MINIATURE WIRE HAIRED
It is three years since I judged Mini Wires and it was interesting to see how the type has definitely changed. So many are much longer on the leg than they used to be, with more ground clearance, which means that can step out much more freely. However, there is a tendency to more of a terrier rather than hound type, with upright shoulders, short keels and lack of ribbing. I wonder whether some are becoming too tall and square; they may look OK when stacked and crouched down, but they lack the Dachshund balance when they are on the move. I also disliked the overall expression that results from the round eyes that are now common. I only found one with a bad mouth (overshot) and one was over-weight. There seem to be fewer with the really soft coats that used to be present and I also found fewer to be nervous on the table than previously. I felt the bitches were stronger than the dogs, with some really lovely exhibits in Limit and Open. MPD (3, 0a) 1 Morton & Dudgeon's Jolanda Oliver Sudden: Promising 8 month brindle dog who has a lovely shape in profile. Good forechest and well laid back shoulder. A bit more crook coming towards me than I prefer. Neat underline. Good angulation behind and he moved very true going away from me. Could do with harsher coat. 2 Young's Nordach Mr Muffin of Tarkus: Red, of just under 9 months. Taller type, lacking the balance and more upright in shoulder than 1. Good topline when stacked. Toed-in when moving away from me. Good coat. 3 Baxter's Kapodach Love Me Tender. PD (4, 0a) 1 Wilberg's Kanix Oscar: Handsome young dog of nearly 12 months, with strong head. Good reach of neck running into firm topline when stacked, although he had a slight tendency to lose this on the move. Good length. Excellent coat and harsh leg hair. Extremely wellangulated behind which he used to drive well in profile and he was very true, moving away. 2 Thorn-Andrews' Drakesleat Rolling Stone: Brindle of nearly 12 months with good overall balance. Good forechest. Would prefer a bit more length of rib. Not the coat of 1. A nice puppy who will no doubt do well. 2 Price's Samlane Tetley. JD (2, 1a) 1 Poxon's Kapodach Chip And Pin: Slightly taller type, but still with good balance. Well put together in front, with nice, tight-fitting elbows. Could do with a bit more ribbing. Good harsh coat. Eye shape spoilt his expression and otherwise good head. Held his good topline when moving. Very good parallel action moving away from me. ND (1, 0a) 1 Baxter's Kapodach Love Me Tender: 8 month brindle, placed 3rd in MPD. Good bone and substance. Well balanced overall. Moved slightly wide when coming towards me. Not quite as extrovert as some. Would prefer a harsher coat. PGD (3, 1a) 1 Kugow & Holt's Waldmeister Henry: Well-coated dark brindle. Good head on elegant neck. Reasonable forechest. Good front construction, with tight-fitting elbows. Quite a deep body. This one looked better on the move than stacked - his topline in profile was good. Very true moving away. 2 MacDonough's Varrich Ben Lui: Heavier built type than 1 with not such an elegant head or neck, which meant he looked a bit "stuffy" by comparison. Wasn't keen on his front action in profile. LD (3, 0a) 1 Russell's Russteck Fillibeg: Very striking Black and Tan dog with superb harsh and wellpresented coat. Such a lovely Dachshund profile - good head, elegant neck, firm topline. Very tidy underline. Held his topline on the move. In the challenge for RCC I felt he put in a better performance than the others. RCC - I understand he already has several RCCs which must be frustrating for his owner as he is clearly worthy of being a champion. 2 Thorn-Andrews' Skootamota Sukka of Drakesleat: Another very well-balanced dog with good reach of neck and prominent forechest. Looks a real picture when stacked. Well angulated behind. Slightly more crook coming towards me than 1 and wider behind when moving away. 3 Miller's Bothlyn Time Master at Sharplan. OD (5, 0a) 1 Blackburn's Ch. Stargang Malachite: Two very different types here in first and second; and both have much to admire. 1 was a very harsh-coated brindle who looks a real "houndy", yet elegant, dog. Taller type than 2, but I loved his overall profile - good reach of neck and such a proud head carriage when on the move. Really steps out in profile. Moved very true coming towards me. CC and Best of Breed. 2 Horswell & Iwama's Ch./Jap Ch. Drakesleat JP Trier Winshoten: Well-balanced dog who moved confidently round the ring. Good forechest. Very tidy underline. Preferred his parallel movement coming towards me compared with 1. Good bend of stifle and moved very true behind moving away. Not the harsh coat of 1. 3 Hayward's Foxearth Newsflash. MPB (13, 3a) 1 Thorn-Andrews' Drakesleat Knot On Yer Nelly: Really loved the outline of this youngster of just 8 months. She caught my eye both standing and on the move. Good bone and substance. Excellent topline and neat flowing underline. Good length of ribbing. Good front with tight-fitting elbows. Well-bent stifle. She must surely have a promising future. Res. CC. 2 MacDonough's Varrich Lilo Lil: Another well-balanced little bitch with an excellent profile. Not quite the forechest of 1. Tidy underline. Well-angulated behind and moved true in both directions. 3 Blackburn-Bennett's Stargang Diamond Star.
