Many thanks to Crufts committee for the invitation and hospitality, to the exhibitors for their entries and to my excellent stewards, Jim Cuddy and Hazel Warrener, who kept me and the ring on track. I judge all dachshunds on the basis they are small hounds, not toy dogs – therefore I am looking for a fit active hound with bold defiant head carriage with a ground covering stride with impulsion from the rear. My first proper encounter with dachshunds was with two min long Mertynabbot puppies, nearly 60 years ago –one went on to win the Dog CC at Crufts in 1970. These were robust, confident dogs who had a great time chasing around with two children they had only just met and I have expected all miniatures to have the same temperament ever since. I was disappointed to have several exhibits rather nervous on the table here. I feel the breed has changed markedly since the cream colour has become so popular and coat length and texture, pigmentation (nails and pads, and possibly noses) and heads have all altered, not for the better. Very few had flat coats and ear fringing. I found this entry very difficult to judge as type was very uneven, with several classes appearing to be “any variety” miniature long. Size varied. I did not find very many who would obviously have been over 11 lbs, and there were many more smaller types than I expected. I found 4 kinks in tails, and one or two with fused tail vertebrae. Very few missing teeth, bites were all good although there were many narrow jaws and also tiny teeth. Coat preparation was excellent – my hands were clean all the way through – but I was amazed to find exhibits with dirty teeth. Hind movement was, to put it kindly, shocking. Some dogs almost had their hock joint on the ground when their hind legs moved forward, with no extension behind at all. Very few covered the ground well and, sorry, but moving your dog fast accentuates this. None were too thin, all but one had adequate ground clearance, although in some cases I would have preferred more, especially on the move. Only one had any sign of eye irritation – a slight watering - which was obviously recent and I was happy to accept it was due to sawdust. Good Citizen Dog Scheme D (3,1) 1 Scrumptious Red On The Dot JW (May), this red kept a good topline on the move and had a good head, eye and neck. I liked his proportions. Moved soundly but would have liked a little more hind drive. A little short in upper arm but I much preferred his front construction to 2 Zilcan Vanilla Ice for Arlatdax JW (Morrin & Barbi), well proportioned dark cream, lower to ground and not moving well behind. MPD (3,0) 1 Findowrie The Field Marshal (Poole), very promising full coated red with correct proportions, lovely outline standing and moving, good strong teeth, scored here on hind movement, best ribbing and upper arm in class, 2 Dandydayo Cowboy and Kisses (Whitfield-Roberts), smaller red, good outline standing, not the feet or teeth of the winner, tended to move too fast which exaggerated his lack of hind drive, 3 Donnydax Run The Avenue for Jarletts (Bater), red with correct proportions but lacked the ribbing of first two and also lacked hind drive. PD (7,1) The first two stood away in this class and I see they are litter brothers. 1 Llansansior Red at The Door (Dalton & Beach), pale red with a beautiful profile standing and moving, excellent hind movement, loved his head and eye, good neck and front construction, good length of ribbing, correct hind angulation, good ground clearance, BPD on maturity and BPIB on his outline on the move. 2 Llansansior On The Rocks (Dalton), cream, appeared bigger all through and a little stuffy in neck which could have been due to more profuse coat, very sound on the move and well made all through with good ribbing and lovely head and eye. 3 Erinshore Red Robin for Ulani (Neasby), red, not the temperament of 1 and 2, pleasing head and eye, reasonable front, failed in ribbing and tail but much more typical in size and proportions to the smaller and lighter 4 Kyalozys Kingston Town (Lawrence) b/t, scored in hind angulation over JD (5,1) 1 Indiko Fire and Ice JW (Drady), cream, strode around the ring on a loose lead covering the ground with excellent hind movement, good head and eye, correct proportions, well angulated front and rear with good ribbing, liked him a lot - and the first of 3 from this litter to win a class – clever breeder. 2 Debbiejay Hansel (Carey), cream, not the angulation of winner but correct proportions and he moved well holding his topline. 3 Pettigans Leo of Leadhills (Mcgavigan & Pettigrew), red, correct proportions, pleasing shape stacked and moved well once handler loosened his lead, loved his head and expression, scored in topline over. 4 Daniello Dreamer Boy (Kasprowicz) chocolate, scored in topline over 5 Sanmik Captain at Welingtonway (Gunter). YD (9,1) 1 Scrumptious Red On The Dot JW (May) stood out here. 2 Daniello Diamond Dove (Kasprowicz) choc/tan, lovely type if lacking in coat and bone, moved well holding topline. 3 Restinim Mr Pip (Fairchild), lacked in ground clearance in comparison, but otherwise well made, held his shape on the move, very positive movement, preferred his topline to 4 Rivandell Sirius Black (Thomson). 5 Kenleap Fire Power (Cameron & Cameron & Sutherland). PGD (13,2) 1 Captain Caos (Causier), dark cream, well balanced with reasonable angulation front and rear, moved soundly and a nice size, slight tendency to lose topline on the move, preferred his coat and proportions to 2 Wishadax’s Blonde Showman Daniello (Kasprowicz) paler cream who lacked pigmentation, held a better topline than winner but rather too full in ribbing for me. 3 Christmas Cookie (Jury), well balanced silver dapple, preferred his front construction to 4 Cornwalldaxs Midnight Star at Damoradaxies (Turton). 5 Code Red Again at Arlatdax (Morrin & Barbi), this red dog lost his topline on the move but was really well handled by a young lad - please keep showing! LD (8,1) 1 Captain Caos (Causier). 2 Littl Fut Ximico (Nemes) choc dapple, very flashy masculine dog who can cover the ground but was moved far too fast so tended to lose shape, failed in ribbing to winner, much too long in loin. 3 Pettigans Bring Me Sunshine (Mcgavigan & Phillips), smaller red, sound and steady on move, scored in front construction and proportions over 4 Pachego On The Double (Emerson), scored in hind movement over 5 Revdvicki’s Theodore by Urishay JW (Latham-Jackson). OD (8,0) 1 Ch/Ir/Bel/Int Ch Zarcrest See in Red at Smartdac An Ch 22,23,24,25 Cw 23,24,25 (McDonnell), pale red, presented to perfection, best front construction today and moves with purpose and wonderful outline from well angulated quarters, covers the ground well, excellent topline and very good proportions, easy winner of CC in today’s entry and BOB on his correct oval front and outline on the move. 2 Ba/Si Ch Evasion Marshall (Gardy), very sound dark red who could carry a little more weight for me, good ribbing and I loved his head, front and correct coat - stacked he kept sinking into his hindquarters but won RCC on his ground covering movement which really showed up in the challenge. 3 It Ch Aramis Il Moschettiere (Cesare), the best head and eye of the day, correct coat, moved very soundly keeping a lovely shape but not covering the ground like 1 and 2. 4 Ch Zarcrest Red in The Room JW (Dalton & Beach), very sound, correct proportions and close up to winners but preferred their heads. 5 Mac/Kos/Alb/Srb/Mon Ch From Eversden Dachs Taron Egerton (Conrad-Evers) b/t, lost out on hind movement here. VD (6,2) 1 Ch/Ir Ch Ralines Sazerac (Woodvine-Shone), red, best mover in this class covering the ground better, with level topline, good proportions and good front, BV on his ground clearance. 2 Ch Hanishan Fire Cracker (Woodvine-Shone), red, smaller type, very sound and active but not the hind movement of winner. 3 Calvin’s Dream of Eternity at Xanadax (Brearley), level topline and good proportions, not the movement of winners but preferred front construction to 4 Lyndarlea Just Brian of Irisdax (Yates) b/t, liked size and proportions but failed in movement today. Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bitch (2,0) 1 Westwillow Sweet Pea JW (Tubb). 2 Rivandell Osha (Holtom), very close decision between these two creams of correct size ,both had adequate ground clearance and reasonable ribbing. Preferred 2’s head but 1 scored on both front and hind movement. MPB (3,1) 1 Summerview Lucy Locket (Phillips), b/t with lovely head although rather a narrow jaw, good reach of neck and well constructed front standing on good feet. Pleasing free flowing movement propelled by good hind angulation - BPB, lost out in BP as not holding her topline on the move as well as the dog. 2 Findowrie Field of Dreams with Restinim (Fairchild), smaller cobbier red, rather lower to ground but had enough ground clearance, not the reach of neck and not moving as freely as 1. PB (7,1) 1 Songbirdie in The Thistle (Lander), shaded red who does not always stand well but looked much better on the move, pleasing head, neck and adequate front and rear angulation. 2 Lampcien Fatal Attraction for Tiffwazz (Valentine), b/t in a slightly bigger mould but well built. Liked her head, neck and front, good ribbing. Movement rather unbalanced and lacked any hind drive. 3 Walnutfarm Biscoff at Torwood (Jury), a lovely size but completely out of coat, correct proportions, good head and front angulation, reasonable hind angulation, moved well. 4 Welingtonway Miss Mischief (Gunter), well balanced b/t, rather proud of her tail and lacked hind drive. 5 Dachadam Diver Damsel (Aneke), pretty red who lost on front angulation to above – good profile standing but lost topline on move. JB (11,0) This was the best class of the day. 1 Indiko A Touch of Cream at Tolberg JW (Bell), black and cream bitch with correct proportions, loved her size, sound active mover, beautiful head, correct angulation front and rear, held her shape well on the move with very good hind movement RCC. 2 Smartdac Storm Savia (McDonnell), equally beautiful b/t, lovely head, neck, front and rear angulation, just a little lower and longer than the winner and not as positive behind. 3 Urishay Quizzle (Latham-Jackson) b/t who excelled on the move, again I liked her head, neck and front construction but not the ribbing of 1 and 2. 4 Indiko Eternal Flame (Webster), elegant b/t who just failed on topline to 3. 5 Hanishan Solar Express (Woodvine-Shone) smaller sound red, well made but would just have preferred a little more length. YB (14,2) 1 Indiko Cast in Cream at Tolberg (Bell), cream, lovely proportions, pleasing head and front, very sound keeping her shape on the move with good hind drive and forward reach. 2 Crownlakes Million Dreams (Mason), darker cream, not the head of winner, very sound and active on the move, preferred her hind movement to 3 Findowrie Elana Rose (Poole) b/t in larger mould with a beautiful head and eye, excellent front and ribbing, not the hind movement of 1 and 2. 4 Westwillow Sweet Pea JW (Tubb). GC winner, not the ribbing of first 3. 5 Kenleap Honeysuckle (Law), red with good proportions who lost on movement here. PGB (17,5) 1 Indiko Cast in Cream at Tolberg (Bell). 2 Jentiki Cream Delight at Daxiedoodaa (Concadoro), very petite cream with very little coat but excellent bone for size, excellent proportions, rather narrow in front but good ribbing and moved really well, driving from a well angulated rear, covering lots of ground and holding a lovely profile. 3 Crownlakes Million Dollars Mason), b/t lower to ground and a little too long so not the proportions of first two, good angulation both ends and moved soundly. 4 Une Merveille Des Merveilles De Co (Scellier), silver dapple with good proportions but not the head of first 3 and slightly narrow jaw, lost topline on move. 5 Kenleap Honeysuckle (Law). LB (15,5) 1 Tolberg Here’s to The Future with Ravensbeech JW (Heather), cream with good proportions and lovely head and eye, strong jaw, good neck, front and hind angulation, nice tightly fitting elbows gave her best front in this class. 2 Devoncream Mystique Jewel Brown), cream with a slightly finer head and slightly smaller all over, otherwise very similar in type and construction to winner. 3 Ensigynes Glaciarium (Siggee), shaded cream with good head and neck, good proportions but rather loose in elbow and not the hind drive of first two. 4 Barlaine Golden Honey (Mcsorley), light red with good proportions but lost her front on the move. 5 Jentiki Cream Delight at Daxiedoodaa (Concadoro). OB (16,5) 1 Perla Delle Rose & Bambu (Barison), red with correct coat, strong head with good jaw, excellent dentition, ear fringing, good front angulation and ribbed well back – she had the shortest loin of the day. I loved her hind angulation and free flowing, ground covering movement. Taller than the other bitches, she had more ground clearance but still had correct proportions and just flowed from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail. Yes she lacked a prominent breast bone – but so did so many and because of her correct flat coat this was more obvious, so I forgave this today and awarded her the class as I thought she stood out here. In the challenge she was obviously different to the other bitches but won the CC on her overall shape and movement. She was flagging by BOB and lost out to the dog’s correct oval front and more balanced picture on the move. 2 Halunke Tzarina (Norton), b/t, standing she appeared rather lower and much longer but I liked her head, neck ribbing and front and rear angulation. She came into her own on the move, very sound both ways, covering a lot of ground, and challenged strongly for the RCC, I just preferred the proportions of the Junior bitch. 3 Ch Ralines First Past The Post (Walters), much smaller black and cream who was very well made with good ground clearance, correct angulation and good proportions but not the effortless movement of 1 and 2. 3 Dandydayo She Lives in You (Whitfield-Roberts), smaller and shorter red who could maybe have carried a little less weight, preferred heads and necks on first 3. 5 Criscan Que Paso (Norris & Brown), red who was a beautiful shape but just lacking any sparkle today. VB (3,2) 1 Ch Tolberg Beez Kneez at Teckeltown (Mason), red, a little low to ground for me and rather round in ribbing, good head and eye, had ear fringing, a little short in both length of shoulder blade and upper arm, reasonable hind angulation, sound and held a good shape on the move with good positive hind movement.
