Many thanks to the Midland Club for a lovely day, and for my super stewards, Lynn and Gordon. Thank you exhibitors for your lovely entry and your patience when I forgot what I was doing during Best Dog Puppy! Partnership shows are good for societies and exhibitors – but are they good for our dogs? It was a warm, wet and oppressive day and some dogs were lethargic, especially in the challenge after sparkling in their class. I have found the partnership shows I have attended this year exhausting and I just wonder if we are neglecting to consider the effect on our dogs? Now to the dogs. Whether it has a smooth, long or wire coat the standard is exactly the same for each variety - and I was trying to find the best dachshund with a long haired coat. If I mentally removed the coat from some otherwise excellent exhibits I could not see the dachshund outline I was looking for. There is still a problem with upright shoulders, short upper arms, and long loins.Bitches were much better than dogs in this respect. Today I had great difficulty in assessing ribbing on many exhibits as they were too fat – I would estimate more than half the entry. Muscle tone was also lacking in many, which contributed to a loss in topline on the move. There were a few missing premolars but dentition was generally very good and only one dog had teeth showing neglect. I had no problems with tight and/or misplaced canines. I found 6 dogs with fused tail vertebrae, with one exception all were at the end of the tail. The big surprise was feet. Since I first judged longs I have admired their tight feet, thick pads and short nails. Nails are still short but today I was dismayed to find several with flat splayed feet – this did not apply to my winners. Coats were beautifully presented and super clean – thank you. Many moved rather close, or cow hocked, behind, and very few had the free flowing movement I was looking for – lots of hind legs going right under the body but not going beyond the vertical behind – so no drive. Temperaments were excellent.
VD (4,0)
1. Paskins’ Cedavoch Its Taboo at Kindeace, shaded red, freest mover in class with good ground clearance, a little close behind but moving with good hind extension BV
2. Pike & Carter’s Ch Zarcrest George Clooney, shaded red, preferred his head and eye but rather too much of him, lost to winner on ground clearance but another with freedom of movement
3. Wedge’s Peverleigh Autumnal Louis at Dolans, moved soundly but carrying too much weight and too deep in body for me
MPD (2,0)
Two red litter brothers
1. Garlick’s Ranglewood Christmas Star BPD, BP, excellent front construction and liked his size and length to height ratio, sound free mover, still very much a baby but very promising , won BP on balance and front movement
2. Partridge’s Ranglewood Xmas Cracker to Riveroyal, slightly more ground clearance but longer in loin, also moved well
PD (2,0)
1. Paskins’ Kindeace London’s Calling, shaded red with good ribbing and ground clearance. Shading on coat currently detracts from profile, but he has a level topline and reasonable ribbing, tends to lean on the lead and goose step, much better in front movement when settled and not pulling his handler
2. Basha’s Delsaux Made It Jumbo Band, shaded red, preferred his more conical head but overdone in front and too deep in ribbing, lacked ground clearance of winner and tends to move close behind
JD (6,0)
1. McNaughton’s Cedavoch Circeo, sound shaded red, excelled in profile and up and back movement here, not overdone in ribbing, good length to height ratio and better shoulders than most
2. Mitchell’s Ch Dachyclan Connolly at Bronia (imp Aus), best shoulder and front construction in class but not moving at all well behind, felt he lacked bone for his size and too long overall
3. O’Neills’ Ranglewood Phoenix at Donnadach
PGD (1,1)
LD (6,1)
First three were all shaded red
1. Pike & Carter’s Breezelyn Love You Long Time, CC, stood out here, excellent movement and fitness, compact shaded red of pleasing size and not overdone in depth of rib, preferred his front construction, length of ribbing and length to height ratio to second
2. Paskins’ Kindeace Hit The Road Jack JW, good ground clearance but longer in loin, not the shoulders of winner and hind movement not as positive
3. Wedge’s Dolan Dock Of The Bay, would prefer flatter coat but in excellent body condition, good length to height ratio and preferred his hind movement to remainder of class
OD (3,0)
1. H Geeson’s Ch Abydachs Return of the Night RCC (his 2nd from me) stood out here, very elegant lighter red, a lovely size with correct proportions, presented beautifully, preferred his head, reach of neck and ground clearance, best movement and ribbing in class
2 Lewis’s Trixhund Ten From Len JW, free moving b/t with pleasing profile, lacked the winner’s hind drive, steeper in shoulder and would prefer more ground clearance but rather more free on the ove than
3. J Geeson’s Ch Abydachs Darkest Knight sadly did not want to play today
I considered the winners of Junior, Limit and Open for the CC. Sadly the OD and JD both packed up in the challenge and their hind movement was not nearly as positive as in their classes. The LD covered the ground with an easy unexaggerated stride, holding his profile well and could not be denied the CC. The OD just had the edge over JD in balanced outline and overall finish.
MPB (1,0)
1. Richardson’s Ranglewood Noelle 8 month old b/t baby moved very soundly if hesitantly, would prefer a stronger jaw but a lovely size with good ribbing and ground clearance.
PB (5,0)
1. West’s Delsaux Twent Carat Golden for Kendalldax - BPB
2. Taylor & Hilton’s Delsaux Singer With The Band my notes say two very similar shaded reds and I see they are sisters by my VD winner. Both are very promising, just preferred neck front and shoulder of winner, both scored here on ribbing and ground clearance and moved very soundly behind
3. McGavigan & Pettigrew’s Pettigans Chanson D’Amour
JB (2,0) This was a cracking class. 2 lovely red bitches of correct size and shape, very little to choose between them and could happily take either one home. The winner was cleaner over the front and shoulder and moved beautifully in front ( which led to her winning BOB) and a shade more positively behind, lacking in coat today but that just accentuated her make and shape. Both had correct height to length ratio, lovely heads and eyes, good ribbing and good ground clearance.
1. Garlick’s Ranglewood Andromeda – CC, BOB
2. McNaughton’s Ch Cedavoch Just An Illusion RCC
PGB (5,0)
1. Lacey’s Abydachs Renegade Angel at Abydezi
2. Reids’ Swansford Daphnedora at Maudaxi a close decision between these two shaded reds, winner was just a little cleaner through the front, held her profile better in movement with better ground clearance, but preferred 2’s head, both scored in hind movement over 3
3. Chapman’s Melminds Up On The Catwalk
LB (10,1) A very strong class headed by another 2 lovely shaded reds with the 3rd, 4th and 5th all correct for size, shape and movement
1. Dare’s Darsoms Zyrhona, just flowed around the ring here, correct shoulder and ribbing, beautiful size, presented to perfection and perfectly balanced, won on hind angulation
2. Garlick’s Kyrenia Queens Request with Ranglewood, preferred her head and eye but although older just lacked the overall finish of the winner, preferred her shoulder and ribbing to
3. Reids’ Cavallibrook One Final Kiss at Maudaxi
OB (6,0) A lovely class of correct sized red bitches of excellent type with a very close decision between 1,2 and 3.
1. Hanney-Mitchell’s Ch Cavallibrook Final Fling Bronia,
2. Pike & Carter’s Breezelyn Longing For Love CW25 - preferred head and neck of the winner but both had correct coats, good proportions and height to length ratios, good fronts, ribbing and hind angulation and both moved very freely holding their shape, they scored on front movement towards me over 3
3. H Geeson’s Ch Abydachs Fire In Her Soul
The challenge was a tough decision but the two Junior bitches simply outmoved the Open and Limit winners, especially behind.
