Reserve Best in Show - WOOD'S Wildstar Wreward - Min Long
Best Puppy in Show - MELBOURNE, PAGET & CARROLL'S Melriding Cloak and Dagger - Min Smooth
Reserve Best Puppy in Show - ROWE'S Boloria's Nice N'Spicy - Wire
Best Veteran in Show - NORTON's Ch Matzell Minella - Smooth
After 15 months it was lovely to be able to attend a show once more and meet up with so many friends. The Dachshund Club had kindly invited me to judge BIS and the show was run very smoothly and efficiently and Covic rules applied. Apart from the 45 minutes of total monsoon just before Best in Show, and several exhibits being soaked, the weather improved in time for judging to go ahead in the dry, eventually. AV Sp Standard V (5, 3) Two very fit and well presented bitches. 1 Norton’s Ch Matzell Minella. Red, 7 years old Smooth-haired with good elegant lines. Pleasing head and eye, strong, good length neck into well laid shoulders, good keel and ribbing, strong on the move coming and going despite the very wet grass. Retained her topline throughout. BVIS, a worthy winner. 2 Mease’s Weaverwill Florin. Brindle, 13 yr old Wirehaired. Amazing for her age, good head and eye, strong neck and correct shoulders, sufficient keel, well ribbed, moved soundly behind, showing her age a little in front movement. Well muscled and presented in good condition.
AV Sp Miniature V (10, 9) 1 Standing alone, Woodvine-Shone’s Ir Ch Hanishan Classic Landing. Black and tan Miniature Longhaired. 11 yrs old with a pretty head and dark eye, presented in good coat, good topline and moved quite well, considering the conditions. Carrying weight over shoulder which made her a bit stuffy in neck, in good condition for her age.
Best in Show: Six very good exhibits presented themselves and I was impressed with the overall quality. My stand out winner though had to be the Longhaired Dachshund, Dare’s Darsoms Zymystique. An elegant young red bitch with the loveliest of heads with a dark eye and sweet expression, super construction throughout with plenty of keel and ribs going well back into strong hindquarters. In spite of being soaked through, her coat was in very good condition.
Reserve BIS, the Miniature Longhaired Dachshund, Woods’ Wildstar Wreward. Well made throughout. Black and tan male, lovely head and eye, strong neck into well laid shoulders, good keel, specially for a Miniature and very good topline both standing and on the move. In good coat. BPIS: The six puppies presented were of differing quality. My winner and Reserve BPIS I thought were of lovely type with, I am sure, bright futures. 1 Melbourne, Pagett & Carroll’s Melriding Cloak And Dagger. Black and tan 8 mth dog. He has a super head and eye, elegant neck with well laid shoulders and sufficient keel, tight feet, super topline and front movement in the wet grass was very true considering. He could be a little stronger in hock but overall a quality puppy. Reserve BPIS, the Wirehaired bitch, Boloria Nice’N Spicy. Very balanced and of correct size, not too big. Lovely head and strong neck into well laid shoulders, sufficient keel, good ribbing, good feet, strong on the move. Close up to the winner. In excellent coat. Vivien Phillips

What a pleasure to be back in the show ring! A well run show, let down by the weather towards the end of the afternoon by the monsoon which had been looming. Thank you to the officers and committee for the invitation, and to the exhibitors for their tolerance of some difficult conditions and the delays caused by the inevitable demands of the championship show. Overall the exhibits showed rather profuse coats, a few stained teeth (tut, tut), ribbing was lacking in many and movement not great with parallel action shown by the minority.
Minor Puppy: (2 entries, 1 absentee) 1. Fossett’s Brysdax Skyfall, 7 month old red girl, a little nervous, good coat, pleasing feminine head, good almond shaped eye, decent length of neck, excellent front, a little short in ribbing, tight feet, good top line, rear angulation limited and lacking in parallel movement.
Puppy Dog: (3, 2) 1. Clarke’s Tekalhaus The Excelsior, 11 month old shaded red boy, coat rather profuse, masculine head, good eye, reasonable front, good shoulders and ribbing, neck a bit short, moved confidently, pleasing side on but movement too close especially when viewed from the rear.
Puppy Bitch: (4, 1) 1. Negus’s Tarramist Vesper Lynd, 11 month old girl, shaded red, pleasing feminine head, good eye, tight feet, strong front, reasonable ribbing, moved well with confidence, front movement on approach better than going away, BP 2. Negus’s Tekalhaus Cartier Diamond by Tarramist, 11 month old shaded red girl, a little nervous and grumbly, pleasing head and eye, but lacking in prosternum and length of neck and could do with more ribbing, good top line, rather close moving away, better coming to, and not the movement overall of 1 3. Foley’s Loggeta Wynn By Miles
Junior Dog/Bitch: (3, 0) 1. Vincent’s Dolan Save The Last Dance for Gainscroft 17 month old shaded red dog, nice size, good head and eye, reasonable front and shoulders, decent ribbing and hindquarters, moved well 2. Hayes’ Swansford Clusterdor mit Dialhouse, 13 month old shaded red dog, very mature for his age, masculine head, profuse coat, good tight feet, looked better stacked than on the move and preferred to sit than stand 3. Linacre’s Swansford Carazonador
Novice Dog/Bitch: (4, 2) 1. Callow’s Garthorne Charlotte, 3 year old shaded red bitch, good size, feminine head, good eye, could have more front, reasonable ribbing, level top line, reasonable movement but rather close together when moving away 2. Vincent’s Metadale Monica at Gainscroft, two year old shaded red bitch, very feminine head, reasonable front, a bit loose at elbow, decent ribbing, good top line, rear drive let her down
Post Graduate Dog/Bitch: (7, 0) Cheese’s Ranglewood Titania at Suecaseus, 21 month old red bitch, very feminine, good size and correct straight coat, good eye, decent ribbing, tight feet, moved well, in fact better than most and would have been a candidate for reserve bitch had there been such an award 2. Paskins’ Kindeace Texas Ranger, 23 month old red dog, good straight coat, well constructed front, good length of neck, decent ribbing, good angulations, moved well and a close second 3. Burke’s Bonavoir into the Future 4. Fossett’s Brysdax Mama Mia 5. Callow’s Garthorne Graduation Girl
Open Dog: (6, 3) 1. Garlick’s Ranglewoood Arashi, shaded red dog, now a veteran, good shoulders and front construction, tight feet, decent ribbing, good angles all round, moved well for a 7 year old and deserved his BoS award 2. Negus’s Tarramist Iron Man, another veteran boy, shaded red, lovely head and eye, rather profuse coat, good top line, front movement coming to not as good as class winner 3. Garlick’s Harvest Song
Open Bitch: (9, 2) 1. Dare’s Darsom’s Zymistique, 23 month old shaded red bitch, beautifully balanced, excellent size, very feminine, correct front and shoulders, good ribbing, good top line, moved really well, and stood out above the rest, BoB and delighted to see her given BiS 2. Burke’s Ch Bonavoir Ermintrude, 4 year old shaded red bitch, good neck and front, good feet and top line, moved well but not quite with the grace of class winner 3. Geeson’s Abeydachs Fire in her Soul 4. Garlick’s Ranglewood Trick or Treat 5. Dare & Guy’s Darsoms Zindi

THE DACHSHUND CLUB
SUB-GROUP OPEN SHOW
It was a pleasure to judge for my own club (The Dachshund Club), and I want to thank the officers and committee for inviting me to judge at Nottingham. Many thanks to all the exhibitors for their co-operation and making the day very enjoyable. I also want to thank the very helpful stewards for making my role a lot more straightforward. It was a memorable and incredibly enjoyable show, after such a long and stressful period of time in the pandemic.
Initially I was thinking that the dogs would put up a change in temperament due to such a long time in self isolation with very little means of socialisation, but to my surprise, the dogs were all very friendly as if covid never came round. Credit to all the exhibitors who have taken care of the dogs and kept them company which has prevented such issues from occurring. Almost all of the exhibitors were very positive and respectful during the judging process and the very small minority that could not appreciate my judging had little impact on me, as I was enjoying myself so much.
Miniature wire haired dachshunds.
Minor Puppy Dog/Bitch (8, 5 Abs) 1.Mrs L Sexton’s . Molloney Noodle Not A Doodle. What a beautiful puppy with the ideal wire hair coat. I would like to thank the officers and committee for inviting me to judge at their first show back. I was very pleased with my entry so thank you to all who entered under me. Also I’d like to thank my fabulous stewards who were very on the ball. Sadly, even after such a long time away from the shows there were quite a few in poor condition with either extremely long nails, obvious skin conditions and even dirty. When showing your dogs its important to turn them out in as best condition as possible.
MP. (5,2). 1. Andison & Peel’s Clentry All Ways Russian 7mth old pretty brindle
bitch. Nice compact baby with feminine houndy head. Slightly finer than my no.2
but it just added to her femininity. Correct eye, lovely reach of neck to meet
well placed shoulders. Good fore chest with good depth of keel. Good angulation.
Parallel coming and going. Although a little unsettled on the move as lots were
today, she had a good outline. I think once she’s finished maturing she will be
very smart. Pleased to award her BP. 2. Locke’s Lauralee The American Dream 6mth
old black
and tan bitch. She’s a good solid puppy with lots of bone. Correct head with
enough reach of neck. Well laid shoulders and good depth of chest. Nicely
compact and moved with drive. Excellent coat. She was a little bum high as was
no.1 but her tail set was just a little higher than no.1. I’m looking forward to
seeing how she matures. 3. Hinwoods Adnerbs Sheer Nanigans.
J(5,3). 1. Andison & Peel’s The Hinks dream Twizzlers (IMP ESP) shaded red 17mth
dog. Well constructed boy with lots to like. Strong head on a lovely reachy
neck. Had a good prominent chest. Well angulated front and back. Ribbing well
back with a strong loin. Loved his outline on the stack and go, although he
played his handler up but on the occasions he walked properly he stood out for
me. 2. McNaughton's Cedavoch Quenya 15mth old black and tan bitch. Another
nicely compact girl without exaggeration. Good head with almond shape eyes. Good
depth of
chest and enough ribbing. Good angulation front and back. She lost out to no.1
as for me she didn’t have enough reach of neck.
N. (6,2). McNaughton’s Cedavoch Finwe 15mth old shaded red dog. I liked this boy far more than his litter sister in previous class. Rich mahogany red boy of good proportions without being over done. Lovely houndy head with correct eye placed on a reachy neck. Good sized chest and depth of keel. Well ribbed with short loin. Well muscled body. Correct fore and aft. Really nice tight feet. 2. Macdonald’s Bensarka Limerick 2yr old shaded red dog. Strong head, correct eye and ear set. Good reach of neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Prominent chest and good depth of keel. Well ribbed with good strong loin. Well muscled body and lovely tight feet. Lost out today as I just preferred the head and tail set on my no.1. 3. Robertson’s Rijobeau Jack the Lad.
PG. (13,2). 1.Norton’s Matzell Martinella Shaded red bitch of 2yrs. This bitch stood out for me as soon as I saw the line up. Feminine head on good reach of neck flowing into well placed shoulders. Good bone which made for a solid made bitch. Good depth of chest and well ribbed into a strong loin. Well angulated front and back and moved true foe and aft, was very pleased to award her BOB. 2. Paget & Carroll’s Marvale Violette Szabo black and tan bitch 22mths old. Slightly finer than no.1 but it just made her more feminine. Good reach of neck. Deep chest. Body not overdone although tum a little saggy from possibly having a phantom. Well angulated and carried her tail correctly on the move. Lost out today as I just preferred overall body and shape of my no.1. 3. Locke’s Lauralee Air Force One.
OD. (3,1). 1.
Andison & Peel’s Clentry Tainted Love 2yr old shaded red dog. A little unsettled
but stood like a pro. Well constructed dog with masculine head. Reachy neck.
Lovely outline. Muscled body. Well angulated front and back. Enough ribbing and
strong loin. Tight feet. Looking forward to seeing
more of him. Well deserved BOS. 2. Balazs-Hirt’s Colocensis Rex Mister at
Gravelous (IMP HUN) 5yr old shaded red dog. Lovely profile on the stack. Strong
head on moderate reach of neck. Lots of chest on this mature boy. Well muscled.
Ribbing not as long as no.1’s. Lost out due to
condition today.
OB. (2,1). 1. Valentine’s Tiffwazz Robin 6yrs old
black and tan bitch. Stood alone. Feminine bitch. Lovely reach of neck. Good
depth of chest. Well bodied. Moved soundly. Unfortunately she was a little
nervous and played her handler up. Presented in good condition.

padded . Showed good drive on the move and enough reach to win the class
2: Cumberland’s Mumysami Truly Scrumptious (B) Unfortunately not behaving today
, although given the lack of opportunity to socialise and train youngsters this
can be forgiven . Another nice youngster with a lot to like , pretty head eye
set obliquely, a nice shape when stacked strong topline and well muscled
hindquarters good bone .
N (16,6)

1: Andison& Peel’s Clentry Donnie Darco (D) Nice head and expression masculine
without being too strong , long neck well placed shoulders , prominent forechest

Everything in moderation in this dog with a touch of style and good bone . Moved
with a positive action showing good balance and covering the ground effortlessly
pleased to award him BOB
2: Beer’s Stargang Candy Stripes at Lowrider (B) Another nice youngster who will
have missed out on being shown . Again I don’t think the uneven ground was doing
this dog any favours she just lost out on the more positive action of the first
on the move .good head strong jaw but feminine prominent forchest well ribbed
tight elbows and strong quarters BOS

I thoroughly enjoyed my day judging one of my favourite breeds, a breed I have lived with for most of my life. Thanks must go to the committee for pulling out all the stops to enable the show to go on and it was a relaxed and well organised affair. Even the heavy downpour did not dampen our spirits. Thanks go to the exhibitors for a tremendous entry and after a long day at the previous show, I am grateful to those who stayed, and the dogs who, despite some of the youngsters being tired, seemed to enjoy their day.
Minor Puppy D or B (12, 3)
1. Rowe’s Boloria Nice ‘n Spicy 8 months bitch feminine head good length of neck leading into well laid back shoulders and return of upper arm. Correct prosternum and depth of keel, and length of rib. Would prefer a tad better length of second thigh but she moved soundly and balanced with good reach and drive in profile and coming and going, keeping a level topline. Correct harsh coat. Handled and showed well. BP and RBPIS.
2. Matthews’ Sonham Saucy Saffron only 6 months, just my type with super head and almond eye. Good length of neck leading into correct shoulders and well developed forechest and depth of keel. Good length of rib and correctly angled hindquarters. Level topline. Lovely temperament. She was tired after her long day which you would expect at this tender age, which reflected in her movement. Just needs to firm all through. Should have an exciting future.
3. Pughe and Fraser’s Bystock Tina Turner
Puppy D (1,0)
1. Lerego’s Tecklegarth Pike Milligan really lovely mature 10 months boy who looked super stacked on the table, masculine head with almond eye, good length of neck. Super front angulation with well developed forechest and depth of keel. Rather heavy over the shoulders, but actually was balanced with the rest of him, level topline, good length of rib and super strong rear quarters with short hocks. Fabulous coat. Presented and showed well. Would prefer a little more ground clearance.
Puppy Bitch (9, 2)
1. Gibson’s Allfreys Cordelia 11 months bitch with best coat of the class. Feminine head with correct almond eye, good neck and shoulders, level topline and strong well angulated rear. Good length of rib. Could benefit from losing a couple of pounds which I’m sure she will as she grows up. Balanced stacked and on the move.
2. Pughe and Fraser’s Bystock Tina Turner Lovely bitch of flowing lines, handled well on the table with correct front, forechest, level topline and rear. Not quite as positive on the move and coat rather soft in places.
Junior D/B (9, 1)
1. Hutchings Collidach Brook Ling 15 months red bitch. Lovely shape with good neck, well laid back shoulders and return of upper arm, well pronounced sternum, good length of keel, good length of ribcage and level topline, super hindquarters with excellent angles and short hocks which she certainly used on the move powering around the ring with reach and drive. Would like slightly more ground clearance and was in her undies today. Lovely temperament.
2. McCalmont’s Silvae Timeless, 12 months bitch, just my cup of tea with super conical head and dark almond eye. The best front assembly of the day, good depth of keel and length of ribcage, level topline and well angulated rear, with correct tail set on and carriage. Good ground clearance, balanced height to length ratio. Harsh coat texture and well presented. Super outgoing and happy temperament. However she was not 100% sound in her rear movement at times today. Such a pity.
3. Apps’ Calico Just Me
Novice D/B (11,4)
1. Betts’ Raneiro Born To Stand Out, 2 year old male, masculine and balanced, with correct front assembly complimented by strong, well angulated hindquarters, good length of rib and level topline. Would prefer more ground clearance. Moved with reach and drive both coming and going and in profile.
2. Barnes Imthurn’s Lunestrella Vega Sunny 2 year old bitch of correct type, feminine head with alert expression. Harsh coat which was well presented. Moved well.
3. Binks, Tannahill Paris
Post Graduate D/B (11, 5)
1. McPherson’s Brumberhill Biscotti 2 year old quality bitch with super outline. Conical head with almond eye, good length of neck leading into correct front assembly, well developed forechest and good depth of keel with ribs well back. Level topline and well angulated hindquarters. Super coat presented well. Moved out well in profile. Just a tad narrow all through.
2. Hunt’s Weinacht Larch at Drakkina JW 2 year old male. Nice shape and handled well on the table. Rather long and low for my taste and would prefer more ground clearance.
3. Arthurs’ Elderkine Rumours
Open Dog (8, 2)
Some super males in this class.
1. Phillips’ Royal Pepper’s Vice Versa (Imp Fin) 3 year old, masculine head good length of neck, well laid back shoulders, would like a little more length of upper arm, scored in length of rib and depth of keel. Level topline and adequate bend of stifle. Wide pelvis with strong rear quarters. Super coat quality and presentation. Sound as a pound on the move, parallel footfall coming and going and balanced in profile. BOB
2. Pughe and Fraser’s Bystock Big Bucks I really liked this quality boy and he was close up to 1. Different type from 1 but quality masculine head with correct almond eye. Correct front depth of keel and length of rib with well angulated rear. Good coat which was well presented. Would prefer more ground clearance and was not so positive in rear movement going away from me but really powered around the ring in side profile.
3. Adams’ Teckelgarth Gatling
Open Bitch (8,3)
1. McPherson’s Brumberhill Bellisima 6 year old bitch of much quality presented in hard muscular condition and the best of coats. Feminine head. Long neck leading into well laid back shoulders with good return of upper arm, excellent depth of keel and length of rib. Strong well angulated rear. Good tail set and carriage. Moved well coming and going and in profile. BB
2. Moore and Downes’ Megline Bohemian Rhapsody Lovely young bitch of high quality. Just my type of head, conical in shape with lovely almond eye. Super front assembly and forechest with good length of rib, level topline and well angulated rear with short hocks. Good tail set and carriage. False pregnancy which detracted from underline and not as firm in muscular condition today. Will trouble the best. Super temperament.
3. Gibson’s Allfreys Helena
