VHC: BRADLEY Metadale My Decision
Many thanks to the Joint and my
steward, Annette, for an enjoyable day back with the variety that has played
such a large part in my life for so long. I last judged them four and a half
years ago; I don't watch them or read critiques before I judge and I was
pleasantly surprised with what I found. Good to see that they still have
that lovely "laid-back Long" temperament but, sadly, many still have that
distrust of floors that they perceive to be either shiny or slippery - some
things never change! Fronts were a lot more satisfying than I expected, but
rears still leave a lot to be desired - always the hardest part to get
right. Most were sound enough moving although not so many moved with any
length of stride or rear-wheel drive - but how much of that was down to the
floor or the dislike of moving towards a blank wall? Bitches impressed more
than dogs, and I was pleased with my final line-up of girls. The veterans in
both sexes more than held their own in this longest-lasting of varieties and
I was pleasantly surprised how few absentees there were. Most heads were
acceptable, fewer are narrow through the front and most are cleaner over the
elbows. Body properties were mostly good but some long in loin and some
bigger and heftier than required - often covered by an over-profuse coat.
Very few were light in bone, but some failed in depth of feet. All were
presented in clean, wholesome condition and all exhibitors were gracious in
the acceptance of their placings except one who should be setting a better
example to the newer and younger ones! Having been without one for over two
years now, I appreciated getting to grips with them again - thank you.
MPD (3) 1 Hirst's Ranglewood Lantana At Kejana. 7 months b/t who is a well
grown puppy with pleasing head, good bone, feet, topline and general
proportions and a pleasing prospect. 2 Street & Toft's Ranglewood Lawsonia.
Red litter brother. Similar remarks apply and I preferred this one's better
length of ribbing and shoulder but he is far less ready for the ring. Both
scored in leg length over third. 3 Pankhurst's Marshwick Red Prince. PD (4,
1) 1 Horn's Darsoms Zabbi. A biggish red of nearly 11 months who had easily
the best shoulder and length of ribbing. Good bone and feet and a quality
coat. Could just stride out a little more to advantage. Best Dog Puppy. 2
McNaughton's Cedavoch The Alchemist. Red of nearly a year with more freedom
behind but a bit upright in front. Best freedom of movement in class and
well let down rear but moved very closely behind. A difficult choice between
the first two. 3 Dare's Darsoms Zamson. JD (3) All red litter brothers. 1
Dare & Guy's Darsoms Zimbro. Red just turned a year. A big lad who makes an
impressive picture. Good clean wrinkle-free legs, good bone and feet, well
bodied just a shade high behind at this stage but is a free and easy mover.
The whole picture enhanced by a coat that is not too profuse and of a
beautiful quality. Rodrigues' Darsoms Zantor. Another big handsome lad with
good neck, substance and style. A bit long in body but moved well and it
will be interesting to see how they all end up. 3 Duchesnes' Darsoms Zamba
Of Scandell. YD (3) 1 Lewis' Trixhund Euphoria. Much darker shaded red.
Lovely and clean over the elbows and better layback of shoulder and length
of ribbing. Compact body with good length of keel and moved well keeping a
good width between his legs. 2 Geeson's Abydachs Seize The Night. Red of a
nice type who scored in head and neck and I preferred his coat but not as
good in front and feet. A pleasing type making for a difficult choice but
not quite as impressive on the move. 3 Fossetts' Brysdax Jack's Back.
PGD (5) 1 Marks' Labbadax Higher Than Hope. Classy clear red with lovely
coat quality. Good head, body proportions, shoulders, ribbing and topline.
Showed well and moved freely presenting a lovely picture. 2 Dunbar &
McNaughton's Daamistico Kamali. Dark shaded red of good head and type and
moved acceptably. Just falls off a bit over rear, but a very nice dog who
obviously doesn't realise yet how good he is and I hope he perks-up and
learns to project himself more. 3 Garlick's Ranglewood Arashi. LD (6) 1
Roberts' Swansford Warrador. Quality red dog of good type with well-made
body and good construction. Moved freely and well on good feet. Falls off a
little behind and is one of those infuriating "sinkers". Nevertheless a good
winner of the class and sire of the Best Dog Puppy. 2 McNaughton's Teckel
Rumour Has It. A darker red Canadian import of neat size and a good
all-rounder who put up a good show. Just a bit square over the rear but
otherwise a lot to like. 3 Pankhurst's Marshwick Black Boots. OD (5, 1) 1
Hutton's River Rumpus Through Dachalune. Fully-finished five and a half year
old b/t dog who really knows how to show himself off - moving freely and
showing with great style and enthusiasm. A very handsome dog who obviously
knows it and knows how to project himself plus a handler who knows when to
let him take charge. Everything is in balance with good head, neck, bone,
feet, shoulders, length of rib and hard topline. Very pleased to make him
my CC winner and delighted to hear it was his third. Best Opposite Sex. 2
Marks' Ch Royal Warrier Via Labbadax. 6 year old shaded red dog who was my
Res CC winner last time and still fits the bill. Not one of the glamour boys
but such an honest dog of a pleasing size and type who is well made all
round with a good head, neck and construction and the best hind movement of
the day amongst the males. 3 Huttons' Rolo Rascal Over Dachalune. VD (4) 1
Sutton's Damai Master Benedict. Ten and a half year old b/t who put up his
usual sound and solid performance - surely one of the uncrowned champions of
the variety. I gave him Junior nine years ago and he has just gone on
getting better. A very handsome b/t whose depth of colour hasn't faded and
he still moves with enthusiasm on lovely clean legs and feet keeping a hard
topline and he can freestand immaculately. Well made all round and worthy
winner of the Res CC. 2 Dare's Ch Bronia Salvador Of Darsoms. A mere
stripling of seven and a half, and another who belies his years as a good
Long male should. A shaded red with a good body and well let down rear he
knows how to use. His topline is still hard and he moved well although not
quite the aplomb of the winner but completed a duo that stood away in this
class and well able to see off the youngsters. 3 Burke & Manstons' Loggeta
John Collins. MPB (2) 1 Garlick's Ranglewood Laurel. Litter sister to the
two little boys, obviously a nice litter. Nice type with lovely clean
wrinkle free legs and good feet. A well made little body and she moves
freely and well. 2 Fossett's Africandawns Night Lover. A month younger at
six and a half months and far less ready quite naturally. Pleasing head and
smooth over the elbows but just needs to let down into her angulation.
PB (4) 1 McNaughton's Cedavoch Jadis. Dark shaded red litter sister to The
Alchemist and a very pleasing puppy of a lovely neat size and very well made
all through being all of a piece both standing and on the move. Would prefer
larger feet but she stands well on them and has a good shoulder. Moved very
freely and well to win Best Puppy. 2 Clarke's Tekalhaus Million To One. Very
stylish red girl celebrating her birthday. Another of neat size and good
type with a quality coat. Very free and eager moving and puts so much into
her showing which tends to be her undoing as she goes around so
enthusiastically she tends to throw her head back and straighten her front.
To coin a phrase: calm down dear! 3 Metcalfe-Bilgin's Garthorne Going Home
To Metadale. JB (5) 1 Dare & Guy's Darsoms Zangel. Litter sister to the
Junior dog and making a very nice pair. Dark shaded red with good bone and
feet, very clean through the front with no protrusions. Good head and
carriage and good body and movement. Like him, she just needs to let down
behind with maturity. 3 Marks' Labbadax High Hopes. Clear red litter sister
to the Post-Grad. Dog and another of great quality and lovely type, but she
hated the floor. Better let down behind than the winner at this stage but
not as good in feet. Two lovely girls. 3 Dunbar & McNaughton's Dawn Trader.
YB (1) 1 Cheese's Suecaseus Juliet. B/t in super coat and condition. Good
head and well bodied but moves rather close in front and straight behind.
PGB (6, 1) 1 Garlick's Ranglewood Tempest. Rich deep red who is pleasing
for head and neck carriage, well made front and a lovely eager mover. Would
just prefer a better let-down rear but a quality bitch of nice type. 2 Booth
& Elsley's Labbadax Gimme Gimme Gimme At Abbalongdat. Another red with good
depth of colour built on clean lines and pleasing for head and body
properties. Just needs to make more of herself on the move but preferred her
feet to the third. 3 Marks' Labbadax Feisty Empress. LB (6, 1) Rather
disappointing class for Limit, particularly for hindquarters. 1 Paskins'
Kindeace Rita Ora. Pleasing type of clear red with style and substance.
Good head, bone, feet and body properties. She's a free and willing mover
who just tends to fall off a shade over the rear. 2 Garlick's Ranglewood
Idesia. Smaller head to body ratio, but well bodied with particularly good
length of ribbing. Moved acceptably but another who could make more of
herself to advantage. 3 Eve's Dachslur Mari My Dream. OB (9, 2) The class
that provided the toughest competition of the day. 1 Marks' Ch Labbadax
Belladonna. 4 year old red of really lovely type and quality, very classy
lady with good head and a neck that flows smoothly into her topline. Well
let down behind and moves so freely and well - in fact I loved everything
about her except for her rather flat feet otherwise things might have
ended-up quite differently. Nevertheless she was still very good value for
the Res CC and Reserve BOB. 2 Dare's Ch Swansford Nigelladora Swansford.
Smaller 20 months red and another nice one by the Limit Dog winner. All of a
piece, well angulated both ends and moving well both ways. Beautifully
presented in just the right body weight and pushed the winner all the way.
Better feet but not quite the charisma of the older finished article. Two
lovely girls followed by others that pushed hard. 3 Garlick's Ranglewood
Justica. VB (5) 1 Dare's Ch Darsoms Zienna. 7 year old red and another
top-flight bitch who made the going tough for the younger ones and, at this
stage, I hadn't realised she would end up my ultimate winner. Once again,
all of a piece, well constructed both ends and with all parts fitting neatly
and a nice flow down her neck and along her topline. Neat size, well made
body with a good forechest and all covered by a correct and not over profuse
coat. Gave nothing away to the younger girls and I was pleased to finish
with her as my CC and Best of Breed. 2 Chapman's Darsoms Ziana At Melminds.
Her litter sister and an old favourite I've judged twice before and regarded
highly - another I feel has been hard-done-by not to carry a title. Good for
length to height properties, another good forechest, the right construction,
lovely flat coat and moved very well. The same remarks apply - two lovely
girls and that mix of Zuave and Playgirl certainly bore fruit. 3 Booth &
Elsley's Ch Abbalongdat Ms Voulez Vous. Another I've judged a couple of
times before and given a Res CC as a puppy.
