MINIATURE LONG HAIRED

Having heard some rather negative comments about this breed over recent months I approached this appointment with some trepidation. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. A good number weighed in around the ideal weight of 10 pounds, which is clear proof that it is perfectly possible to breed to the Standard. Of those nearer the desired maximum weight of 11 pounds there were none that I could criticise for being thin. My main criticism is that too many are presented in soft condition and would clearly benefit from good, regular exercise to build muscle. Overall, I believe the quality of MLHDs has improved since I last judged them in 2005. There were fewer excessively crooked fronts and less evidence of tummy-tapping hind movement. Some breeders still seem to be prioritising coat and colour over construction and movement, and my winners were those I felt looked like hounds that could cover the ground effortlessly. A few were rather nervous and were penalised accordingly. I only found one with a poor mouth, having uneven lower canines.

MPD
(5,1) 1 Palin’s Sanmik Pikcard Promising B/T of 8 months. Tidy front, with good length of upper arm. Good overall balance. Lovely topline when stood, but a little unsettled on the move sometimes. Well ribbed up, but would prefer keel running a bit further back. Very true hind movement going away from me. 2 Connew’s Fenellafleur Elvis Dark Chocolate of just 6 months. Different type to 1; taller, better length of neck but with more length of leg, yet still presenting a balanced enough profile. Not quite the front construction of 1 but still preferred his over that of 3 which was rather more upright in shoulder. Ribs extend well back and he has a tidy underline, not cut up. His length of leg enabled him to step out well and cover the ground. Certainly one of the better movers in this class. 3 Burge and Rossiter’s Willowheath Silver Moods At Creekpit.

PD
(3,1) 1 Graham Jadag Fornton's Caramel Lovely 10 month Chocolate and Tan. Has good forechest and a front construction with tightly-fitting elbows. As with many here, could perhaps do with more length of keel. Well-angulated behind. Very true front movement coming toward me and keeps a lovely topline in profile movement which put him ahead of 2. 2 Cooper’s Jealroie Sir Percival At Jumanda Red dog who was shorter in the body than 1 and not as neatly fitting elbows/front construction. Good amount of forechest. Well angulated behind which showed up with true, parallel movement going away.

JD
(6,1) 1: Coad & Blackburn-Bennett Abydachs Amos An interesting little B/T dog who really caught my eye because he really stepped out so well around the ring. More compact than many, yet still with a balanced feel as he has such an elegant length of neck and proud head carriage. Slightly more crook than I like coming towards me, but good length of upper arm and tight-fitting elbows. Used his hind angulation to drive out well. Res. Dog CC and I was interested to see he is a full brother to my BOB. 2 Poole’s Findowrie City Slicker Lower to ground type than 1. Would prefer slightly more length of neck. Very true front movement coming towards me and parallel moving away. Good length of ribbing and tidy underline. More positive on the move than 3 Roberts Denver Dream Lover

PGD (4) 1 Brooks’ Layways Piper For Lyndarlea JW Lovely cream with good bone and substance, presented in great condition. Good forechest. Would prefer tighter-fitting elbows. Reasonable length of neck. Tended to move a bit close behind going away from me. Easily the best topline in this class which he held at all times on the move. In profile movement he impressed. 2 : Richardson’s Sirrondach Ebony Damon Hill B/T dog with not quite the quality of front construction as 1, although he does have a good amount of forechest. Very good topline when on the move which put him ahead of 3. Well ribbed-up and tidy underline. 3 Duchesne Scandell's September Gold.

LD (10,1) 1 Young’s Willowheath Hendrix This handsome 2 year old B/T dog holds a good topline in profile movement and covers the ground well. Would prefer more length of neck which would enhance his overall profile and balance. Good forechest and overall front construction. Good turn of stifle and he goes very true when moving away. 2 Richardson’s Sirrondach Ayrton Senna Chocolate and Tan who looked better moving than when stacked. Taller type than 1, with more length of leg and not the shoulder/elbow placement. Good amount of forechest. Needs more length of neck and was a bit more tucked up in underline than I prefer. More parallel in front coming towards me, which I preferred over 3. 3 Farmer’s Jenwood Shady Spot.

OD
(4 ) 1 Brooks’ Ch Lyndarlea Choc Ice Very impressive 5 year old Chocolate and Tan dog whose movement set him part from many others here today. Holds an excellent topline on the move. Good length of neck running into well-placed shoulders. Sufficient ground clearance to enable him to move freely. Nicely angulated behind. A very balanced picture overall. Dog CC. 2 Lockett-Walters, Lockett-Walters Metadale Dick Turpin A true Dachshund. in miniature and superb proof at well under 10 pounds that top quality is achievable at the lower end of the size scale. On the table I thought he would be my winner. Lovely to go over; everything fits neatly and beautifully angulated at both ends. Super topline. Very disappointing that he was unsettled on the move and didn’t give of his best. 3 Poole’s Findowrie Skye Lord

MPB
(8,1) 1 Young’s Willowheath Frosting Angel Beautiful Silver Dapple of 8 months. Well constructed in front. Better length of neck than many. Good length of ribbing and neat underline. Super topline, held at all times. Well-angulated behind. Moved true both coming and going. 2 Oxley’s Dinkidax Dollipop Slightly shorter bodied B/T bitch who moved out really freely which put her above 3, but who was rather loose in elbow compared with 1. Another with a good topline, held on the move. Tidy underline, not cut up. Used her good hind angulation to help step out with drive. 3 Elworthy Shenaligh Mignonette

PB
(10,1) 1 Norton’s Halunke's Gabriella Just loved this little red bitch. Nothing exaggerated and she took my eye both when she was on the move and when standing. Enough reach of neck to give her elegance and balance. Lovely front construction with well-placed shoulders and length of upper arm. Good forechest. Very neat, flowing underline. The right amount of coat. Stepped out with confidence and drive around the ring. Best Puppy. 2 Robert’s Denver Sugar Babe Another lovely bitch with rather more coat than 1 and perhaps slightly shorter in body. Excellent dark eye and pigment on this cream. Good forechest. Very well constructed in front, with good shoulders and tightly-fitting elbows. Moved with more confidence and drive than 3. 3 Thomas’ Shenaligh Sweet Surprise

JB
(13) 1 Geeson’s Abydachs Absolution JW This was a strong class. Beautifully proportioned B/T bitch of 17 months. Good reach of neck running into well-placed shoulders and tight-fitting elbows. Not excessively long. Good ground clearance which enables her to cover the ground very freely. Moves true in both directions. Holds her topline so well when on the move. Bitch CC and BOB. Discovered afterwards that this was her fourth CC. 2 Turner’s Rafthouse Eternity Slightly longer in the body than 1 and a bit more upright in shoulder, but nevertheless a quality bitch. Another who moved so freely, with the right amount of ground clearance which just gave her the edge over 3. Good forechest. True coming and going. 3 Lockett-Walters Ralines Aubra Jean

PGB
(10) 1 Welton’s Chelane Pure Magic Another class with some quality bitches (perhaps surprisingly for Post-Grad). I was impressed by the way this B/T bitch stepped out round the ring. Nicely put together in front and well-angulated behind; both of which contributed to her quality of movement. Not excessively coated. 2 Palin’s Sanmik Belhanna B/T bitch of a heavier build than 1 which meant she didn’t appear as elegant, stood, or when moving. Also, a bit more upright in shoulder than 1. Nevertheless, she did step out well and covered the ground with drive. Her confidence on the move put her just ahead of 3. 3 Graham’s Hillstar Lexzina Of Jadag

LB
(10,2)1 Palin’s Sanmik Kess Attractive cream who moved well and carried a good topline on the move. A good size. Perhaps a bit lacking in ground clearance for my liking and I’d prefer to see more length of neck just to add a touch of elegance. Good amount of forechest and tight-fitting elbows. Well-angulated behind. 2 Poole’s Findowrie Wine N Roses B/T bitch who was rather more upright in shoulder than 1. Good forechest. Held a firm topline which put her ahead of 3. Tidy underline; also neater than 3. Looked better on the move than stood. 3 Cooper’s Jumandas Gypsy Silver.

OB
(10,1) 1 Holmes’ Ch. Tammera Touch Of Elegance Another strong class to end my day and give me confidence in the improving quality of this breed. The free movement of this top quality red bitch was a pleasure to watch, particularly in profile. Very well-balanced overall. Excellent front and well-angulated behind. Preferred her elegant head to 2. Res. Bitch CC. 2 Roberts’ Ch Denver Suzi Wong Slightly lower to ground type than 1, but she moves well and certainly can cover the ground effectively. Lovely front construction with good forechest, well laid back shoulders and with tight-fitting elbows. True movement coming and going. Another bitch of high quality. 3 Burge and Rossiter’s Rafthouse Rainbows End Of Creekpit Sh.CM.

VB (3,1)1 Shutt’s Jadag Kadbry Rose Of Donnadoon Chocolate Dapple who is still looking good at nearly eight years. Slightly taller type with good ground clearance. Good forechest and tightly fitting elbows. Good shaped head. Topline held on the move which put her ahead of 2. 2 McCarthy’s Nagshall Cream Toffee Another taller type with not the front construction, having looser elbows, and less hind angulation than 1. Good forechest. Looking really good for 10 years old and clearly enjoying her day out.
