Martha My Dear
Thanks to the exhibitors and my ring stewards. This is the first time I have judged SLH in this country and I must say I was disappointed in my findings. Shoulders overall not only placed too far forward, but upper arms are also extremely short and the lay of the scapular far to upright. Consequently, effects the reach on the move, the amount of prosternum and the length of neck which are all critical aspect of any dachshund. Feet were generally acceptable with good nail pigmentation. The breed standard stipulates that a dachshund must have a scissor bite whereby the top incisors overlap half the depth of the bottom incisors. There were many incorrect bites a disqualifying fault in any other country. Eye shape generally okay however many set obliquely on the skull. Most are flat in front lacked prosternum which can be disguised by some clever hair styling. Length to height ratio very much fitting the old breed standard, not the 2:1 length to height ratio of the new breed standard so this aspect of the general shape hasn’t moved forward since the new breed standard was written over a decade ago. Ribbing, the initial building block of a dachshund is generally okay, oval and of good length. Many were a bit long in loin. Found far too many triangular pelvis’s, steep croups, with too much hind angulation. Consequently, affect the width between the hocks going away with no rear extension. Many cannot hold their own weight and collapse behind. In saying this most lack correct movement. Temperaments were sound overall, not one backed off on the table or the walk by on the ground. Overall presentation and coats were good given the extended period of hot climate that proceeded the show. It is obvious the SLH gene pool is very restricted in quality and quantity in this country.
Puppy Dog Entries: 1 Absentees: 0 1ST 438 - Bronia Leonardo (Mrs Ja & Mr Ag Cooper & Hendren) Young male right on the limit of puppy at 12mths of age and my best puppy in breed. Pleasing head of correct proportions could do with a touch more neck. Has a good rib cage so it should hold its shape as it matures and well coupled loin. Kept a good outline on the move, well presented. BPIB

1ST 472 - Sujarah Dare to Dream (Mrs S Rodrigues) Very nice head, upright forward placed shoulder coupled with a short upper arm, held a good topline on the move with acceptable hindquarters.
2ND 460 - Ranglewood Finlaggan at Donnadach (Ms S M & Miss K J M O'neill) Pleasing head, again upright forward placed shoulder coupled with a short upper arm, held a good topline on the move, preferred the overall movement of 1st.

1ST 479 - Gainscroft Dashing Dudley (Miss S L Vincent) Clean sleek exhibit with sound movement in all 3 direction, Shoulder blade close to where it should be.
2ND 461 - Ranglewood Pheonix at Donnadach (Ms S M & Miss K J M O'neill) Lovely head, good front assemble with sufficient prosternum, Good bone not much to fault. Courser than first.

1ST 454 - Trixhund Ten from Len JW ShCEx OSW (Mr D M Lewis) Extremely nice head sitting on enough length of neck. Prosternum you could hang a coat hanger on. One of very few exhibited on the day that had close to a correct front assembly where the upper arm is almost the same length as the scapular which is placed at the correct location on the ribcage with a lay back of close to 45 degrees. Super bone in the forearm and back hocks with beautiful feet. Angle of the pastern to the table the same as the lay back of shoulder. Good length of rib and a super tail set with the correct length of tail. The back end stands square with enough turn of stifle. The hocks hold themselves upright without folding in both on the table and on the ground. Super mover that doesn’t need to be dragged around the ring to get it to move out and one of only 3 exhibits that you could see the pads of its back feet in full flight. Has the exact height to ratio of 2:1 with good ground clearance which is visible on the move. This would be my ideal stud dog. Pleased to award him the DCC and BOB which I believe is his 3rd and at 5 years of age is beyond all reckoning given the state of breed.
2ND 445 - Ch Abydachs Return of The Night (Miss E H Geeson) Quality exhibit of breed type, however I preferred the bone, front feet and the amount of prosternum of first. Doesn’t quite have the movement of first and is slightly longer than first. RDCC

1ST 468 - Ch Swansford Gabrieldor (Mr D Roberts) Quality exhibit of breed type, Pleasing head, forward placed shoulder consequently lack of prosternum, keeps a good outline in the move albeit no rear extension and drive from the rear.
2ND 444 - Ranglewood Harvest Song (Miss E A Garlick) Age could have been the difference here as I preferred the movement of first.
Puppy Bitch Entries: 3 Absentees: 1
1ST 452 - Trixhund Crystal Royale (Mr D M Lewis) 6mth old and first appearance in the ring for this top-quality youngster. A little bit older and if it was settled in ring craft this could well have been my BCC winner. Very well put together on the stack and when settled going around the ring it has a good topline to go with fore and aft reach and drive movement at the correct width. One to watch for the future.
2ND 449 - Abydezi Abracadabra (Miss K Lacey) Preferred the breed type of first, does have a nice close to 45 degrees lay of shoulder which is almost non-existent in the breed, its upper arm is slightly shorter however it is definitely something to work with. 193. Dachshund (Long-Haired) -
Junior Bitch Entries: 5 Absentees: 0
1ST 459 - Cedavoch Twist of Fate (L Mcnaughton) Nice breed type but does need to settle in the ring. Pleasing head, front assembly almost where it should be very close to the required 2:1 length to height ratios, lacking in hindquarter construction.
2ND 446 - Abydachs Out of The Fire (ai) (Mrs J F Geeson) Breed type is there quite elegant, however I preferred the front construction and front movement of first, Nice out line in profile on the go around and when stood.
Special Beginners Bitch Entries: 3 Absentees: 0
1ST 467 - Ranglewood Noelle (Miss E Richardson) Would prefer a better head with a similar front construction to almost 95% of the entry upright blade with a short upper arm. Lacks balance front to back when stood which could be made to look better in the presentation.
2ND 447 - Ranglewood Katrine (Miss P A Heap) Not the head I prefer, front assembly passable however the hindquarter construction and movement could be better.
Post Graduate Bitch Entries: 4 Absentees: 0
1ST 464 - Cavallibrook One Final Kiss at Maudaxi (Mr P & Mrs D Reid) Pleasing head, shoulder placement and lay back acceptable upper arm slightly short but not as bad as most, good ribbing which held together a very good topline on the move. Hind quarters stand square on the table, but I do have a question mark on the hind quarters on the move.
2ND 476 - Delsaux Singer with The Band (Messrs J M & M A Taylor & Hilton) Nice bitch that could be handled better, correct 2:1 height to length ratios however I preferred the topline on the move of first.
Limit Bitch Entries: 5 Absentees: 1
It was a close decision between my first three placing here.
1ST 441 - Kyrenia Queens Request with Ranglewood (Miss E A Garlick) Shaded red with nice breed type, it was the movement that was the deciding factor in the placings of this class as this bitch paints a very nice picture on the move. Height to length ratios is where they should be.
2ND 448 - Abydachs Renegade Angel at Abydezi (Miss K Lacey) Hard to fault with correct proportions however I preferred the movement of first.

Close decision here between first and second
1ST 453 - Trixhund Madness JW (Mr D M Lewis) Very nicely constructed bitch. It has the head shape, eye and ear set that I like on a bitch. Shoulder blade is placed at the right position on the rib cage that has a lay back close to 45deg with an upper arm that is the same length as the scapular (hard to find these days in any variety) viewed front on the rib cage sits nicely into the crook with nice feet. It has a good topline stacked and, on the move, its hindquarters stand square and move parallel at the correct width with drive, one of very few you can see the pads of the back feet when moving away. I would say possible slightly long for its height. Beautifully balanced front to back possibly slightly out of coat on the day. This bitch should get it’s crown. My BCC winner.
2ND 442 - Ranglewood Andromeda (Miss E A Garlick) Very nice breed type slightly sleeker and elegant than first. Nice head, front construction, rib cage and hind quarters, can stand 4 square. Slightly longer and bigger than first but carries a good top line on the move. I did prefer the rear extension of first. Awarded the RCC however it was a very close decision between the first two in this class. Based on its merits this bitch should be made up before the years out.
Veteran Bitch Entries: 2 Absentees: 0
1ST 481 - Faulksfollie Miss Minaver at Dolans (Mr M Wedge) Sleeker bitch with a good shoulder lay and placement slightly narrow right through won this class on movement.
2ND 455 - Dagastren Martha My Dear (Mr G P, Mrs D E & Miss J L Lumley) A bit out of condition compared to first. Front was slightly forward deciding factor in this class was the movement of first.
