I was delighted to be asked to judge Best In Show at this Dachshund Club Open show, almost 20 years since I first judged the breed and the final time judging them at an open show before awarding my first set of CC’s this year. My fellow judges had sent through some lovely dogs with almost a full compliment for each challenge, just missing a W/H in the veteran lineup.
Best In Show - Jenivon's Starfinch, Dachshund (Min Smooth) (Mrs J Jennings). 2yr dog who caught my eye when he entered the ring holding a super outline in profile, head high, topline firm, covering the ground with ease. Masculine head of good length with intelligent expression, dark eyes, broad mobile ears and strong jaw. Nicely balanced in outline, compact and well muscled with good neck and shoulders, well ribbed back to strong loin and well angulated rear. Presented in gleaming condition, super temperament and handled to an advantage to really get the best out of him.
Reserve Best In Show - Helydon Xtra Xpecial JW, Dachshund (Min Wire) (Misses A & A Kirkwood-Emery) Not quite 2 years old and still has some maturing to do both in body and mind but couldn’t be ignored in the challenge! On the stack his outline is very impressive with super reach of neck, good topline, underline and clearance, lovely front and rear assembly, strong bone and good feet. Well proportioned head with dark eyes and beautiful expression. Moved with purpose, good out and back and really covering the ground well in profile. In super coat, expertly handled.
Best Puppy In Show - Sujarah Dare to Dream, Dachshund (Long) (Mrs S Rodrigues) I thought this 10month dog was the standout winner here, already maturing well, in glorious condition with a great attitude. Lovely outline with arched neck flowing into a firm topline, nice front assembly with good chest and ribbing, enough clearance beneath, well angulated rear with correct tail set and carriage. Handsome, masculine head of correct proportions with strong jaw, dark eyes and well set and used ears. Moved with purpose, holding his outline firm with head carried high and a decent length of stride.
Reserve Best Puppy In Show - Dandydayo Cowboy and Kisses, Dachshund (Min Long) (Mr A Whitfield-Roberts) Another lovely baby, only 8 months old and not quite the confident performance of 1 however his qualities couldn’t be ignored. Compact and balanced in outline with super front and rear assembly, body maturing well for age, well ribbed back to strong loin, good topline and underline with enough clearance beneath. Appealing head and expression with dark eyes, dense pigment, strong jaw and well set and used ears. He really used himself well on the move, covering the ground with good reach and drive, holding a lovely outline, accurate in all directions.
Best Veteran In Show - Pennydach Mystique at Rosencrantz VW, Dachshund (Min Smooth) (Mrs B J Rose) Just a few days before her 8th birthday but hiding her years so well, always standing to an advantage and holding her smart outline well on the move. Feminine head of good proportions carried proudly, good neck into sound front assembly, level topline, strong loin and well angulated rear. Smart and purposeful on the move, the best out and back here with some reach and drive in profile. In fit, well muscled condition, a credit to her owner.
Reserve Best Veteran In Show - Gulliagh Loganberry of Robinswood Dachshund (Min Wire) (Mrs Iona Phillips) 8yr dog of a good size with plenty of clearance, firm topline, ample reach of neck and balanced front and rear angulation. Good length of skull with dark eyes and high set ears. Won his place here on his smart profile movement, maintaining his outline with head held proudly, topline firm and tail carried correctly.

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of The Dachshund Club for their invitation to judge Long and Mini Long at their 2026 Open Show. Having grown up with Mini Longs and now owning Longs, it was an honour to be invited and a huge thank you to all exhibitors who entered and took my decisions with good humour and grace. Thank you also to my stewards who kept things moving in the ring. I was delighted to see my Long and Mini Long puppies taking the Best Puppy and Reserve Best Puppy in Show awards respectively. DACHSHUND (LONG HAIRED) Pd (3,2,1) 1st Sujarah Dare To Dream Promising young male with a super outgoing attitude. Balanced in profile with good proportions and plenty of substance. Well shaped head, lovely dark eye set obliquely, correct ears, strong muzzle. Good front assembly, sufficient forechest, good feet, ribs are OK, strong loin giving correct topline, nicely angled rear, well muscled second thigh, in lovely coat and condition. Excelled on the move, parallel out and back and covering the ground well in profile. RBD, BPIB Jd (2) 1 Ranglewood Christmas Star S/R Smaller in type but still balanced. Pleasing head with correct proportions and lovely dark eye, correct ears, good length of neck into well placed shoulder, nice tight elbows. Ribs going well back and in lovely muscular condition, tail set correctly, well angled rear with hocks well let down. He moves out well with sufficient drive, lovely in profile. 2nd Ranglewood Xmas Cracker To Riveroyal B/T Heavier in type than 1, he is a substantial dog but carrying a little weight. Masculine head, good eye and ear, strong muzzle. Sufficient forechest and good feet, ribs extending back, correct angulation at the rear. When settled he moves well out and back and just lost out to his littermate. Pgd (2,1) 1 Ranglewood Phoenix At Donnadach B/T Balanced in profile. Pleasing head with correct proportions, nice reach of neck into good shoulder, prominent forechest, ribs extending back and strong muscular loin, nice topline. Muscular at the rear, hocks well let down. Moves parallel out and back and covers the ground well in profile with lovely head and tail carriage. ld (4,1) 1 Abydezi Shades Of Glory Mature S/R male, masculine and presents a nice balanced outline with good proportions. Masculine head of correct shape and good planes, lovely dark eye and ear and good strong muzzle. Good reach of neck into well placed shoulder, prominent sternum and good feet. Ribs OK and loin is strong and muscular. In good coat and condition, moved OK. BD 2 Ranglewood Finlaggan At Donnadach Mature male, good size with a pleasing head of good shape. Good reach of neck, prominent forechest, good bone and feet, rear OK. Moves OK, could do with a little more drive. 3 Bay Of Biscoff Biscuit At Damoradaxies VD (1) 1 Ranglewood Harvest Song 9 year old B/T male, in lovely condition for his age. Pleasing head, good front and rear assembly, good ribs and strong loin. He was loving his day out and moved well, a credit to his owner. BVIB PB (2) 1 Swansford Opheliadora Promising youngster, B/T with great attitude in the ring. Pretty head, correct shape, nicely put together front with prominent forechest, nice tight elbows and good feet. Ribs extending back and correct topline. She has a lot of maturing to do but moves well, parallel out and back and with a good outline in profile. 2nd Sujarah Daydream Believer Another lovely youngster, unfortunate to meet 1. Prettiest of heads, lovely eye and correct ear. Good reach of neck into well laid shoulder. She is well made throughout but still a bit raw with a lot of maturing to do. Good rear angulation, not quite the drive of 1 on the move. PGB (2) 1 Pettigans Viva La Vida By Riveroyal JW Feminine bitch, balanced. Pleasing head of good proportions. Nicely arched neck into well placed shoulder, good elbows. Ribs OK, good topline, slight rise over the loin. Nicely angled at the rear. In good coat and condition, moves well, covering the ground. 2 Ranglewood Katrine Feminine head of correct shape, good forequarters with sufficient bone and good feet. In muscular condition, ribs OK, level topline. Moves with sufficient reach and drive, giving her owner quite the runaround today, which is a shame. LB (3) 1 Kyrenia Queens Request With Ranglewood Nicely balanced bitch, lovely head of good shape, correct eye giving a lovely expression. Nice strong arched neck and good shoulder with prominent forechest, good elbows. Nice spring of rib and strong loin giving a good topline. Nicely angled at the rear. Lovely coat and condition and moved parallel out and back and in profile with lovely head carriage. RBB 2 Abydachs Renegade Angela At Abydezi Another nice bitch, heavier set throughout. Good head, nice eye. Front is OK but carries a bit of weight over the shoulder, ribs OK. Nicely angled rear and moves well, covering the ground with plenty of reach and drive. 3 Tarramist Starlight (AI) OB (3,1) 1 Ranglewood Andromeda Caught my eye when she came into the ring. Super feminine, balanced and with a lovely attitude. Lovely head, nice eye and expression. Good neck into clean shoulder and prominent forechest, good spring of rib, strong loin and good rear angulation. In lovely muscular condition, good coat and really motored round the ring. BB, BOB 2 Tarramist Platinum Aria (AI) Feminine head of correct shape, prominent forechest. Would prefer a better return of upper arm. Good ribs, strong loin giving correct topline. Moved and handled well. 3 Swansford Palomadora Veteran Bitch (2)

Junior dog 2/1 1st Fitzherbert, Stewart & Tomsett - Dajean Spanish Gold with Ottateck. 16 month old shaded red with a good head, almond eye, good earset and nice teeth. Nice length of neck into good lay of shoulder and deep chest. Reasonable ribbing & length of loin. Moderate rear angulation but moves straight with drive.
Post Graduate dog 3/1 1st Kirkwood-Emery - Helydon Xtra Xpecial JW. 17 month old wild boar who caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring & proved to be a real showman. Good overall size & balance with a lovely head and dark almond eye. Strong, long, slightly arching neck leading to a correctly angled shoulder and good deep chest. Tight feet. Good rib and loin ratio with a level topline held at all times. Correct rear angulation helping him move very well with real power & drive. Pleased to award him BOB & happy to see him go RBIS 2nd Foley - Bimini Alfie Moon at Clavennae. 2 year old wild boar with a nice head leading to a moderate neck. Ok shoulder angulation and would prefer a slightly stronger chest. Good ribbing & length of loin. Moved ok.
Limit dog 2 1st Phillips - Birichino Barley of Robinswood. 6 year old brindle with a nice head and correct almond eye leading to a good length of neck. Shoulder is set slightly forward but has a good chest and rib to loin ratio is spot on. Good tail set & he won this class as I preferred the movement to 2nd, reserve best dog. Coveney - Emem Django. 5 year old wild boar with a nice conical shaped head but has a slightly round eye. Good neck but would prefer a slightly deeper chest. Ribbing doesn’t extend far enough back for me. Slightly close coming and going today with a high tail set.
Open dog 3/2 1st Gilkes - Dereheath Shaken Not Stired At Birichino. 4 year old wild boar with a nice conical head and correct almond eye and ear set. Nice long slightly arched neck and deep chest but slightly upright in shoulder. Would prefer slightly more ground clearance. Moderate length of ribbing & slightly under angled on rear but moved ok.
Veteran dog 1 1st Phillips - Gulliagh Loganberry of Robinswood. 8 year old wild boar with a good head & correct almond eye but ear set is a little low. Good length of neck and & moderate chest. Good shoulder angulation and good ground clearance. Ribbing extends well back & is coupled to a nice short loin, tailset is slightly high. Moved ok, best veteran in breed.
Puppy bitch 6 1st Tomsett & Fitzherbert-Stewart - Dajean Mimosa. 8 month old wild boar with correct conical head but eye is slightly round. Good strong scissor bite & correct ear set. Good slightly arched neck leading to correct shoulder placement & moderate chest. Ribbing extends well back coupled to a nice short loin. Good rear angulation & won this class as she was the most settled mover in the class, BPIB. 2nd Kirkwood Emery - Helydon Yer Yolo. 6 month old wild boar with lots of promise. Correct conical head & dark almond eye. Nice slightly arched neck into well laid shoulder and good chest. Reasonable length of ribbing and short loin helps support a good topline held at all times. Moved ok but considering this was her first show I’m sure she will improve with time.
Junior bitch 4/1 1st Marston Teal - Lordscairnie Love in Paris, 13 month old wild boar with a good conical head and correct ear set. Slightly short in neck but good lay of shoulder & reasonable depth of chest. Would prefer ribbing to extend slightly further back & more rear angulation but moved straight & true with drive. 2nd Rose - Rozamie Reflection of Rosencrantz. 11 month old chocolate & tan with a nice head, correct almond eye and good ear set. Good length of neck and good chest but slightly upright in shoulder & would prefer ribbing to extend slightly further back. Ok rear angulation, just needs to drop at rear, but moved ok away & back.
Post Graduate bitch 8/2 1st Rose - Merryline Martha with Rosencrantz JW. 2 ½ year old wild boar. Good conical head with dark almond eye. Good length of neck flowing into correct shoulder placement. Would prefer a slightly deeper chest but has good ground clearance with good length of ribbing and short loin. Good rear angulation and moved straight & true with drive. 2nd Lindfield - Zabannah Firestar. 20 month old shaded red with a lovely head with correct almond eye and ear set. Good length of neck with good chest and shoulder placement. Slightly short in ribbing but rear angulation ok, moved well but wouldn’t want any bigger.
Limit bitch 8/4 1st Gilkes - Dereheath Love is the Tonic At Birichino. 4 year old wild boar with a good ‘houndy’ head, correct dark almond eye and ear set. Moderate length of neck with correct shoulder and good depth of chest. Ribbing to loin ratio was spot on creating a level topline. Moderate rear angulation, she was the best mover in the class & considered for RBB. 2nd Brown - Payched Eglantine Rosebud. 4 year old wild boar with correct conical head and ear set but slightly rounded eye. Lovely length of neck and good depth of chest. Would prefer ribbing to be slightly longer but good balanced angulation between front & rear. Moved well & was unlucky to come up against 1 today.
Open bitch 5/3 1st Kirkwood Emery - CH Helydon Tartan Talula JW. 2 year old wild boar who is another good example of the breed from this kennel. Good conical head and dark almond eye with correct ear set leading into lovely long slightly arched neck. Correct shoulder placement and good depth of chest with a long keel & ribbing that extends well back. Good rear angulation and moves with great drive around the ring, BOS & only lost in the challenge as the dog was more settled. 2nd Dance - Emem Hazel Sunshine JW. 3 year old wild boar who pushed 1 really hard for the win, I’m sure these 2 would swap places on another day. Lovely conical head & dark almond eye. Long slightly arched neck leads to good shoulder placement & another with good depth of chest. The keel extends well back as does the ribbing which leads to good rear angulation. She moved with real drive but for me was just slightly closer behind than 1 today, just had to call her back in for RBB.

correct ears. Good forequarters, prominent forechest, good feet, ribs OK and
nice level topline, good rear, hocks nicely let down. Moves with plenty of drive
and attitude. RBD & BPIB 2nd Findowrie The Field Marshal Promising youngster,
masculine head of correct shape, ribs OK and nice level topline. Moves well,
covering the ground with plenty of attitude. Unlucky to meet 1. JD (2) 1 Sanmik
Captain At Welingtonway Masculine dog, balanced with pleasing head of correct
shape, good neck and forechest, nicely angled front and rear, strong loin with
level topline which he keeps on the move. Moved and handled well with nice head
carriage. 2 Cornwalldax Red Maple At Damoradaxies Pleasing head and expression,
good neck, front is OK. Would prefer better ribbing and loin as he lost out to 1
on his lack of body and condition. Moves OK, handled well. PGD (2) 1 Restinim Mr
Pip Balanced in profile, masculine head, good neck into well placed shoulder,
sufficient forechest, well bodied and level topline which he carried on the
move, covering the ground well with nice attitude and head carriage. 2nd
Cornwalldax Midnight Star At Damoradaxies Pleasing head, good forequarters, ribs
OK, good rear angulation. Would prefer a better tail set. Not very settled
today, which was unfortunate. LD (1) 1 Dolyharp Rossini At Garbosa Lovely
proportions, balanced and masculine without being overdone. Super head, good eye
and expression, correct ears. Nice forequarters, prominent forechest, good ribs
and strong loin giving a nice topline which is kept on the move, good rear
quarters, nicely defined second thigh. He has substance and condition which
showed in his movement, covering the ground well and with lovely head carriage.
BD & BOB PB (4) 1 Summerview Lucy Locket Promising young bitch, B/T, nicely
balanced profile, pleasing head of correct shape, good reach of neck into well
placed shoulder, prominent forechest and good feet. Ribs extending back and
nicely bodied for age. Good angulated rear, hocks well let down and parallel.
Excels on the move, parallel out and back and lovely in profile, keeping her
topline on the move. 2nd Findowrie Forget Me Not Not quite the substance of my
winner but a balanced and feminine bitch throughout. Nice feminine head, good
eye and expression. Well made throughout, good forechest. She really covers the
ground on the move with lovely head carriage and topline. 3 Welingtonway Miss
Mischief JB (5,1) 1 Darsoms Zygreta Feminine all through, balanced and in
proportion. Pleasing head, arched neck into good shoulder. Nice front assembly
with prominent forechest, ribs OK and strong loin which gives her a good topline
and nice underline. Won the class on movement, parallel out and back and really
covering the ground in profile with good head and tail carriage. 2 Findowrie
Field Of Dreams And Restinim Promising youngster, feminine head and good reach
of neck, well made fore and aft with good angulation, moves well but still has a
lot of developing to do. 3rd Cheritondax Pinot Grigio For Rivandell PGB (6,1,5)
1st Darsoms Zyleah Balanced feminine bitch, good head shape, eye and expression.
Arched neck into well placed shoulder with good forechest, good ribs, strong
loin giving correct topline and moves well with sufficient reach and drive. RBB
2 Dachadam Hopes And Dreams Another nice bitch, feminine head, good reach of
neck, OK front, ribs extending back, strong loin and moves well. Just not the
front assembly of 1. 3 Sanmik Preacher's Cream For Restinim LB (3,1) 1st
Rivandell Osha Mature bitch presenting a good balanced profile, feminine head,
good proportions. Nice front assembly and good ribs, strong loin and a good
topline. Rear angulation is good with hocks well let down and parallel. Moved
well with nice head and tail carriage, covers the ground. 2 Dolyharp Grace Kelly
At Cheritondax JW Lighter framed than the winner and with more leg. Pleasing
head with nice dark eye and good pigment. Good front assembly, ribs and loin. On
the move she is a bit close behind today and not quite the reach and drive of
the winner. OB (3,1) 1 Findowrie Elana Rose Super balanced bitch, good
proportions and a good size. Feminine head, she has a good neck, arched and

Another nice bitch, again balanced and a good size. Pleasing head and good neck
and shoulder, ribs are OK, nice level topline, rear angles are good, hocks well
let down and parallel. Moves well, I just preferred the overall picture of 1. VB
(1) 1 Ralines Cameo At Rivandell Mature bitch, 10 years of age and a credit to
her owner. Lovely balanced profile, a good size. Nice head, eye and ear, nice
length of neck, good fore and aft and still carrying a good topline. Enjoyed her
day out, moving out and back well, parallel and in profile. BVIB

My thanks to the committee & club for the invitation to judge. My thanks to my hard working stewards, Lesley & Elizabeth, for keeping the ring running smoothly which made my day much easier. To all of the exhibitors for their entries & accepting my decisions with good sportsmanship.
Overall most of the dogs present had good clean teeth with correct scissor bite. All dogs were presented in a nice clean condition with good temperaments. Size on some of the minis needs to be watched, there were a few that were oversized. One thing I would point out is handling, if you are in a bigger class give yourself space on the group movement, it’s difficult for a judge to assess your dogs movement if you’re rushing up the back of the dog in front & having to slow down.

Puppy Dog 3/2 1st Taylor, Williams & Williams - Bulldaxit’s Armani My Way. 7 month old shaded red dog who was a happy & outgoing boy. Nice head but ears slightly long for my liking. Nice length of neck with a slight arch and good chest. Slightly long in loin & topline needs to firm up but this will come in time. Nice tidy feet and good rear angulation. Good power & movement round the ring & this clinched him BPIB on the day.

Post Graduate Dog 2 1st Sandell – Wanderhund Grand Illusion. 20 month old shaded red with nice conical head, good ears and almond eye. Long neck flowing into well laid shoulder with good tight feet. Nice topline with good length of ribbing & a short loin. Slightly under angulated on rear but moves well around the ring, reserve best dog. 2nd Heels - Daxanory Menacing Awesome. 2 ½ year old red with nice head, a prominent stop & correct almond eyes. Nice strong neck into shoulder which is a little upright. Would like to see more ground clearance. Lovely ribbing extending well back but loin is a little long. Moved freely round the ring but just preferred 1 for overall size & balance.

Open dog 2 1st Jennings – CH Marvale’s Manifesto At Jenivon. 3 ½ year old black & tan boy with good head, correct scissor bite & nice clean teeth. Nice shaped almond eye. Long slightly arched neck leading to good shoulder angulation and lovely prominent chest. Ample ribbing extending well back and a nice short loin leads to a topline held at all times. Good rear angulation & a sound mover. Best dog & only lost out on BOB as the bitch had slightly more drive in the challenge. 2nd Heels – CH Daxanory Menacing Dennis. 6 year old red with a nice shaped head and correct almond eye leading into a strong neck. Slightly heavy shoulder for my liking although correct angulation. Strong chest and good length of ribbing although loin is slightly long. Moves really well and still has plenty of drive despite nearly being a veteran and pushed 1 hard for the win today.
Veteran Dog 2 1st Cox – Dovestream Black Russian at Dachshinbull. 7 year old black and tan with good strong conical head and nice teeth. Correct ear set and lovely almond eyes. Long slightly arched neck flowing into correct shoulder & good front angulation. Slightly smaller in chest but good length of keel & good ribbing with a nice short loin. Good rear angulation and moved straight & true coming & going. Unfortunately on the day he was slightly underweight due to bitches in season at home, but pushed hard for reserve best dog & on another day would have been my choice for best veteran. 2nd Macdonald – Don Pedro II Das Terras Do Cannis Lupus. 7 year old red boy with correct conical head and good neck. A little unsettled & unwilling to move today giving his handler a hard time.
Puppy bitch 2/1 1st Kerry - Hampdach Belle Returns to Kireton. 7 month black and tan who is a nice happy girl. Correct conical head and lovely almond eye with good earset and nice long slightly arched neck. Correct shoulder and nice deep chest with good ribbing and short loin. Nice rear angulation and topline held at all times. Movement was ok on the day but in phantom at the time which wasn’t helping.
Junior bitch 2/1 1st Jennings - Melriding True Colours at Jenivon. 14 month black & tan with a good head and eye. Long neck flowing into correct shoulder placement with a nice deep chest. Good rib and loin with level topline. Moved ok.
Post Graduate bitch 3/1 1st Valentine - Empetthounds Genesis Into Tiffwazz. 2 year old black and tan with a correct conical head & good eye. Nice length of neck, good deep chest and good ribbing and length of loin. Good rear angulation and moved well, reserve best bitch. 2nd Heels - Daxanory Ravishing Rose. 2 ½ year old red girl with a nice head and eye. Would like a longer neck and heavy in shoulder but correct angulation. Moved ok.
Limit bitch 1 1st Cox - Bulldaxit Sooner or Later. 3 year old black & tan with a lovely head, great teeth & correct almond eye. Good long slightly arched neck into correct shoulder. Good deep chest with good ribbing, short loin & a level topline held at all times. Good rear angulation & moved well around the ring, strongly considered for RBB.
Open bitch 3/2 1st Chauhan - CH Hundpoint Mamma Mia. 2 ½ year old shaded red with a lovely shaped conical head, good strong teeth & correct almond eye. Moderately long, strong neck leading to good lay of shoulder. Good depth of chest & keel with nice long ribbing & a short loin. Good rear angulation and moved with real power & drive earning her BOB.
Veteran bitch 2/1 1st Valentine - Amlida Tamora to Tiffwazz. Nearly 8 year old black & tan with a great head and eye. Good length of neck leading into a strong shoulder & a nice deep chest. Perfect Rib to loin ratio. Moderate rear angulation but drives well despite age, BVIB.
