It has been a while since I have judged this breed and I was delighted with the improvements. The backs were strong and the long loins were reduced to a few exhibits. Seeing these dogs bred by responsible breeders was a delight. My son who is the main Dachshund fanatic in the family is always having to take in rescues from RSPCA. I do hope the day will come when there are none available. They are lovely dogs, but people forget they are hounds with strong jaws and domestic deafness when it comes to rabbits.
PD (2) 1 Larkin’s Larkhund Rocketman – Res CC – Most attractive youngster, with conical skull tapering to the tip of his nose. Nothing coarse or cloddy about this puppy. Well proportioned with occiput to top, to tip of nose equal in length. Strength in jaw and good dentition. Eyes lovely and dark, almond shaped and obliquely set. Nice high set ears, with rounded tips just touching cheeks. Neck long, slightly arched and of good length, fitted well into shoulders. Shoulder blades were long. Breast bone strong and prominent, enough that it it showed a depression on either side of it. Rear quarters had thigh set at right angles to pelvis, lower thigh set right angle to upper thigh and were well rounded. Front feet very slightly turned out, and were bigger than rear feet. Pads thick and firm. Tail well placed and had good furnishings. On the move, stride was long and free flowing with plenty of drive from the super rear quarters. Coat soft and straight, longest behind legs where he had good feathering. I would have loved to have tucked this dog into my bag and taken him home. 2 McSorley’s Barlaine Midnight Charmer Black/tan, this youngster needs to go to some training as he was so nervous and tense. Good head and expression, and well placed ears. Neck of good length, and well angulated shoulders. Correctly angulated front and rear, but rather flat footed. Some road walking would improve enormously here. Movement difficult to assess, as his body was so tense and he kept looking to see where I was. With some showmanship would give you some fun in the ring.
PGD (1) 1 Drady’s Tolberg Black Adder At Indiko Black/tan, well marked, with a nicely proportioned head. High set ears framing an attractive head with good muzzle length. Eyes almond shaped and obliquely set and good dentition. Good length to neck which had a good slight arch, and ran into shoulders to give proud head carriage. Shoulder blades long and correctly placed, upper arm same length same length as shoulder blade and well set. Forearm short and strong and covered lowest part of keel. Just a touch long in loin, but topline excellent. Croup long, and gently sloped to tail. Pelvis of good length, upper thigh set at right angles to it, lower thigh set at right angles to upper thigh and had good muscle tone. Angulation in rear was correct, allowing plenty of drive. Good feet with thick firm pads. Movement was free and stride long. Excellent coat, being soft and straight. Nice quality dog that had a free flowing movement.
OD (3) 1 Weston & Johnson’s Ecotyne Devil’s Advocate Beautiful black/tan dog, with excellent head properties and ear placement. Nice reach of neck with slight arch that fitted well into shoulders. Shoulder blades long and placed firmly against robust rib cage at desired 45 degree angle. Upper arm same length as the shoulder blade and was close to rib. Breast bone strong, and created the correct depression on either side of it. Forearm short and strong and covered lowest part of keel. Would not want this dog any longer. Back level, with slight arch over loin. Croup had length and sloped slightly towards tail. Strong firm hind quarters, with upper thigh at right angle to pelvis. Angulation good at rear, and proverbial pencil could have easily been set across thigh. Realy showed his virtues on the move, as his long stride was long and flowing, with plenty of drive form rear. Delighted to have awarded him the CC. 2 Geeson’s Abydachs Alpha Centauri Another black/tan, this time the tan was paler. Loved his head and expression, but eyes an little too round and not so obliquely set. Skull proportion excellent as skull/stop/nose were of correct equal length. Ears nicely set and jaws strong. Would have liked a tad more length to neck, but loved his forechest and his 45 degree angulated shoulders. Loin was a little on the long side, giving a little weakness to back. Tail well set and nicely feathered. Moved purposely around the ring with plenty of drive. 3 Irvine’s Bronia The Dutchman.
PB (5) 1 Larkin’s Larkhund All That Jazz What a beautifully balanced bitch, with correct proportions, especially loin so was able to produce the required point of shoulder to point of buttock was equal to height at withers. Not many I could say this about today. Attractive head, with equal occiput/nose proportions. Dark almond eye obliquely set. Ears set high. Strong punishing jaw. Super length to neck, which fitted well into shoulders, which were strong and long. Upper arm slightly less than length of shoulder. Forelegs straight and parallel. Elbows were tucked in, pasterns strong and slightly sloping. This bitch had super feet which were strong and well knuckled and oval in shape. Body shape from point of shoulder to point of buttock equalled height at withers. Excellent topline, with croup sloping steeply to root of tail. Elbows tight, correct rib length, slightly sprung. Underlined has desired slight rise and loin strong. Moderate bend to stifle, upper thigh had flat muscle, and legs were parallel when viewed from rear. Super strong well knuckled slightly oval feet. Excellent mover, slightly springing trot and drive from rear. It was a difficult to decide between these two puppies, but this bitch had the slight edge in the end. BPIB 2 McSorley‘s Barlaine Golden Honey Well proportioned head, with the most pleasing expression. Eyes could be more obliquely set. Ears well set, and had sufficient length to neck. Good length to shoulder blades, and were of the correct angle. A little short in upper arm, but reasonably well placed and was close to ribs. Nice depth to chest and body was moderately long and topline level. Loin reasonably short and breast bone was strong. Well ribbed up, with underline merging nicely into abdomen. Croup long and well muscled. However, lower leg was unfortunately a bit on the long side and was unable to give the correct drive. This affected the free flowing movement. This attractive little bitch had many things to like about her, but the quality of the exhibits today was too high. 3 Larkin’s Darsoms Zparkle.
PGB (1) 1 Mee’s Barlaine Razzle Dazzle Really pretty bitch with lovely gentle expression. Eye, almond shaped and obliquely set. Ear well set and of moderate length. Strong jaw with good dentition. Neck lack length which was a pity. Shoulder blades long, well placed and obliquely set, and able to give the 45 degree angle. Upper arm was close to ribs, and forearm had short strong bone. This angulation covered lowest part of keel. Topline level, but unfortunately a bit long in loin. Tail well set. Upper thigh correct angle to pelvis, but lacked length, which meant she would not pass the ‘pencil test’ across the hocks. Held topline on the move, but did lack power from rear. Front feet broad and deep, hind feet were flat and slightly smaller. Beautifully presented and in excellent condition.
LB (2) 1 Mason’s Crownlake’s Queen Bee JW – Black/tan bitch with beautiful head and expression. Eyes set obliquely and jaws strong. Ears well set and of correct length. Strong jaw with good dentition. Could do with a little more length to neck. Shoulder blades had correct 45 degree angle and length of upper arm equalled length of shoulder blade and laid close to ribs. The forearm was short and had very good bone and covered lowest part of keel. Breast bone strong and prominent. Unfortunately and bit long in loin that affected general outline. Excellent hind quarters correctly angulated. On the move she shone going around the ring as she had length of stride and drive from rear quarters. Well presented. Res CC. 2 Bell’s Tolberg Cream Delight. Cream bitch with lovely almond eyes that could have been more obliquely set. Well set ears and good mouth with strong jaws. Ear set high of moderate length with rounded tips. Good length to neck, with slight arch. Front assembly was very good with shoulder blades long and had the 45 degree angle required. Upper arm echoed length of shoulder blade and lay close to ribs. Nice bone in forearm and covered lowest part of keel. Ribcage long and loin short, allowing a nice level topline. Hind angulation was very good with upper thigh set at right angle to pelvis, and of good length. Tail well set. Good feet fore and aft. I was so disappointed with this bitch moved as she was very lack-luster and did not have the animation that I was expecting.
OB (5) 1 Whitfield-Roberts’ Ch Dandydayo Kiss The Girl What a lovely appealing bitch with those lovely almond eyes set obliquely. Ears correctly set, had well rounded tips, and framed the face nicely. Neck had sufficient reach and had slight arch and was well set into shoulders. Shoulder blades long and obliquely set at 45 degree angle to ribcage. Upper arm was same length as shoulder blades. Forearm short and strong in bone. Strong stifles. Moderate length to rib, well muscled, and loin had a slight arch and was short and strong. Rump broad and strong, croup long, pelvis also strong. Upper thigh set at right angles to pelvis, lower thigh short, also at right angles. Hocks would easily pass ‘pencil test’, and muscle tone was strong enough to give the drive from the rear. Loved watching this bitch powering around the ring on good strong feet. CC & BOB. 2 Metcalfe’s Metadale Ariadne Another very attractive bitch with lovely outline. Well proportioned head with beautiful almond eyes. Ears well set with forward edge just touching cheek. Lovely length with slight arch. Shoulder blades long and set obliquely. Excellent front with forechest prominent with depressions on either side. Chest was deep and ribs long and loins strong. Beautifully angled rear quarters. However, I thought this bitch was a dog of parts which did not blend in together. If her legs were a bit longer, she would have been the same height as length, but she was not. Powerful mover using plenty of drive from rear. 3 Mason’s Tolberg Beez Kneez At Teckeltown.
VB (1) 1 Weston & Johnson’s Ecotyne Firewitch Black/tan 8 year bitch who could do with shedding a bit of weight, as she looked a bit stuffy. Beautiful head and ears well set. Strong jaw. Pronounced breast bone with depression on either side. Well angulated shoulder and elbows tight. Well ribbed up, but would have liked more daylight under body. Strong loin, croup long, and tail set on nicely. Excellent feet with strong pasterns. Lacked a certain a vivacity going around the ring. BVB & BVIB
