SMOOTH-HAIRED
Always a great honour to judge at Crufts. My
notes on the individual winners tend to be fairly brief as I found most of my
winners in the well filled classes were of very good merit and in several cases
my decisions were very close, and will no doubt be reversed on another day. I
often wonder how often the breed standards are referred to? After all, the blue
print of the breed!! We all know that Dachshund is a long dog and is low to
ground! However, how long is long and how low is low? In general appearance, I
have always liked the fact that the word ‘compact’ appears. Far too many are
over long in body giving the appearance that the front half does not belong to
the back end! Where you have the compact well muscled dog, it stands and moves
as a whole unit. Then we are told that the body should be sufficiently clear of
the ground to allow free movement. Those early pioneers who laid the foundations
of the Dachshund standard, for us, were wise indeed, because another obvious
fault was quite a number, although possessing great quality, were far too low to
ground. A few round eyes, an ungy fault, were to be found. General condition
lacking in coat, I found. The barometer of health is always reflected in the
hair and fur of any animal. Quite a number had dry scurfy, poor quality jackets.
Must be a case of checking whether they are on the correct diets? There seemed
to be a number of very good reds, which appear to be related. The best of breed
really high class, black and tan with all the essentials, in splendid form, I
particularly liked his outgoing confident temperament, also winning Best Good
Citizens award, great tribute to his young handler. Some really good puppies,
coming forward for the future. Best Puppy, a really high class and should have a
bright future. Lovely bitches also, that augers well for the future of this
popular variety. A happy day for me to judge this breed.
