Thank you to the committee for a very nice appointment and to the exhibitors for their entry. It is a few years since I last judged this variety, and I must say that sadly, in my opinion, the breed in general, has not improved. In fact, I found some quite serious faults prevalent in a large proportion of the exhibits. Short forefaces with round skulls, deep ‘stops’ and the often accompanying round eyes were very much in evidence, and whilst not what I would deem a major consideration that would prevent their purpose as a working hound, breed type is very important and  must not be lost. Length of ribbing and keel, however are paramount to a hound bred for tunnelling and I saw too many lacking in this area. Also, their front assembly has the required angulation for very good reason, and too many had short upper arms with poor return. On a lighter note, presentation and coats were good,(although please stop over-trimming the heads to look like miniature schnauzers!)  there were only a couple with dirty teeth and long nails  Temperaments were, with the exception of a few youngsters who found the noise in the hall unsettling, very good. Underlines need looked at. Toplines were, on the whole good, but where are the prominent prosternums we used to see? Movement was varied with few displaying the correct reach and drive. My main prize winners were quality animals who fulfilled my interpretation of the breed standard.

M.P.D. (1)

1. Beaucat Eddie Tor (Neate) Good coated red boy with good bone and substance. Very unsettled by the noise in the hall. Correct topline held on the move, but a little short in keel. Good well padded feet. Promising with more schooling.

P.D.  (2)

1 .Ridanflight Rafferty (Rose) Overall  nicely balanced masculine dog . Well presented in correct jacket. Moved  ok in profile, but not positive going away, and ‘paddled’ a bit in front. Young enough to possibly improve with better muscle tone. BPD

2.Jiljac Bob Owpe (Goulding) Another puppy very unsettled by the noisy hall. Nice shape with good long keel and ribbing carried well back. Good feet. Better movement behind than 1.

Needs more schooling.

J.D. (3)

1. Drakesleat Fifty Scents (Thorn Andrews)Very nice shape with good top and underline. Correct balanced angulation both fore and aft with good keel and prominent prosternum. Moved well.

2. Waldmeister Rova To You Emem (Dance)A sound moving dog but a little square and high on the leg for me. Topline ok but underline showing too much tuck up. Could have a better return of upper arm.

P.G.D. (2)

1. Barratini Danz On To Ashridge (Dunn) Unsettled in the hall. Good front and rear angulation. Well held topline but a little short in keel. Good well padded feet but although movement was true enough, he tended to paddle a bit in profile.

2. W. Rova To You Emem. (Dance)

L.D. (6, 2ab)

1. Foxearth Fiddler On The Roof ( Hayward)  Masculine red male who had a good coat which was unfortunately just starting to blow. Best proportions being long, low and level and decent angulation. Loved his correct conical head and pigmentation. Would have preferred a little more drive from behind. Res CC.

2. Fallowmill Sergio (Howells)  Another nice enough male with just a little too much tuck up due to being short in keel. Sufficient angulation and moved ok. Nice head.

3. Taree Scoville At Wirefusion. (R. S. Hayward)

O.D. (5)

1. Ch Drakesleat Win Tin Tin (Thorn Andrews) Quality male of correct size but with bone and substance. Well balanced with good angulation at both ends. Correct front assembly with good length and return of upper arm.  Lovely sweeping underline showing his long ribbing carried well back.  Best mover in class. DCC.

2.  Ch Stargang Crusoe (Blackburn) Masculine dog in good harsh jacket. Topline held well and good underline. Correct proportions with good angulation. Slightly better feet would have improved his front movement which ,to be ‘picky’, tended to be a tad less positive.. Nevertheless a quality exhibit.

3. Ch Curtisey Boogy Woogy (Phillips)

Sp B. D/B (2,1 ab)

1.       Tythe Idaho (Hambling) Pretty little girl with a harsh coat. Moved ok. A little straight through behind. Nicely handled.

M.P.B. (7,1 ab)

1. Russteck I Dreamed  A Dream. (Russell)

2. Briarderyn Dot At Fallowmill. (Howells)

Nice class of youngsters. My first 2 were very promising with great coats and both moved very well. 1 was just a little more mature and had better proportions  with correct balance of long low and level. Her front was also better developed at this stage and her feet were tighter. Just loved the head on 1 as it is a shape rarely seen in this variety .  Res CC

3.Lordscairnie Rythmn Of Love (Marston-Teal)

P.B. (2)

Repeat of MPB

J.B. (11, 4 ab)

1. Drakesleat Scents Sybil (Thorn Andrews) Beautiful shape with everything in the correct place. Very feminine and of lovely breed type, but still very much a working hound. Movement true if a little fast! Plenty of bone and well padded and knuckled feet.  CC & BOB

2. Waldmeister Annie (Kugow & Holt) Another very nice example of the breed and many of the above comments apply.  Super coat and unfortunate to meet 1.

3. Taree Theodora  (Presnail)

P.G.B. (13, 5 ab)

1.Templestowe Sweet Dreams (Chugg)  Smaller made but all in proportion. Well constructed with good top and underlines and correct angulation fore and aft. Could benefit from a little more schooling and less baiting especially on the table which makes it extremely difficult for a judge to go over and is actually one of my pet hates!

2. Drakesleat Scent Sueall For Jiljac JW (Billinghurst)Taller and rangier type but still a nice enough girl although head a little plain. Moved ok.

3. Metcroft Pink String (Dunstall)

L.B. (12, 4 ab)

1.Drakesleat May Contain Nuts (Thorn Andrews)  Very similar comments to my JB as they of same breed type. Not in as harsh a jacket.

2.Foxearth Fatma Salkan (Hayward) Very sound red girl who’s length of coat detracted from the lovely shape found on going over her. Unfortunately this was enough for her to stand second instead of in the top spot in a limit class. Well constructed and balanced.

3. Barratini Hot Gossip  (Daykin)

O.B. (9, 3 ab)

1. Emem Candy Sunshine (Dance) Very nice bitch who moved positively and with ample reach and drive. Correct coat and with good outline which she held on the move. Angulation was good as was her topline. Good ribbing and prosternum.

2. Ch Drakesleat Trix Of The Trade (Thorn Andrews) Slightly finer made and not as strong on the move as 1. I also preferred the underline of 1 as she had less of a noticeable tuck up. Nevertheless another good specimen from this kennel.

3. Ch Lordscairnie Love Life (Marston-Teal)

V.B. (4)

1.  Ch Foxearth Foto Copy (Hayward)Lovely class and I seriously considered  this 10 year old red girl for the Res CC. In super jacket and one of the soundest movers of the day. Gorgeous pigmentation typical of this colour.  Great type and a true working hound. Just had to give way to the younger girls today but a worthy champion.

2. Drakesleat Material Girl at Kanstul ( Hill & Niall)Again very sound although I just preferred the drive of 1. Shown in lovely condition and has an absolutely beautiful head!

3. Samlane Pink Gin (Price)
