Firstly, thank you to the Southern Counties Canine Association committee for the invitation to award Challenge Certificates for the first time in Dachshunds. I enjoyed every minute of my day, and the weather was especially kind. My ring stewards were excellent and kept the ring in perfect order.
Thank you to everyone for their quality entries and for making my day memorable and enjoyable. Every exhibitor took my decisions with grace and great sportsmanship, which I appreciated.
The overall quality in the breed was excellent with many exhibits showing great breed type and presented very well by their handlers. A small minority were overweight and one exhibit with an unacceptable bite, which I did take into consideration as I am always judging with a hunting hound who is fit for function in mind.
I was very pleased with my main winners and would have taken any of them home, which I think is always the highest compliment.
Veteran Dog (2)
1st Hirst’s Ranglewood Lantana at Kejana, 10 year old b/t in fantastic coat and condition, especially for his age which he was not showing at all. Impressive overall outline with good ground clearance and H:L ratio. Pleasing conical head with minimal stop and correct almond eyes and expression. Correct length of neck into well placed shoulders and enough forechest. Moderate length of ribbing and strong loin which maintained his top line stacked and on the move. Good bend of stifle in rear and correct tail set. Moved soundly coming but would prefer more drive behind.
2nd Wedge’s Peverleigh Autumnal Louis at Dolans. 7 year old red again in good body condition but preferred coat of 1. Excellent head proportions with correct ear set, would prefer a more almond eye. Good shoulder placement with correct length of upper arm and tight elbows. Moderate ribbing and strong loin, which kept a correct topline stacked and on the move. Correct bend of stifle with plenty of muscle but overall preferred movement of 1.
Puppy Dog (2,1)
1st Lacey’s Abydezi Shades of Glory. 11 month old s/r raw puppy who has maturing to do but good potential. He’s on the larger size for me but a great outline and H:L ratio with plenty of ground clearance. Heavier in head with a bit too much stop but a pleasing expression and correct ear set. Good length of neck into ok shoulders but would prefer longer upper arm. Good length of ribbing and strong loin which maintained a level topline. Good muscle behind but would prefer more bend of stifle. Excellent tail set and carriage. Moved with drive behind but could do with more reach in front. BP.
Junior Dog (1)
1st McNaughton’s Cedavoch Circeo. Striking 15 month old s/r in excellent coat and body condition with ideal outline and ground clearance. My judge’s book says wow! I noticed his head straight away with excellent almond eye and ideal proportions. He just flows on the table with a beautiful neck into excellent lay back of shoulder. Prominent prosternum with great spring of rib for ample heart and lung room which goes well back with lovely short loin. His rear angulation compliments his front assembly and completes a picture of balance. Once settled, he moved very soundly with lots of drive and excellent tail carriage. A bright future for sure, unlucky to meet the more mature CC winner today. RCC.

1st Hanney-Mitchell’s Dachyclan Lochlan at Bronia (Imp Aus). Quality 2 year old red in excellent coat and condition. Great outline with ideal ground clearance. Super conical head with very pleasing expression and almond eye. Ideal length of neck into good front assembly and tight elbows with strong broad feet. Prominent prosternum and great ribbing which maintains his topline stacked and on the move. Well balanced in rear to match front angulation. Moved soundly coming and going with excellent tail carriage.
2nd Vincent’s Gainscroft Dark Destroyer. 3 year old s/r again in excellent coat and condition. Similar to 1 in overall proportions and good ground clearance. Excellent conical head with almond eye and correct ear set. Good front assembly with ample forechest and excellent ribbing and strong loin to maintain level topline. Good tight elbows and strong broad feet. Great bend of stifle with sufficient muscle and correct hocks. He moved with speed and purpose around the ring but at times a little proud of his tail, which I took into consideration.
Open Dog (2)
1st Robert’s Ch Swansford Gabrieldor. 6 year old s/r with ideal outline. What a stylish showman who caught my eye immediately. He knows he’s a hound. Super elegant head with correct proportions and the most pleasing expression and almond eyes. Ideal length of neck into excellent front assembly and tight elbows. Excellent oval thorax with plenty of ribbing and short strong loin which maintains his perfect topline stacked and on the move. Great bend of stifle and correct hocks which balances with his front angulation. When this boy moves, you can’t take your eyes off him. He is so sound and moves with drive, purpose and an air of dignity. He could not be denied the CC and BOB, although his grandson is hot on his heels.
2nd Geeson’s Ch Abydachs Darkest Night. 4 year old s/r in excellent coat and condition. Another worthy champion with so much to admire and no surprise, a son of 1 as they share many great qualities. Excellent outline with ideal proportions. Another stunning head with the most pleasing almond eyes. Excellent front assembly and ideal balance with rear. Held topline very well on the move with perfect tail carriage. Just wasn’t as enthusiastic on the move as 1 today.
Special Beginners (3,1)
1st Partridge’s Pettigans Viva La Vida by Riveroyal. 20 month old s/r bitch of good size and body condition. Pleasing head with correct proportions and ear set but would prefer a more almond eye. Good length of neck into ok shoulder placement and enough forechest. Good tight elbows and strong broad feet. Good length of ribbing but longer in loin which causes slight rise in top line. Great bend of stifle and ideal low hocks. Moved well around the ring with correct tail carriage but I would prefer more drive. BSB
2nd Lacey’s Abydezi Northern Lights. Different in type to 1. S/r bitch in good coat and body condition. Head proportions correct but rounder eye and more stop than 1. Higher shoulder placement than 1 and less forechest but she has a good topline and rear is in balance with front. Moved well for owner but preferred overall outline and movement of 1.
Veteran Bitch (2)
1st Bailey’s Glasvey Double Trouble for Loggeta JW VW. 8 year old s/r in excellent coat and condition. Not showing her age at all and very sound. Excellent size and type. Good head proportions but would prefer a more almond eye to be critical. Excellent front assembly with prominent prosternum and great depth of chest. Good tight elbows and broad feet. Ribbing went well back with strong loin and level topline. Excellent bend of stifle and rear angulation balances with front perfectly. She kept her outline perfectly in the challenge and was so sound that I could not deny her the RCC to the youngsters hot on her tail. BV and RCC.
2nd Wedge’s Faulksfollie Miss Minaver at Dolans. S/r of good body condition but different type to 1. Great head proportions but would prefer more almond eye. Good length of neck into decent shoulder placement. Preferred the overall balance and topline of 1 which was hard to beat on the move.

Post Graduate Bitch (3,1)
1st Robert’s Swansford Padmaeadora. 15 month old s/r of ideal size and in excellent coat and condition. Excellent head with pleasing almond eye. Good length of neck with excellent prominent prosternum and great shoulder placement. Moderate ribbing with lovely short loin and great topline. Strong rear with ideal bend of stifle and length of hock. Moved with great purpose around the ring and true coming and going. Very promising girl with a bright future no doubt.
2nd Lacey’s Abydezi Northern Light. See Special Beginner critique.
Limit Bitch (6)
1st McNaughton’s Cedavoch Just an Illusion. 15 month old s/r bitch who just oozed quality. Beautiful outline with correct ground clearance. In excellent coat and great muscle tone. Stunning conical head with perfect almond eyes and the most elegant expression. Correct reach of neck into excellent front assembly with prominent prosternum and good tight elbows. Oval thorax with ribbing going well back and excellent short loin which maintained her topline stacked and on the move. Correct bend of stifle and short hocks to balance front. Very sound coming and going and moved with great balance in profile. A very promising future I am sure and no hesitation in awarding her the CC.
2nd Robert’s Swansford Debhoradora. 2 year old s/r in excellent coat and condition and different type to 1. Another bitch that oozed quality and caught my eye on initial look. She has a stunning head with pleasing almond eye. Excellent front assembly with enough ground clearance and ribbing that went well back to maintain her level topline. Good tight elbows and excellent broad feet. Great bend of stifle to balance with front. She keeps her outline on the move but was giving her handler a bit of a hard time. She pushed hard for the RCC but sadly her performance on the day let her down. Her day will come, I am sure of it.
Open Bitch (1)
1st Pike & Carter’s Breezelyn Longing for Love. 2 year old s/r of great breed type and ideal size. Another with excellent head proportions and pleasing expression. Ok front assembly and enough ground clearance. Good tight elbows and moderate ribbing and short loin. Lovely level topline stacked and on the move. Good bend of stifle and low hocks with excellent rear muscle. Very enthusiastic and happy girl on the move, which made her a little proud of her tail but she was sound coming and going.
