Eastern Counties Dachshund Association Open Show  7th November 2021
I would like to thank the ECDA committee for giving me the opportunity to judge the Veteran class and Best in Show and Best Puppy in Show at their Open Show.  I felt there was a great atmosphere at the show due to the hard working happy committee, lovely food,  good raffle and everyone entering into the old spirit of showing without being held back with too many Covid restrictions.  It was also good to hear a lot of the dogs and their owners receive applause.  Long may it last.

AV VETERAN 8 (1)All veterans were shown in terrific condition and all had clean teeth – cleaner teeth than you often see in the breed classes.  They were all a credit to their owners so I was spoilt for choice and especially difficult as there was quite a span in their ages.  So sorry they didn’t receive their usual reward of a sausage but unfortunately the committee member supplying them was taken ill on the morning of the show.  No, she hadn’t eaten the sausages! It was a close final decision between the very sprightly eleven and a half year old min smooth, the good coated St. Wire and the elegant St. Long.  Their overall movement was the deciding factor.1  Eldred’s Bramalodge Amiety at Derdledash  Although only just coming up to 8 years old and one of the youngest veterans this St. Wire couldn’t be denied her placing today.  An honest bitch of good breed type and looked as if she could still do a day’s work.  Noticed she was bred from European parentage so although feminine she had the workmanlike appearance that they like over there.  Pleasing feminine head and eye, good length and strength of neck flowing into well placed shoulders and harsh coated and well muscled body of correct proportions.  Ideally I would have liked to have had a little more length to upper arm  but she had a  firm topline in stance and on the move.  She moved out soundly and strongly with her owner.  Well deserved her placing today.2  Paskins’ Ch. Abydachs Summer Dream at Kindeace ShCM   Another well presented and elegant  St. Long  still showing at 11 years why she is a worthy champion.  Attractive feminine head and eye, good reach of neck flowing into a well covered body with a well presented coat.  Good angulation fore and aft.  Another with a good topline in stance but  she  looked as if she was enjoying her day in the show ring so much she consequently moved over enthusiastically losing her topline and her true movement.3 Cross’ Stargang Sansa – Miniature Smooth

BEST IN SHOW Wood’s Ch. Wildstar Wrivera Another close decision between BIS and RBIS. Two lovely exhibits. I was told later that both dogs had recently achieved champion status.  Congratulations.For BIS I chose the elegant Miniature Long who was so well handled and presented and great to go over.  Everything is correct under that well groomed coat.  Lovely feminine head and eye, good length of neck,  correctly placed shoulders and well covered body of the right proportions and size. Well angulated both ends which enabled her to move out strongly with her handler still keeping a firm topline.  One to be proud of breeding from well known champion parents.  Clever breederRESERVE BEST IN SHOW Cross’ Trouble in TexasAnother quality exhibit who was presented and shown so well.  Very close decision but just preferred the head of the mini as I felt the Standard was a little broad over the skull for me. Elegant, good coated Standard Long dog with masculine head, good reach of neck  flowing into correct shoulders. Well muscled, sound body with good spring of rib and good angulation fore and aft.  Covered the ground well, retaining a firm topline. Another exhibit which was so well handled and presented.  Newcomers to the breed should, in my opinion, take note from these experienced breeders and handlers on how to present and handle dogs in the ring..

BEST PUPPY IN SHOW Dance’s Emem Letty Bee SunshineAll the puppies today, miniature and standard, were very immature and some of course need lots more time to develop and also time to practice their showing skills to show off their attributes.  I’m sure this is due to not being able to socialise properly due to Covid.I chose the cheeky 7 month old Miniature Wire for top spot today because she has everything there ready to blossom and hopefully take after her mother Ch Emem Constance Sunshine.  Nothing fazed her even when one of the puppies became overzealous towards her.  Her handler managed the situation well.  Compact, good coated and well covered young lady with feminine head and eye, correct shoulders  and good general body outline.  Moved out well with her handler and was full of exuberance.  One to watch for the future.  Well deserved her award.RESERVE BEST PUPPY IN SHOW  Protheroe’s  Ginco Mikey Boots by RoyalmapleThis 10 month Miniature Smooth was a completely different type to the best puppy but couldn’t be denied his placing today.  Strong masculine head and good length of neck flowing down to correct shoulders.  Good forechest and longer cast body than the best puppy but a beautiful black coat with strong tan markings.  A raw youngster, still proud of his tail when moving and his handler having to restrain him on the move due to his happy disposition which he mustn’t lose. Plenty of time to calm down and to grow into himself.  Better to be like that than crawl round the ring with his
