I would like to start by thanking the Club for inviting me to judge Miniatures Dachshunds and also BIS and Varieties. My thanks are also extended to the exhibitors for entering and giving me the opportunity to judge their dogs at this very friendly, and well organised, show. The varying light made it a little difficult at times to see everything I needed to meaning that I had to look longer than perhaps I would normally.

I was looking for a dog with the correct overall construction, correct muscular power and a correct bite to enable the dog to complete the function that it was originally bred for. However I did find a few with shorter muzzles to back skull proportions spoiling that conical effect from above, a few with rounded eyes and lacking in the length and angle of upper arm. Weights on the whole were very good with just a couple of bitches topping the scales after what was either a litter or a phantom.

Best In Showa lovely line up to choose from making for some close decisions but I finally gave the nod to;

Lewis Trixhund Hi De Hi J.W, S/LH who was turned out in excellent condition and moved very soundly around the ring. Liked the head proportions, sufficient neck length with strength, good lay to front assembly with prominent keel, and well ribbed back.  Nice depth of body with sufficient ground clearance, strong & well boned front legs & good feet, nice underline & topline into a good croup and tail set. Used her nicely angled rear end to advantage on the move.

Reserve Best In ShowDances Ch. Emen Constance Sunshine JW. who pushed the Standard very hard for the top spot. Very smart M/WH whose head proportions were pleasing, good length & strength of neck into a well laid shoulder & correct return of upper arm. Nicely boned throughout and good feet, good harsh coat, well ribbed back with correct length loin and good for body depth. Nice over the croup into good rear angles and moved out soundly.

Best Puppy In ShowMcCalmonts Silvae Fan Dancer gorgeous S/WH bitch puppy giving a super overall picture and moved out soundly for her age. Good head planes & bite, correct neck with strength into well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm & ample breastbone. Well ribbed back with correct length of loin, lovely depth for age and good under line and top line into correctly angled rear quarters used to advantage on the move.

Reserve Best Puppy In Show – Worswicks Dolyharp Sonatina – M/LH who was my BP and BOB. She has the sweetest expression, dark eyes and lovely head planes. Neck of sufficient length but with strength, nicely angled front quarters, good in bone & feet, she holds  a good topline & is well ribbed back with correct length of loin, a good underline with clearance and good from croup to tail. Rear quarters of good angulation, a steady mover for age.

Puppy D/B (2,0abs)

1st           Worswick – Dolyharp Sonatina;  BOB, BPIB & RBPIS

2nd          Wile- Xemxija Charm;  a real little fidget here not wishing to show her charms. Nice in head proportions, sufficient in neck for length & strength into nicely angled front but she needs to settle into this more especially on the move. Acceptable in underline and depth and length of ribbing, loin length and croup but just needs to settle into herself now.

Junior D/B no entries

Post Grad D/B (3, 1abs)

1st           Cox – Bronia Jelly Baby;  I would prefer perhaps a touch more length of muzzle she has sufficient length of neck with strength, shoulders well laid back with prominent breastbone & sufficient return of upper arm. Well ribbed back with good loin, under line and top line OK although she would keep standing a bit rear high here. Good for bone and feet, moved out well if just a touch close behind.

2nd          Latham-Jacskon – Urishay Heart N Soul;  I would prefer slightly more refinement in her head, good neck for length & strength, nice lay back of shoulder & upper arm, sufficient ribbing back & length of loin, well turned rear quarters & nice for bone & feet. Could have been a touch tidier on the up and back here.

Limit D/B (2,0abs)

1st           Norris – Criscan Missmia;  lovely head & expression on this bitch into a good length of neck. Lay of shoulder good and the angle of the upper arm but was slightly tight to the body making her stand not quite true here. Prominent breastbone, nice underline with sufficient clearance, good bone & feet, well ribbed back into good croup & tail set.  Moved out well & a close decision for BOB, gave her RBOB today.

2nd          Wallace – Willowheath Rebel Rock;  slightly larger package here but a male and  very similar remarks could apply as with the 1st in a lot of areas. Just felt that the back length & clearance was a little better on the 1st with a touch more balance evident. Overall angulation was good, long ribbing & croup to tail OK, stood back somewhat on his feet dropping his angle of pastern.

Open D/B (2,1abs)

1st           Latham-Jackson;  Dolyharp Purcell Of Urishay;  nice lad with good head planes and strong bite into a neck of sufficient length & strength. Good lay of shoulder & return of upper arm but just slightly tight fitting elbow to body. Good in top and under line with sufficient clearance, nice set to croup and tail set into well angled rear quarters. Good for bone & feet, moved out soundly.

Puppy D/B (11,3abs)

1st           Dunhill – Gellijams Lady Of The Night;  my notes say close decisions in this class but just felt that the clean lines of 1st was enough here. Overall good head planes & neck for length & strength into a well laid shoulder & a nice return of upper arm. She has a prominent breastbone for age & good top & under lines with good clearance. Well ribbed back, sufficient length of loin into a good croup & tail set. Moved out well for age.

2nd          Rose – Ardenrun Foolish Whisper;  did wonder if this was my winner at first sight but preferred the clean lines of the front of 1st today. Nice for head & expression, good length neck of strength into a well laid front but at this young age needs to settle into her front more. Nice length of back & ribbing, good in loin and croup with the start of a nicely rounded rump & good rear angles. Moved out well.

3rd           Beer – Stargang Frankly Magic At Lowrider.

Junior D/B (4, 1abs)

1st           Dunhill – Gellijams Midnight Affair;  litter brother to my puppy winner and for me quite raw still. Needs to develop just a bit more width in front, has a nice head set, good for length of neck with sufficient strength into a nicely laid shoulder blade & upper arm. Good for length of body & sufficient length of ribbing, good clearance under and a good set of croup to tail. Needs to just tighten in back movement at present but in the challenge just felt that he presented and moved himself a bit better than his litter mate. BPIB

2nd          Beer – Stargang Candy Stripes At Lowrider;  would prefer a touch more muzzle depth at present but with a nice length & strength of neck into an overall well angled front. Has a nice body length & ribbing, good under line & clearance into a sufficient croup & tail set. Just needs to settle into her frame more and tighten on her feet & movement.

3rd           Charlesworth – Keydax Peter Pan

Post Grad D/B (6,1abs)

1st           Hunt – Wolferlow George Brown At Carpaccio;  level in head planes with a good neck of length & strength, well laid shoulder blade & return of upper arm with prominent breast bone. Nice in length of back with good ribbing, has the depth of body & clearance into nicely angled rear quarters. Correct over the croup & tail set but just stood back a wee bit on pasterns here. Moved out soundly enough on nice feet but would prefer a touch more accuracy on the up and back.

2nd          Rose- Pennydach Mystique;  good in head planes & slight arch to neck which was of good length & strength. Well laid shoulders & sufficient return of upper arm but elbows quite tight to body therefore legs slightly turned out. Good in topline & sufficient length of ribbing, nice loin and reasonable croup to tail.  Could have slightly cleaner under lines, nicely angled rear quarters, moved out OK.

3rd           Beer – Charlinea Honeymoon Toast

Limit D/B (4, 0 abs)

1st           Ergis – Siouxline Rachel JW;  good in head & depth of muzzle, nice bite,  strength & length of neck but a touch of throatiness. Well laid shoulder blades with a good return of upper arm & elbows set well, well ribbed back and nice length of loin. Balanced top and under lines with clearance and good shape, well set tail . Curvy & strong rear quarters made for quite sound movement .BOB

2nd          Rudkins - Dynastydax Tiger Lily;  quite similar remarks could apply but not quite as straight in front moving up and back here.  Nice in head & expression, sufficient length of neck with strength, well angled front quarters and good length of body & ribbing. Good in top and under line with clearance, nice rounded rump and rear angles, good for bone & feet  but nails just a touch long today.

3rd           Charlesworth – Keydax Leroy

Open D/B (6,0abs)

1st           Hunts – Carpaccio Clarice Cliff;  good in head planes, expression & bite with a neck of length & strength with slight arch. Well laid shoulder blades & good for return of upper arm and prominent breastbone. Good length of back & well ribbed with nice loin, elbows set well and good under line with sufficient clearance . Nice croup set to tail and well angled rear quarters. Moved soundly but would prefer slightly tidier on the back end when moving. RBOB

2nd          Dunhill – Shantallah Shady Lady At Gellijam;  smart bitch with a good head & expression, nice bite  has a good neck with breadth. Well laid shoulder blades & good return of upper arm, well ribbed back with good length of loin. Good topline & body length but sadly today her under line did not have the cleanest of lines. Nice set of croup to her tail & well angled rear quarters. Moved out OK.

Puppy D/B (3,0abs)

1st           Kilroy – Blackvein Princess At Janacop;   Very smart youngster, good in head with good length of neck, has yet to strengthen a touch more. Lovely lay of shoulder & return of upper arm, good depth for age, well ribbed back into nice length loin, slight rise over back & coming into a well rounded rump and sound on the move BPIB

2nd          Mullen – Rozelle Kamiras’s Year;  another smart youngster and a lot of the comments above apply here but I just felt that I would prefer slightly better rear action and that the back skull needed to finish a touch more. However a lot can happen as maturity comes to these youngsters.

3rd           Watkins – Blackvein Marchioness

Junior D/B (5,0abs)

1st           Mills – Middleton Hunt At Oniasid;  smart red with good coat but slightly lacking furnishings. Good head planes of equal proportions, nice length & strength to neck, clean & well angled front, good depth and underline with clearance, well ribbed back & correct length of loin and well held topline ,nice rounded rear quarters and moved out soundly here. RBOB

2nd          Hoopers – Ravensbeech Rainshadow;  close decision between these two & another with good head planes, nice in neck for length & strength, clean forequarters with sufficient depth & well ribbed back. Good topline held moving into nicely angled rear quarters & good feet she moved out well.

3rd           Mullen – Rozelle Kamiras’s Year

Post Grad D/B (3,0abs)

1st           Howells – Blackvein Vixen At Fallowmill;  Felt that just a touch more leg & clearance would finish the picture, a good length of body which was well ribbed back with a nice length of loin. Nice in head but a tad more back scull would finish, neck of length & strength into a clean and well angled front & well ribbed back. Good rear angles but had the tendency to stand a wee bit close behind.

2nd          Clares – Drakesleat Helen Back To Mabellene;  more rangy, lengthy bitch with good depth and clearance, good lay of shoulder & return of upper arm but not quite the cleanlines in front  of 1st.  Long ribbing into good croup & rear angulation, moved out well.

3rd           Kilroy – Blackvein Cupid At Janacop

Limit D/B (2,0abs)

1st           Mullen – Starhill Flirty Girty;  Preferred the rear movement of this bitch and the shape of her eye. Good for head shape with sufficient length & strength of neck, nicely laid shoulder blades & return of upper arm & correct leg length. Well ribbed back with nice loin into decent croup & good rear angles. Just a touch of a rise over the top line needed to finish the picture.

2nd          Clare – Lordscairnie Love God;  thought this male might have been my winner here but felt that he needed to drive a wee bit more from the rear & not as clean under the hand as 1st. Good head planes but felt his eye shape could be a touch better, good for length & breadth of neck, has body depth & ribbed back, loin and croup OK but perhaps a touch more roundness over the rear needed.

Open D/B (2,0abs)

1st           Dance – Ch. Emen Constance Sunshine JW;  BOB and RBIS

2nd          Watkins – Brookliad Lady Morgan Le Fay Of Blackvein;  bitch with good, equal head planes, sufficient length and strength of neck, reasonably angulated front and rear, well ribbed back with nice length of loin and croup, moved out reasonably well but just lacking the parallel hind movement.

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee for inviting me to judge their standard variety of Dachshunds, thank you kindly to all the exhibitors who entered and of course thank you to my steward for doing a sterling job. Overall I found all dogs to be turned out in great condition with sound temperaments but some lacked pigment and some were just too narrow and with the exception of one all mouths were of correct bite. *DACHSHUND WIRE HAIRED: P* (6.2) 1. McCalmont’s Silvae Fan Dancer brindle bitch of just 6mths was an absolute stunner. Really stood out for me. Well made throughout nothing overdone which is nice to see. Head in proportion to body with cheeky expression set on a reachy neck flowing into good lay of shoulder. Good depth of chest with enough length of rib. Cracking angulation which she showed off on the move. Presented a good profile on the move and more impressively on the stack. Was very pleased to award this baby BPIB and was chuffed to see her go BPIS. 2 Bubb’s Wyeknot Dare To Dream brindle bitch of 9mths was a slightly larger girl than 1 but again showed herself well. A little more furnishings than 1 but not scruffy. Good head with correct eye. Reachy neck flowing into well laid shoulders.Well built chest and front assembly. Moved out well holding topline on the move and stack. 3 Frampton’s Bramalodge Babooshka at Drakkina. *J* (5) 1 Pughe & Fraser’s Bystock Best Mate dark brindle dog of just 6mths. Nicely compact without exaggeration. Good bone. At first he didn’t stand out but once it was his turn he really shone through. Loved his profile on the stack and move, a real showman in the making. Strong head and expression set on elegant neck and good lay of shoulder. Well filled chest and good spring of rib. Strong loin leading to a nicely angulated rear. 2 Matthew’s Stanegate Billy The Kid at Sonham a brindle dog of just 1yr. Smart boy, slightly longer than 1 but sturdy. Nice profile showing a strong head with enough furnishings. Nice reach of neck with ok chest. Well ribbed with good strong loin. Moved true coming and going with topline as it should be. 3 Rowe’s Boloria’s Aramis. *PG* (4.1) 1 Rowe’s Miss Dior chocolate bitch of 14mths. Well made girl of good proportions. Expressive feminine head with lovely elegant neck flowing into level topline. Nicely filled chest without it being overdone with good front assembly. Good spring of rib with a strong loin. Well muscled rear which she used to power round the ring. 2 Wheeler’s Waggington Aurora a dark brindle bitch of 21mths. Compact girl without exaggeration. Presents a good outline when stacked correctly. Head in proportion to body. Neck is ok. Good size chest with enough rib leading to a short loin. Well angulated front and back. Handler needs to be firmer and maybe some more ringcraft would be of use or a good mentor to get the best from this girl. 3 Frampton’s Weinacht Larch at Drakkina JW. *L* (3.1) 1 Adams’ Tecklegarth Gatling JW 20mths brindle dog big lad with bone to match. Good head and earset into good reach of neck. Excellent chest with good front angulation. Enough length of ribbing to hold this boys topline firm. Nicely angulated at rear which gave him good reach and drive RBOB. 2 Pughe & Fraser’s Ambiesque Ascertain at Bystock feminine brindle bitch just shy of 3yrs. Presents a good outline on the stack and move. Correct head and eye with elegant neck flowing into a level topline. Nice chest with good front assembly and good underline. Difficult two to judge as both were good specimens, just preferred 1’s overall picture. *O* (2) 1 Rowe’s Boloria’s Trick or Treat JW a 2yr old brindle bitch who was on good form. Compact girl without being overdone. Beautiful head and kind expression. just enough neck which sat on well muscled shoulders. Chest not exaggerated with good depth of keel. Ribs well sprung and short loin flowing into a cracking rear. definitely fit for function. Very pleased to award BOB. 2 McCalmont’s Silvae Trade Secret brindle bitch of over 2yrs. Impressive looking girl and flashy to match. Longer on the leg but all in proportion for size. Soft expression showing correct eye. Such an elegant neck into a firm topline. Good size chest without exaggeration and enough ground clearance for a days work. Moved out well around the ring with ease. Just preferred 1 today as presented a more pleasing picture

AV Veteran (3,0abs)

1st           Latham-Jackon – Ch Urishay Sweet Pea;  Miniature LH, she was good for head planes but age showing in her bite now, nice in neck length & strength flowing into well laid shoulder blades & good return of upper arm. Good top line with correct ribbing & loin, nice for under line with clearance and well angled rear quarters. Moved out well for her age. BVIS

1st           Wedge – Faulksfollie Miss Minaver At Dolans;  S/LH nice in head & good neck into a decent front of good angles with a good topline and sufficient clearance and underline, croup to tail appeared to drop a touch here today, nicely angled rear quarters.

1st           McCalmont – Silvae Sky Dancer;  S/WH smart youngster and not the easiest decision between first two.  Later see litter sister to my BPIS who again has a well angled front and rear, moved out very smartly but just felt that she needed to come together more into her frame as appeared to stand a little backend high here.

3rd           Wedge – Dolan Dock Of The Bay;  LH

Open Stakes D/B (7,3abs)
