Thank you to the committee of Southern Counties for inviting me to award my first set of Challenge Certificates in Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds, my first Dachshund variety to judge at this level. Outside of the breeds I have owned, Dachshunds are my absolute favourite breed to judge and very few things bring me more joy than judging a class of Dachshund puppies. Not a strong entry numerically, particularly in males, however I understand dog showing is expensive, many of us need to work and the lure of a non-specialist judging on a Friday at a show involving the M25 would not be a tempting prospect; so, for those who did enter, you have my gratitude. Type and quality were very mixed with a few softer coats and couple of slightly nervous temperaments. The weather wasn’t ideal being windy, overcast and not overly warm, however I would expect from a German hunting breed a bit more hardiness than some were exhibiting as I do feel the conditions affected some performances. However, I was delighted with both my CC winners, both unexaggerated and fit for function hounds and really enjoyed judging my limit and open bitch classes which were both full of quality examples. Thank you once again for your entries, I thoroughly enjoyed my appointment.
Special Beginners (3) 1 Barratini Song and Dance with Rosencrantz (Rose). 11 month old with lovely feminine head, nice almond eye and a well made front with good lay of shoulder, return of upper arm and nice forechest. Excellent topline and sufficient ground clearance with sound, balanced hindquarters. Really lovely mover being sound up and back and typical in profile. Obviously still needs to mature but I felt the most balanced in this class and out of all the puppies entered today. Best Special Beginner, Best Puppy Bitch and Best Puppy in Breed. Delighted to see her take Group 4 in the Special beginners group. 2 Martinks Storm in A Teacup for Lonaza (Hawkins) Masculine dog who is a touch bigger than I’d like for a miniature, Good front and better topline than the third place, coat could be harsher and would like stronger rear movement, however went well in profile. 3 Martinks Drives You Dotty (Crow)
MPD (1) 1 Bimini Song Sung Blue (Jones). 8 Month old who was a bit overwhelmed today, possibly struggling with the windy conditions. Lovely head proportions with nice almond eye and good length of neck. Excellent front overall with balanced shoulder to upper arm and good forechest, nice topline when he stood correctly and balanced hindquarters with a good harsh jacket coming through. Still has plenty of maturing to do, best puppy dog, I just felt the bitch was more settled today in the challenge.
LD (4,1) 1 Dereheath Shaken Not Stired at Birichino (Gilkes & Storton & Storton) 2 year old male with a lovely head, good almond eye and length of neck. Excellent front construction with well laid shoulders, good forechest and good feet. Excellent topline which he held on the move with nice strong hindquarters and an excellent harsh wire coat. Sound mover and typical in profile. A lovely dog and happy to award him the RCC today. 2 Molloney Woody or Won’t He at Ertekes (Sexton & Dasilva). A dog of good breed type with a nice head and eye shape and a good enough front. Not as tight at the elbows as the winner and would have liked a touch more ground clearance. Good wire coat and overall a good mover, particularly in profile. 3 Martinks Storm in A Teacup for Lonaza (Hawkins)
OD (2) 1 Bothlyn Back in Black Bassodon (Black). Quality male with lovely head and eye shape giving rash expression, strong jaw and balanced skull. Excellent length of neck going into well laid shoulders, balanced upper arm and good forechest. Super topline which he held on the move and good ground clearance. Lovely harsh wire coat and strong hindquarters which he used well on the move. Lovely sound mover up and back and typical in profile. Excellent confident temperament which showed in his movement with excellent head carriage and he moved around the ring, Quality dog who I was delighted to award the Challenge certificate and best opposite sex. 2 Ch Drakesleat Gud to Go (Thorn Andrews). Another good male with a super head and expression and excellent front and feet. Tending to roach up today, possibly the cold weather and I would like a touch more condition over his loin. Sound mover up and back and good in profile.
V (3,1) 1 Byabye Brillare with Archidax JW (West). Bitch of super type with lovely head and eye shape, excellent length of neck and front and good feet. Held her topline well with a lovely harsh coat 2 Jantar Red Horses #(Imp Pol) (Bruty) Male with a nice head although a toch rounder in eye than I’d prefer. Good front and forechest and nice length of rid. Weaker hindquarters than the winner, moved OK.
MPB (4,1) 1 Bimini Indigo Blue (Jones). I felt this puppy was the most balanced of the three in this class today. She had a good head with lovely proportions and nice almond eye. Good length of neck going into a good enough front. Best topline in this class and most together on the move. Coat is still a touch soft but will hopefully improve with age. 2 Lordscairnie Peaceful Love (Marston Teal). 6 month old babay who wasn’t very happy on the table. Super head and eye shape and nicely made front. Once she settled she moved well. 3 Rozelle Rosalie at Janacop (Kilroy)
PB (2) 1 Barratini Song and Dance with Rosencrantz (Rose) 1st in Special Beginnners. 2 Zoltarous Mini Tui (Plummer). Nice enough head with an acceptable eye, good length of neck and overall front, although still needs to tighten up. A nice outline when stood with good topline and sufficient ground clearance but very erratic on the move today. Lots to like, just needs time.
JB (3) 1 Moonshe May Bee (Crossman & Kennedy). Quality bitch with a superb head and eye shape, lovely balanced skull proportions and good length of neck going into an excellent front. Good length of rib with good forechest, super topline and strong balanced hindquarters. Lovely sound mover. I considered this bitch for higher honours although was pipped by the maturity of the limit and open winners.
2 Barratini Song and Dance with Rosencrantz (Rose) 3 Do Smarties at Janacop (Kilroy) YB (3,1) 1 Bardot’s Brigitte (Imp Swd) (Mcdermott). Nice head and lovely elmond eye shape, good length of neck and excellent front. Lovely harsh coat texture, good topline and ground clearance. Movement was quite erratic and she’s a bit longer caste than I prefer. 2 Janter Chanson (Flynn). Nicely made bitch with a lovely head and eye shape. Good front and topline and balanced hindquarters. Another one who was quite unsettled on the move today.
PGB (4,1) 1 Archidax Hocus Pocus (West). Feminine bitch who was a nice shape overall. Good head although eye was round. Ok front, a touch short in upper arm, excellent topline and balanced hindquarters. Moved well enough to win this class today. 2 Martinks Drives You Dotty Crow). Bitch of nice type with good head. Was 3rd in special beginners but more settled in this class and held her topline better. Good enough front and feet and generally sound mover. 3 Dajean Kristar (Tomsett & Bruty)
LB (5) 1 Emem Autumnal Sunshine JW (Dance) Bitch of super type with an excellent head and eye shape, super ‘rash’ expression, lovely length of neck and excellent front with good lay of shoulders, tight elbows and balanced return of upper arm. Excellent topline, lovely rib to loin proportions and balanced rear with superb hard muscle, something lacking in a lot of exhibits! Excellent harsh coat and overall condition, lovely sound mover, with proud head carriage absolutely owning the ring today. Certainly, my find of the day and no hesitation in awarding her the CC and Best of Breed. 2 Rozelle Are You Ready (Mullen). A bitch of lovely type with good head and eye shape, excellent front and forechest, excellent topline and ground clearance and a lovely mover in profile. A touch weaker hindquarters than the winner and winner of open which cost her the RCC, however a bitch I really liked. 3 Bimini to The Moon and Back (Jones)
OB (3) 1 Archidax Dark Phoenix (West). Bitch of super breed type with a beautiful head and eye shape, another giving a super rash expression. Excellent front with nice tight elbows and feet and good forechest. Lovely length of rib with balanced loin and an excellent topline which she held on the move. Strong balanced hindquarters giving super sound movement, lovely in profile. Another in super coat and condition. A tight decision between her and the limit winner but had to settle for the RCC today. 2 Ch Drakesleat Too Gud to Be True (Thorn Andrews). Another quality bitch with excellent head and eye shape, super length of neck and excellent front. Not as happy today when stood, possibly due to the cold weather. Good balanced hindquarters which she used well on the move, looking super, especially in profile. A touch softer coat than the winner but another bitch of excellent type and a close decision between 1st and 2nd. 3 Rozelle Kamiras Year (Mullen)
