My family have owned min wires for over 50 years so I was really looking forward to this appointment. I was actually glad to have the appointment postponed from 2021 as it meant almost all the exhibits were new to me, the one downside to this meaning I never got to judge the fabulous Skinny. Many thanks to Crufts committee for the invitation and hospitality, to the exhibitors for a lovely entry and to my excellent stewards, Paul Hayes and Steph Kazana, who kept me and the ring on track. I judge all dachshunds on the basis they are small hounds, not toy dogs – therefore I am looking for a fit active hound with bold defiant head carriage with a ground covering stride with impulsion from the rear. Of course there are no scales at Crufts but only one of the exhibits worried me in terms of size versus function. No dogs were underweight , quite the reverse and many could do with more muscle. Lots of good temperaments, coats and movement, sadly also short upper arms, long loins, and poor dentition. Heads are becoming too small – miniature dachshunds should have big teeth for their size –and jaws should be strong and powerful. To accommodate this, heads need to be larger to allow for a broader jaw. There were far too many crowded lower jaws – the dogs normally shown under FCI rules had correct dentition and this is surely because most FCI judges check teeth more thoroughly. We need to do this in the UK too, as in many classes I had to place dogs with missing or misaligned teeth. I only found two exhibits with fused tail vertebrae. Some exhibitors need guidance on ring training and coat presentation – there are many experienced exhibitors who I am sure would help if asked.

Entries: 2 Absentees: 0
1ST Ch Bimini Starstruck (Mrs S J Jones)
Light wild boar, presented in beautiful condition, good head, ribbing, shoulders and feet, held his topline on the move and profile movement was excellent, hind movement today not parallel going away from me
2ND Jantar Red Horses (Imp Pol) (Mrs G J Bruty)
Chocolate wb, with a good coat which could be even better, moved soundly when he wanted to, preferred head of winner but he also had good ribbing and feet
Minor Puppy Dog (2,0)
1ST Barratini Du Beke at Lokmadi (Mrs Y Kent)
Almost 9 months good coated wb, good size, well balanced angulation, sound to and fro but losing topline in profile movement at present,
2ND Dajean Surely Keifer at Willowmist (Mrs C Ward-Blower)
Chocolate wb , and the lighting in the hall does nothing for this colour, longer cast with good head and neck, 1 month younger and not nearly as positive in movement at this stage, needs some work on coat which has potential to be excellent
Puppy Dog (4, 1)
1ST & BPIB Almarxils Diego for Ruichango (Miss M Corominas), very sound red who stood away here, coat just about to need some attention, lovely shape, super profile and to and fro movement, would prefer a slightly stronger head and more neck, but loved everything else about him, pleased to see he lives in UK.
2ND Dajean Surely Keifer at Willowmist (Mrs C Ward-Blower) , moved better in this class and preferred his shoulders to
3RD Lordscairnie Dubious Love (Mrs S F Marston Teal), good coat on this wb, would prefer stronger lower jaw, a little apprehensive today
Junior Dog (5,0)
A difficult class as all had some things I really liked and some thing I definitely did not!
1ST - Alfie Dobby’s House C&G Xo (Mr Sabau Marius Ciprian), beautifully presented red, brilliant temperament and correct dentition! Ideal size, very sound with good drive, would prefer a little more hind angulation and a slightly more masculine head.
2ND - X Ungue Leonem Vitoraz Nl/Be/Int/Ge Jch (Mr HH Brings & Ms S M Brings- De Kubber), very masculine red with a super coat, great bone, lovely head and neck, good front angles, reasonable ribbing, preferred tail set and carriage of winner
3RD - Kimbleholme Blitz (Mrs A Jones) very honest hard coated wb who moved very soundly, correct proportions and best ribbing in this class
RES Cardaxians Bambam Baby (Mr L J Beach & Mr M Partridge) – I loved this gorgeous dark brindle who would have been a strong contender but sadly was not at all happy today – moved really well if far too fast.
VHC Rednapp Sandbanks (Mrs J Livingston & Mrs L Westwood)
Yearling Dog (8, 0)
1ST Jackxellent Abracadabra D/Fin/Ee/Lv Jch (Mr J Heikkinen)
Red , wonderful coat, correct size, correct dentition, held a beautiful shape in profile movement and drove around the ring, if not quite parallel moving away. Lost out in challenge as to be very critical I would prefer a slightly more masculine head, a better sweep of keel and more hind angulation but he scored in front angulation here
2ND Pet Shop Boy Vitoraz (Mr J Busta)
Gorgeous wb, not quite as confident and not driving from the rear as I would have expected from his excellent construction, loved him for type and masculinity
3RD Molloney Woody or Won’t He at Ertekes (Mesdames Sexton & Dasilva), very harsh coated wb had best hind angulation in class but not quite matched by his front so his powerful hind movement tended to drive his front down, could not match profile movement of first two
RES Tabasco De La Legende D’androcles (Mrs M Ledreux-Marconnet)
VHC Griffingate I Have A Dream (Mrs L E Moss & Mr N Silvester)
Post Graduate Dog (8,1)
1ST - Dajean’s Red Sun (Mrs S J Tomsett), this correct coated dark red definitely deserves some ring training – beautiful when he stood on his own, a sound free active mover with good angulation both ends, good size, a little apprehensive which I had to forgive in this class as his overall construction meant he stood away from the others, please persevere with him
2ND - Irenidae Sea Star (Miss J L Thompson) beautifully presented red, lacks front angulation but held his shape in profile, slightly apprehensive on table
3RD - Nigel Nu at Zabannah (Mrs L M Lindfield) Unplaced in previous class but more confident now and won this pace on his movement, has a coat which needs attention to be at its best
RES - Moonbroch Squire of Gothos (Miss R S Stewart)
VHC - Foxearth Al Fresco (Ms B Cleall)
Limit Dog (14,2) the first 5 dogs in this class were of excellent quality, a lovely class to judge
1ST - Almarxils Almaens (Mr Noel Garrigós Mateo), I fell in love when he free stood at the end of his individual movement, smashing temperament, good coated red, with a masculine head, correct dentition and great front construction. Hind angulation is better than it looks as handler tended to stretch him out too far behind, handler moves him too fast, I felt he showed much more drive when moved slower. Has a tendency to stack with a topline which slopes down from withers to tail which lost him his chance in the challenge
2ND - Stargang Plutonium (Mrs E P Blackburn), it’s a cliché to say unlucky to meet the first but he was. Very free moving dapple wb with good coat, excellent angulation both ends, head, neck, feet and ribbing, just has a tendency to lose his front on the move, another great temperament and definitely CC quality
3RD - Little Bustard Vitoraz (Mr J Busta), super coated dark wb, excellent appearance when stacked, preferred his front to 2nd but not as well angulated behind. so did not quite hold profile on move, another who could have won a CC
RES - Beetlejuice Vitoraz at Helydon (Imp Cz) (Mr G Kirkwood) – carrying too much coat which affected his underline but a super sound red
VHC - Dereheath Shaken Not Stired at Birichino (Mrs S Gilkes && Mrs H M & Mr D G Storton) super coated well presented very sound wb
Open Dog (12,3)
Wow! One of the best dachshund classes I have ever judged. I adored the first three and any of them could have taken the CC, the placings being decided on fractions. Thank you for bringing them. I could have taken all day judging this class it was such a pleasure.
1ST & CC - M/CMKU Ch Besame Mucho Vitoraz WUT WJW FCI WJW Cz JCh (Mr J Busta) super hard coated red, very masculine head, correct dentition, well angulated at both ends and just looked at me as if to say “I am the best”, so true coming and going, again handler moves too fast – the slower he went the better I could see the propulsion from behind, held his shape in profile, great temperament and put down in wonderful condition.
2ND & RCC - Esp/Pt Ch Almarxils Hollywood WW22 (Mr Noel Garrigós Mateo) slightly softer but still correct red coat, well angulated at both ends, great profile movement if again a little too fast. Had a little more length, and if anything a kinder expression, really hard decision between two wonderful wires, just not as positive behind going away from me but I was really splitting hairs
3RD - Queenlord Planck Epoch (Mrs S Zwoferink Schut) another great coat, this time on a dark wb who looked super on the stack and in profile movement. Again well angulated both ends and a handsome masculine head, he was just a little untidy going away and coming towards me and this was the deciding factor, The best front angulation in the class
RES - Bothlyn Back in Black Bassodon (Mrs L & Miss E Black), such a lovely shaped b/tsound and full of substance, good ribbing, just needed to be more positive in hind movement
VHC - Ch Emem Solar Power JW (Mrs M Dance), excellent shape and a very sound dog, lacked presence and masculinity of the first 4
Good Citizen Dog Scheme Dog (3,0)
1ST - Dereheath Shaken Not Stired at Birichino (Mrs S Gilkes & Mrs H M & Mr D G Storton) excellent dog who was 5th in a strong limit class
2ND 17761 - Blackvein Cupid at Janacop (Mrs J Kilroy)
Paler wb, good to go over on table, stacks well, a little stilted behind and rather proud of his tail
3RD 17811 - Whitewebbs Jonny Be Good at Willowmist (Mrs C Ward-Blower), pale softer coated red, better in hind angulation than front, lacked masculinity
Veteran Bitch (6,1) all 3 were very similar in type but quite an age difference
2ND - Ch Bimini Blue Moon JW (Mrs S J Jones), slightly darker, again a good coat and well angulated at both ends but not as positive in movement today and slightly lower to ground.
3RD - Compania Pandora (Mr M & Mrs S Crow) carrying a little too much weight and a little longer in loin but held her shape on the move today – her condition is a credit to her owners at this age
RES - Helydon Jinglebells (Mrs D & Misses A & A Kirkwood-Emery)
VHC - Drakesleat Have A Yen for You (Ms J Mallinson)
Minor Puppy Bitch (2,1)
1ST - Dajean Surely A Vision (Ms T J Sieminski)
Lovely red almost 9 mths old, a little soft in topline but nothing else I would change at present, very feminine with super hind angulation and good movement, should have an excellent coat
Puppy Bitch (10,1) very sadly one very pretty puppy decided she did not want to walk on a green carpet today and her owner sportingly withdrew her, please persevere
1ST & BPB- Helydon Vexy Vixen (Mr G Kirkwood)compact wild boar, moved very well holding a better topline thatn 2, excellent head and eye, loved her type
2ND - Dajean Surely A Vision (Ms T J Sieminski)
3RD - Moonshe May Bee (Mr T Crossman & Mrs A Kennedy) smaller compact b/t moved well especially behind, just a little lacking in front at present but very promising
RES - Ottateck Rolalipawz Muscat (Mrs A Fitzherbert-Stewart)
VHC - Janter Chanson (Miss J Flynn)
Junior Bitch (8,2)
1ST - Helydon Tartan Talula (Misses A & A Kirkwood-Emery) very dark wb with excellent wire coat, looked a picture stacked, moved soundly holding her shape, very sound to and fro, well balanced with good front and rear angulation, good keel and ribbing, in the challenge looked a little heavier than others and I think less hair on underline would help
2ND - Stargang Fanfare (Mrs E P Blackburn) – red, I liked her for size and substance, plenty of front with good shoulders and ribbing, beautiful head, possibly carrying too much weight as lacked ground clearance, well angulated rear, super temperament but tendency to goose step a little in front through excitement I felt
3RD – Bardot’s Brigitte (Imp Swe) (Mrs G Mcdermott) lovely shaped wb not the coat of first two, a little loose in front and longer in loin but super hind angulation and a great temperament
RES - Bingobongo’s Alpinista (Messrs Flowers & Smith)
VHC - Emem Hazel Sunshine (Mrs M Dance)
Yearling Bitch (7,1)
1ST & RCC - Veni Vidi Fugi Vitoraz WJW (Mr J Busta) again this red bitch was moved too fast, looked so much better when slowed down, super coat, lovely head, perfect hind end, good front and ribbing, extra sound on the move in profile and to and fro, full of substance and personality
2ND - Almarxils Maya Ii (Ms P. Jordan) sweet feminine red with softer coat. Beautiful shape Such a good mover with excellent front and hind angulation, good ribbing too, sadly a little unsettled on the table or it would have been a tougher decision
3RD - Griffingate Elizabeth (Mr J & Miss G Rowberry) won this pace on her excellent movement, a little broad in skull but otherwise well constructed wb
RES - Rozelle Are You Ready (Mrs R J Mullen)
VHC - Granhoward Priscilla (Mrs P Grant)
Post Graduate Bitch (10,1) the first two stood away in this difficult class
1ST - Emem Autumnal Sunshine JW (Mrs M Dance)
2ND - Rozelle with Love (Mrs R J Mullen)
Two very feminine wb girls who held their shape in profile movement, good coats, preferred winner’s dentition and front angulation, 2nd is a tad shorter in upper arm but had slightly better hind angulation
3RD - Bothlyn Sweet Missy at Wistex (Miss J Stephenson) slightly lower to ground and not such a good coat, moved well to and fro and in profile
RES - Martinks Drives You Dotty (Mr M & Mrs S Crow)
VHC - Pennywave Pink Gin (Mrs G Stewart-Brown)
Limit Bitch (16,1)
1ST - Stargang Sapphire and Steel (Mrs E P Blackburn), loved this compact correct sized wild boar dapple with attitude. Correct proportions and feminine head. Good neck, ribbing and front, good hind angulation moved like a dream except for being proud of her tail. Close up for RCC but sadly became unsettled in challenge and decided she had done enough
2ND - La Bohéme Bourgeoise Vitoraz (Mr J Busta) pushed winner hard, not the ribbing, keel or hind angulation of winner but beautifully presented with super coat, moved well in profile but not so positive to and fro
3RD - Rozelle Kamiras Year (Mrs R J Mullen) scored on ground clearance but rather long, lovely head, neck and front, moved really well behind in profile but not parallel going away
RES - Middleton Hunt at Oniasid (Mrs A K Mills) loved her for size
VHC - Ona Meli for Merryline (Mrs A Merry & Mr D Vranch)
Open Bitch (15,4) two beautiful feminine red bitches – how to separate? What a wonderful kennel this is with such depth in quality. Preferred the length of 2, but when she stood her topline sloped down while the winner’s topline was immaculate and to my mind she personified the standard in miniature. Both had great bone and substance for their size, wonderful front construction, correct dentition and good coats. The winner had more hind angulation. Wonderful temperaments too
1ST , CC and BOB- Esp/Pt/Hun Ch Almarxils Tuatara WW20/21/22/23 (Mr Noel Garrigós Mateo) – a standard in miniature, harsh red coat, until this class I thought the dogs were superior but she took my breath away, every time I glanced at her she was standing correctly, foot perfect on the move with great drive from the rear - did not need to be raced around the ring. BOB on underline, tail set and carriage and wonderful hind movement.
2ND - Almarxils Llimona (Mr Noel Garrigós Mateo) Very close for RCC, in the challenge her movement away from me was untidier than the Yearling winner, again I was splitting hairs
3RD - Gralinn Sunshine Dancer (Mrs D E Whitehouse), good coated wb with lovely head and eye, correct dentition, very sound movement in profile and to and fro, she was sadly lacking any sparkle today but her construction won this place
RES - Ch Bimini Chasing Moonbeams (Mrs S J Jones), well constructed lighter wb and very sound but lower to ground
VHC - Archidax Dark Phoenix (Mrs West), lovely size, good coat and well constructed
Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bitch (3,1)
1ST - Byabye Brillare with Archidax JW (Mrs West) feminine red bitch with reasonable coat, good front angulation and moved well
2ND - Compania Pandora (Mr M & Mrs S Crow)
Lesley Patton (Judge)
