle Lovely
Annie for Preziosa (Ratsey-Woodroffe & Rippon). 3 ½ Yr red. Correct conical head
with well placed eyes and ears. Elegant neck and good front and rear angles.
Movement was good but not quite as good as the class winner. Level topline
throughout. PGB (6,1) 1 Joshotto Martha Gunn (Butterstone). 2 ½ yr Blk/Tan.
Super correct head on an elegant neck. Spot on front and rear angulation coupled
with tight elbows and good forechest. Very good drive on the move, while
maintaining a level topline. Pleasure to go over. 2 Normpug Apricot Beauty
(Forge). 4 yr red. Despite not quite moving as well as my class winner, this was
a super little bitch to go over with everything in the right place and super
angles front and rear. She kept her topline, showing good drive as she moved
around the ring. LB (9) 1 Siouxline Elsa Marie JW (Ergis). 20 Mnth Blk/Tan. This
was a tough class to sort out with good depth in quality, topped by this
excellent young lady. There was really nothing to fault. Correct head, elegant
neck, spot on front and rear angulation. Her elbows were tight, her topline
level at all times and her forechest correct. She drove with power around the
ring (not always easy when you are so close to the ground on grass) showing
clean pads as she moved away from me. So please to award her BCC. 2 Marvale
Crimson Sunbird at Teckeltown (Mason). 2 ½ yr red. This little lady ticked all
the boxes for me. Correct in all ways with a classic outline and movement. I was
splitting hairs here but the movement of the winner just shaded it today but I
am sure there will be top awards coming her way soon. OB (7,2) 1 Gellijams
Fireworks at Cwmdarhian (Beer & William & Moes). 3yr Dk Shd red. So feminine and
elegant. Correct head and tight elbows. Spot on front and rear angles. Moved
with drive, maintaining that level topline and was looking for. Good ribbing and
correct length of loin. Pleased to award her RBCC. 2 Melriding Silver Spangle
(Kirkwood-Emery). 2 ½ silver dapple. So very feminine and elegant. Soundly
constructed with correct front and rear angulation that allowed her to move with
power around the ring. Splitting hairs, she was a shade long over the loin for
me but her topline was always level as she stood and moved.
