I would like to thank the Hound show for inviting me to judge miniature wirehaired dachshunds and also my excellent stewards who kept everything moving so efficiently and pleasantly. I was certainly pleased to be judging at the beginning of the weekend extravaganza rather than the end. I have to say that having to request wipes during my judging because my hands were so filthy was not something I expected.

It is sometime since I last judged the mini wires and unfortunately whilst I was very happy with my winners I felt that quality in depth was lacking especially in some of the lower classes.   I did feel that the bitches on the whole had the edge over the dogs.  I found there was an issue with  foreshortened foreface lacking the lovely conical head as described in the standard, this combined with round eyes and small ears definitely detracts from the overall picture.   I did however feel that feet were in general better with many having the nice tight feet that are so important in a digging breed. I make no apology for moving the dogs round several times as I don’t judge statues and a good handler can hide poor construction by clever posing.  I felt that in general the variety lacked  the ‘free and flowing movement with drive when viewed from the side’. Instead there is short pitter patter type movement  with no drive from the rear which is incorrect..  The parallel movement when seen from the rear was also missing on many of the entry.  Toplines were very variable.  Despite no scales I didn’t feel there was any great disparity in size.  Coats were in general good.  Temperaments were acceptable with most not backing off when returning to me after moving and handling on the table was mostly fine.

MPD. 5(0) 1.S. Hunt Earthsea’s Santa Paws – hard coated dapple that presented more of a balanced picture. 2. Stephenson’s Wistex Perfect Storm. More mature wildboar  Just felt winner had the better shoulder placement and therefore sounder font movement.3. Fitzherbert Stewart & Tomsett’s Dejean Spanish Gold with Ottateck.

PD. 3(0) 1.Peek’s Milkwood’s May Bud  More mature wildboar with nice tight coat and excellent feet. 2. Hayward’s Foxearth Frank Zappa Rangier puppy with time on his side. Excellent coat and good temperament. 3. Hill’s Weipowa Hocus Pocus.

JD 7(1). 1.Rose’s Ridanflight Gilcoru Gino red dog with good breed type. Particularly liked his correct headshape which was combined with good length of neck and better shoulders than most.  Moved out with style and balance.  2.Thorn Andrew’s Griffingate St George for Drakeleat another nice young dog . Again good breed type and correct head.  Excellent coat. Just preferred shorter 2nd thigh on 1. 3. Mill’s Hillersland Stroller at Oniasid.

YD 0(0)

SPD. 2(0) 1.Sieminski’s Dallandor Burdock wildboar with best overall balance. 2. Umfreville Dogrose Bee of Sound. Rangier dog again good hard coat and tidy head.

PGD4(0) 1.Mullen’s Rozelle Fools Gold. Lighter red but still with good coat. Best movement with better hind angulation. 2. Price’s Collidach Thomas Tank Brindle with correct head and good length of ribbing.  Not the hind angulation of winner which affected topline. .3. Sieminski’s Bimini Moonrise at Carlita.

LD 4(0)  1. Mills Jones’s Bimini Moonrise at Carlita Nice breed type with good head shape and reach of neck.  Presented nice balance on the move holding his outline. Preferred hind angulation  to 2.Fulton’s Bothlyn Trail Blaze another with good breed type and balanced outline. Excellent coat . 3. Lindfield’s Nigel Nu at Zabannah.

OD 8(0) 1.  Wild boar  boy with good overall balance with that touch of elegance to complete the picture. Lovely head and expression flowing into good reach of neck and good ribbing.  Excellent topline and hindquarters which allowed for free and sound movement round the ring holding his outline at all times. CC and BOB. I believe his 1st after 8 reserves. 2.  Rose’s  Ridenflight Remo Another lovely dog. Beautiful head and expression with again good shoulders and front flowing into correct ribbing. Moved with purpose and drive. Res CC. 3. Thorn Andrews Kumquat May.

VD 2(0) 1.Mills Jones Ch Carlita Sunrise. 7 years young and enjoying his day. Moved out with balance and drive.  Nice overall picture. Best Veteran. 2. Bruty’s Janter Red Horses. Hard coated chocolate with good headshape and tight feet. Felt winner just had the edge on the move.

MPB 1(0) 1.Tomsett’s Dajean Spanish  Eyes very immature wildboar who was not cooperating with handler  which made her difficult to assess. Time is however on her side.

PB  3(1) 1 Peak’s Milkwood’s May Ze. Light red baby finding the day a touch nerve racking. Again needs more time.

JB 5(0) 1. Rose’s Merryline Martha with Rosencrantz wildboar bitch with balanced outline. Reasonable shoulder and good ribbing who moved out well. 2. Dance’s Emem Joyful Sunshine.  The name fits the dog as she was ‘joyful’ lovely exuberant temperament best of the day.  Held her outline at all times just preferred winners more free flowing action. 3.O’Connell’s Almarxis Flamenco Dancer ar Liennocor.

YB 5(1) 1. Kilroy’s  Rozelle Rosalie at Janacop Red bitch with nice reach of neck into better shoulders and good length of rib. 2.Fletcher’s Collidach Dusty Storm Dapple with correct head and good overall balance. Felt just needs time to mature. 3. Blackburn’s Starganf Aurora.

SBB 0.

PGB 9(1). 1. Rose’s Barratini Song and Dance with Rosencrantz Hard coated red . Correct head flowing into good length of neck. Prominent pro sternum and good ribbing. 2. Clements Springdac Selsa N’Shake  wildboar and similar remarks apply as to winner close decision. 3. Hutchings Collidach Delta Storm.

LB 7(0)  Lazzaretto’s Thalia Blooming Grace Dark wildboar excellent head with good eye shape. Reach of neck flowing into correct front with length of ribbing. Nice overall balance and really moved out with drive and purpose holding a strong topline Res CC. 2. Golkes & Storton & Storton Dereheath Love is the Tonic Another very smart bitch whose correct construction allowed her to move out well. 3. Dance’s Emem Hazel Sunshine.

OB 7(0) 1. Whitehouse  Ir Ch Gralinn Sunshine Dancer Lovely brindle bitch with that touch of elegance that I love. Beautiful feminine head flowing into length of neck and tidy  front assembly. Correct amount of ground clearance which allowed her to move out with purpose and drive. CC which I was told made her up – congratulations.2. Thorn Andrews Drakeleat Hear No Evil Sound bitch with nice breed type. Correct head and overall balance. Just preferred the more elegant outline of 1. 3. Mills Middleton Hunt at Oniasid.
