I should like to thank the committee the for the invitation to judge the entry of 48 at this show. The sporting attitude of exhibitors and my two hyper-efficient/friendly stewards made it a very pleasant day.

To give a concise overview of the entry would be difficult, as type and conformation varied widely. To quote the Standard  - “It is essential that build, size and proportions ensure working ability”.  I did find this in most of my winners, in particular in my BIS, who combined the shape, size and substance, and condition that told me she would be fit to work. However, many throughout were in soft condition, sometimes overweight, ribs buried. It was as though they are living the home life of Toys rather than a working dog.  Fit for function is essential for health and general welfare. Front assemblies were mixed in degree of angulation. It was good to see a few with that defining slight arch to neck accompanying good shoulder and neck fit.  There was a variety of coat type and coat preparation –  not so many with the required “short, straight, harsh coat with dense undercoat” . Some were just uneven in presentation and needing more work.  Sometimes ground clearance was difficult to assess, with, for some reason, a bush of hair left under the sternum. Temperament was generally good, with just one or two nice specimens not showing to advantage.

Baby Puppy Dog or Bitch (1,0)
