DACHSHUND - LONG HAIRED
There was a good turnout of dogs which was
a pleasure to go over, in some classes overall quality was not good, and in
others quality was very good which meant leaving some good dogs cardless. I
don't like big Dachshunds has everyone knows but I will not put up a small one
if the quality is not there. Some years ago standard longs got very large,
indeed I was quite shocked on seeing some of them lumbering around the ring.
But credit to the breeders size came back down again and when I returned to
showing again a few years ago it was on the whole quite good. However in more
recent times size has been creeping back in. Breeders may argue that size is
not important if its a good quality dog. That's all very well in theory but in
practice I find they are often course and lack a lot of the true quality of a
smaller well balanced one. I had such a dog in one of the class's.
OD I must mention which epitomizes what I have been saying is
Ch.Abydachs Oh What A Night, although not well placed to day, he was showing is
age and up against a lot of young strong competition. I have given him a CC
before have used him and consider him a well balanced correct size dog is a top
winning dog and if used well could do a lot for the breed. One thing that
always puzzles me is how little some of the top winning males are used at stud
I know we are only a numerically small breed but I am sure we could all benefit
by trying something new. I felt that a lot of the dogs I placed had a lot to
offer the breed, and unlike some breeds we are fortunate in so far as the breed
does not have hereditary defects, which means we can afford to experiment a
little.
