I would like to thank the Crufts committee for the invitation to judge Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds at this prestigious show –a great honour to judge my own breed.
My ring stewards, Jennifer Hiscox and Bill Evans, were so efficient and kept a smooth running ring –thank you.
The numerically high entry was flattering and the atmosphere around the ring relaxed and supportive. The sportsmanship was so obvious by the applause after each class.
With the high numbers of entries it goes without saying that many went card less and I was splitting hairs in many classes. The Open bitch class was the best I have seen for a long time.
Dogs were more varied than the bitches.
All dogs were shown in clean condition, with the exception of some dirty teeth – I would not have expected to see this here (or at any show). Some were in “soft” condition; even after the bad weather this is not acceptable. Nails in some cases needed a little clip.
Temperaments were very good. There were no failures of the temperament test.
Many dogs looked good stacked but movement let them down, the strong rear drive was absent in some exhibits. Some handlers moved their dogs too fast causing the loss of top line and rear movement to be challenged.
VETERAN DOG (4 -1a) These three guys are a credit to their owners and breed; their movement as good, if not better, than some of the youngsters.
1-Murrays Brindekel Furrari- dark brindle with balanced head, strong mouth, gentle eye. Well placed shoulders, good length of ribbing; well angulated rear. Enjoyed moving around the big ring with confidence.
2-Ritchies Bothlyn Timemaster at Sharplaw – same comments as for 1 but just lost his topline a little in profile.
3-Ward-Blowers Willowmist Little Red Rooster – slightly shorter in rib than 1 and 2 but motored. In good hard condition.
SPECIAL PUPPY DOG (3 – 1a) two outstanding puppies with strong masculine heads.
1-Fultons Brooklaid Sir Agravaine To Bothlyn- ResCC: BPD: BPIB – a chocolate with a harsh wire coat. Excellent head and eye, strong clean teeth, good length of neck, into sound front and well placed shoulders. Muscular body for a baby, well angulated rear, tight feet and correct tailset.Well off for bone. Good ground clearance ensured he sailed around this ring. Such confidence for a youngster.
2-Finneys Dom Porignon Vitoraz- not as settled as 1 initially but then decided to cooperate with his handler. Strong head, most mischievous eye, correct ear set. Elegant neck into well placed shoulders. Shown in hard condition. Again good ground clearance and he moved well.
SPECIAL JUNIOR (6 -1a)
1-Fultons Brooklaid Sir Agravaine to Bothlyn –as SPD
2-Roses Ridanflight Ricardo- of differing type to 1, a lot to like. Balanced head with lovely dark eye, clean shoulders and front, strong tight feet, angulated rear, good tail set. Shown in hard condition which reflected in his movement.
3- Hunts Earthseas Bobby Sox –kindest dark eye in a balanced head. So masculine throughout, strong bone, correct ribbing, moved with drive. Good front, kept his top line at all times. Most extrovert temperament.
YEARLING DOG (3)
1-Howells Fallowmill Sergio –close decision between 1 & 2 but 1 had the slightly better front while 2 had a slightly stronger hind movement. Well set leathers, lovely almond eye, sound shoulder placement and front and good ribbing. Coat in excellent condition.
2- Stewards Bassodon Dolce- sympathetically handled dog (going through his teenage stage today), once settled he did move well. Sound throughout, again with a good coat, strong tight feet and well angulated rear.
3-Hemmens & Harris`s Starhill Prince Hamlet- immature compared to 1 & 2 but this should come. More compact with strong body. Proudly carried head on moving. Such an extrovert temperament.
POST GRADUATE DOG (13 -2a) Difficult class with differing types.
1-Dance`s Waldmeister Rova To You Emem- does not show himself off enough; going over him he is so pleasing. Strong head, neck and body. Well placed shoulders, good spring of rib, muscled body, and strong bone. Moved with such drive and would win the waggiest tail.
