MINIATURE WIRE HAIRED

Many thanks for the good entry and to my stewards for all their help in moving things along. Having been around Dachshunds since before Min Wires had CCs, I guess I must have seen most of the ‘greats’ over the years and watched the variety develop. I can;t honestly say they are going through a golden period at the moment, but there are plenty that satisfy enough. They are, on this showing, very mixed and it is not really possible to judge to any ‘type’ to any great extent, you just have to take what you get and try to recognise those that best fit the bill on the day. The males were very hit and miss and you certainly have to ‘kiss a lot of frogs’! Mouths have always been a problem, they certainly were in the earlier classes, both with lower canines fouling the upper jaw, a couple with only four incisors in the lower jaw, or others slightly misplaced. It was very frustrating in one class to come across a dog with super big, strong well set teeth that had to place last for other reasons. Bitches were much better in that respect. As weighting is the hot topic of the moment, I was most annoyed to find so many males that were just like toast racks to go over and they paid the penalty for that. Again bitches were much better in that respect and having come across an under 10lbs one in the Puppy class, I decided to mark in my judging book all those bitches that were 10lbs or under and I was staggered to count 16 at the end. So, well done, it just goes to show it can be done. The lightest was 9.3 and she was good enough to place well. I last judged them at the Hound Show in 2004 and was pleased to find this time that I didn't have so many that went into a totally different shape on the move. With such lovely big rings as at Crufts it gives dogs ample opportunity to really show how they can go and I like to base most of my placings on the moving dog, plus how it can free stand with a sound front.

VD. (5). 1. Boyn’s, Ch. Brindeckel Ballykay. 8 years old who was my CC winner at Paignton in 2002. Still a handsome lad who can certainly move as always. Good head, neck, shoulder placement, top and underline, also in good coat. Nice to see him again. 2. Morton’s, Dhuaig Designer Stubble at Cotherstone. A year younger and a size larger. God head carriage and showed well but not as strong behind. 3. Dunk’s, Bothlyn Knight Dreamer at Bronia. Another 8 year old but not the topline of the first two. Ok for coat, but not as good in shoulder placement although he looked better on the move than standing.

SpPD. (7). 1. Hayward’s, Foxearth News Flash. 11 months old and very good for type and coat with strong leg hair. One of the few with very nice feet. Good head, neck and expression. Moved quite well keeping a good topline. 2. Robertson’s, Soletrader Denis the Menace. Couple of weeks younger and one of my pre-show tips for the top as I have seen him in BP ring at the Great Joint. Very impressive type, good legs and feet but not the winners coat. Seemed in a hurry on the move and was not settled, pity. 3. Whitehouse’s, Rioban Beyond Justice. 11 months again. More compact type with a good coat but preferred the upper arm, shoulder angulation and length of rib of winners.

SpJD. (8). 1. Hadden’s, Wellbury Nijinsky. Real enigma of a dog, very raw and rangy and needs to fill in above the loin as he could stand with a strange topline. Pleasing head and neck. Very sound front with good feet. Good depth of body. Free mover if a bit proud of his tail. 2. Baldwin’s, Komobo Copyright for Beckel. Lower to ground and better over the loin. Fair coat but not as hard as the winners. Totally different type but a bit apprehensive. 3. Howell’s, Fallowmill Nutz About Toffy. Stocky chap with a good coat. Well bodied with plenty of bone and substance, but turns his front feet more than I like.

YD. (5). 1. Smith’s, Dunns Pitts Zakajak. Red brindle with a super big body. The best so far. Solid topline and a very good underline. Good shoulder placement and angulation. Good for coat and type. Just a bit wide in front coming to me. 2. Coles’, Weststonelee Trooper. A rangier dog with a nice neck but not the shoulder placement of coat. 3. Hadden’s, Wellbury Nijinsky.

PGD. (9). Better mouths at last in this class. 1. Kugow and Holt’s, Waldmeister Jackson JW. Lovely free mover with a very good coat. Good head and eye, neck, shoulders, legs and feet. At 19 months still a rangy dog who can drop down into his crook a bit more yet, but keeps a good outline at all times and can only go on improving. In the challenge he was still raring to go and pacing out strongly around the ring and ended up with a well earned RCC. 2. Murry’s, Brideckel Furrari. Another who keeps a good outline on the move and is sound coming and going. Ok for head and eye, but not as bold or as strong in coat. 3. Rathbone’s, Brialind Galahad. Fair head and good depth of chest. Super coat but not as good on the move as the winners.

LD. (14). 1. Morton’s, Molloney Tera Fried. This dark brindle rising 3 was the surprise of the day for me when later told who he was as I had seen him some time ago at a ringcraft club and wasn;t at all impressed. Would never have guessed it was the same dog. Super type, long, low and level. Good shoulder placement and angulation. head, top and underlines. Good body and very good outline on the move although he came at me a bit wide. 2. Smith’s, Dunns Pitts Supa Smiff. Another typy one. Super coat. Good bone but flat feet. Good top and underlines, body, shoulder placement and a real Dachshund shaped dog who moved well but not the length of keel of the winner. 3. Hayward’s, Foxearth Fools Parsley. More rangy and raw looking. Nice head and neck which flows neatly into his shoulder. Good topline and balanced angulation front and rear. Lengthy and well let down behind but rather more daylight under him than I like.

OD. (12). An interesting class to sort out. Forth and fifth were two more good Champions and the absentees included another British Champion, an Irish one and an American one as well as a dog from a Finnish kennel I admire. What a feast has they all turned up. 1. Wilberg’s, Ch. Kanix Keith. Still only 16 months but the dog that added up best of overall. Attractive head which is well boned under the eye. Well angulated both ends, reflected in his purposeful movement which is beautifully free and sound, going well both ways and keeping the same outline as standing. All covered with a harsh coat and he’s not overdone anywhere. Can free stand beautifully and never let his handler down once. A delightful little man who ended up CC and BOB. 2. Allan and Dick’s, Ir Ch. Auchans Roger the Dojjer. Last years winner, had heard of him but never seen him. Small, compact dog, in fact I noted that his handler had nice sound dogs. Good coat, nice outline, bags of substance and everything fits and flows. 3. Horswell and Iwama’s, Jap Ch. Drakesleat JP Trier Winshoten. Another lovely dog of a very pleasing type, necky, good topline and a well angulated rear. Good for coat and could gave gone higher had he been bolder which I hope will come when he is settled here and won’t need to be jacked up in front. Can only get better and I look forward to seeing him later.

GOOD CIT D (4). 1. Banks and Douglas’s, Torabbi Welsh Malt Sh CM. Nearly 6 and a really super big body with depth and length of ribbing. Moved soundly and kept a good outline. Scoring here in his better topline. 2. Dunk’s, Loretto Snuff Box Sh CM. Keeps a better outline on the move than standing. Coat needs tidying to add to the picture. 3. Billinghurst’s, Nordach Mr Show off at Jiljac. Another whose coat needed tidying. Nice depth of body but gets his tail up a bit too much on the move.

VB. (2). 1. Scott’s, Daisarch Something Special. Over 9 and still a very free mover who used her rear better than the second but could have carried her head better. Bog bodied, hard topline and gentle underline. 2. Marston-Teal’s, Lordscairnie Love Anew. A year younger and another with a super big body. Good neck and topline but did not stand and move as soundly behind as the winner.

SpPB. (11). 1. Blackburn-Bennett’s, Stargang Kasino Kween. Gorgeous 9 months old baby. Super type, long, low and level. Smashing body and angulation. Will broaden in front movement as she matures and there is nothing else to alter, just needs to live. The icing on the cake was her fabulous temperament, all wags, licks and wiggles, just like the majority of Min Wires used to be. Right up until the unbeaten bitches came back into the ring I was convinced that she would be my ticket winner, but her delightful temperament was her undoing when she had two kennel mates going around in front of her and couldn’t contain herself. She made my day. BP. 2. Kemp’s, Metcroft Diamonds and Dust at Vossmead. 12 months old red brindle with an attractive head and neck, super front and shoulders and just needs to let down a little behind, but her rear looked much better on the move than standing. 3. Hutchings and Waite’s, Molloney Sue Flay at Pedach. 10 months old and a nice type and again a lovely free mover. Nice length of head, keeps a better topline but not as true in front as the first two.

SpJB. (11). 1. Wilberg’s, Stargang Coco at Kanix. I thought an easy winner of this class with her hard topline, free movement 9although not quite as free behind as the puppy). Very sound coming and going. Good front and body which is covered by a nice coat and an attractive outline that she keeps on the move. Put up a good performance whenever she came in the ring and ended up with the RCC. 2. Howell’s, Fallowmill Tutti Frutti. Not the head of the winner but a more compact type with a super chunky body. Moved well and is a nice type in a smaller size. 3. Price’s, Samlane Pink Gin. This one tried her hardest not to be noticed and placed. Well angulated both ends, nice type and a good mover who must exasperate her owner. The only report you can give her is ‘Must try harder!’

YB. (7). 1. Blackburn’s, Stargang Coffee Renior. Another with a super coat and a chunky, well made body. Good shoulder angulation. Oval through the front. Good bone and feet and lovely hammy quarters. Moved well. 2. Horswell’s, Drakesleat Voo Lay Voo. Lovely type of bitch a couple of mouths younger. Good neck flowing across good shoulders into a hard topline. Better keel than the winner and moved very well but rather apprehensive. 3. Hardy’s, Kushwin Dollar Nyte. Another nice one who can also move. Sound front, but stands with her rear a little under her. Not the strength in head of the two winner but nevertheless completed a nice trio.

PGB. (12). 1. Kugow and Holt’s, Waldmeister Mischka. Another nice free mover from this kennel who still looks a little raw. Lovely coat. Good head, neck, topline and a well made body. Very sound but could just use a shade more bone. 2. Blackburn’s, Stargang Le Classique. Surely should be “La”? Compact bitch with a well made front. Long neck which flows into her topline. Neat size, good coat. Everything fits nicely but preferred winners keel. 3. Blacks’, Bassodon Borgia. Long, low and Level. Nicely made all round and very good to go over. So it was a shame she was in a rather dreary mood and didn’t put much into the proceedings.

LB. (16). 1. Wilberg’s, Kanix Kalainka. Another that it was difficult to know what to do with her tail was noticeably lacking in hair! Lovely type and length, good shoulder placement and coat (everywhere else). Well bodied. Sound front, hard topline. Fair head and great freedom of movement going very truly both ways. Interesting to find she is Keith’s litter sister. Her strong, active movement was the deciding factor in her placing as you can grow coat, but you can;t grow construction. 2. Holgates’, Drakesleat Gaysha Girl at Nadavin. Another lovely girl. Super dark brindle this time with a hard crisp coat. Smashing type I admire. Good body properties, length and shoulder placement, but just didn’t really try on the move otherwise things might have ended differently. 3. Hayward’s, Foxearth Fresh as a Daisy. Completed an excellent trio with her good body, top and underline. Although her front was well made to go over on the table. She came at me rather wide.

OB. (9). To be brutally honest, I was disappointed in this class and had hoped for better at Crufts. 1. Hayward’s, Foxearth Foto Copy. I thought her a very comfortable winner here. Red brindle with an attractive head, eye and expression. The good neck flows nicely into the shoulders, in fact she’s lovely to go over with a super body and good bone and feet. Well construed both ends. Although she reminded me of my favourite of this kennel from the ringside, Fat Chance, she didn;t hit me on the first go around as she was standing and moving a little high behind, but the more they moved and the more she settled into  herself the better she looked. Went even better in the challenge and ended up with the CC. 2. Dance’s, Emem Hello Ena. Real chunky little number with bags of substance in a small frame. Big body and well angulated both ends and she can certainly get along. It’s nice to see these under 10 pounders can hold their own in the higher classes. 3. Horswell’s, Drakesleat Why Knot. Better ask her that question! Lovely type standing and good to go over with her depth of body and all parts fitting nicely. Well made and sound moving, but just not bold enough on the day, such a shame.

GOOD CIT B (2). 1. Lordscairnie Love Anew. 2. Bassondon Borgia.
