I am very grateful to the Secretary and Committee for the opportunity to judge three  varieties of dachshund at championship level and it was interesting to compare the various traits and differences. It was hard but rewarding work with dogs present in 36 classes and very warm weather: the in-and-out tented rings were so welcome for all concerned, especially the dogs, and movement may have affected by the hot conditions. My two trusty stewards, Sue and Alison, worked so hard and efficiently to keep me on track and I am extremely grateful to them both. SMOOTH HAIRED DACHSHUND I was generally pleased with the entry with none showing the really heavy low fronts which have afflicted the breed in the past and none of my firsts or seconds showing less than the required 25% clearance. Temperaments were good. One slightly odd finding was the ear set which overall was too low on the head. Veteran: (1,0) Wand’s Wanderhund California Girl, 8 year old black & tan (B&T) bitch, compact, in excellent hard condition, very good front, decent pair of shoulders, level topline and just enough clearance, good tight feet, moved out with confidence and really enjoying her day out, up for consideration in the challenge BV Puppy Dog: (0,0) Junior Dog: (1,0) Wand’s Wanderhund For My Next Trick, 11 month old B&T, with good head and eye, excellent outline and proportions, decent amount of clearance, correct shoulder placement and elbows, fine length of neck, really tight feet, level topline and drove out well if not quite parallel at front, BPD & RDCC Post Graduate Dog: (4,1) Hinwood’s Longmel Courvoissier Truffle, 2 year old red, pleasing head and eye, sufficient neck, strong front, decent clearance, tight feet, good topline, a tad more ribbing and rear angulation would be preferred, drove well enough and fairly parallel 2. Carver’s Hasoma Lumiere, 2 year old B&T, good head and eye, a little upright in front, good length of neck, level topline, could do with a bit more ribbing, not the feet of class winner, didn’t move out with enthusiasm, fairly parallel at rear but better on approach 3. Heels’ Daxonory Menacing Awesome  Limit Dog: (6,0) 1. Hinwood’s Adnerb Sheer Nanagins, 4 year old B&T, lovely strong head, dark eye, clean neck, good front, correct shoulders and elbows, level topline, enough clearance, adequate ribbing, good rear angulation, moved well in class and better so in the challenge DCC & BoB 2. Rycroft’s Jacksondax Hornet at Trisensara, 19 month old B&T, masculine head, good length of neck, level topline, adequate front but not that of class winner, not too tight at elbow, ribbing a touch limited, moved well enough but rather close viewed from rear 3. MacDonald’s Bensarka Limerick Open Dog : (3,2) 1. Graham’s  Ch Marvale Chancellor at Ravold JW, 2 year old B&T, strong masculine head, good eye, long clean neck, good prosternum, adequate ribbing, a little down on pasterns, clearance just sufficient, moved out well if a bit close at rear  Special Beginner: (3,2) 1. Sandell’s Wanderhund Grand Illusion, 11 month old red dog, correct head, good length of neck, strong front, good shoulder angulation and tight elbows, level topline, tight feet, just enough clearance, moved well if not that parallel, BSB Puppy Bitch: (3,1) 1. Chapman-Reith’s Wanderhund under Your Spell with Hayvenhund, 11 month old B&T, compact proportions, pleasing head, lovely length of neck, good front and shoulder angulation, correct elbows,  good feet, drove out well, 2. Rycroft’s Raajput Dancer Divaa with Trisensara, 8 month old B&T, pleasing feminine head, good length of neck, adequate front and shoulders, correct elbows, level topline, lost out on the move with flagged tail and not that parallel at rear Junior Bitch: (3,1) 1. Wand’s Wanderhund Put A Spell On You, 11 month old B&T, compact proportions, good head and eye, good front,  correct shoulder placement, good elbows, level topline, good ribbing, really tight feet, BP  2. Turton’s Jaxinorydax Beautiful Lies for Damoradaxies, 13 month old B&T, good front, shoulders and elbows, decent length of ribbing, level topline, rather down on pasterns, rather close behind and front, gave her young hantdler a bit of a challenge Post Graduate Bitch: (4,0) 1. Ashby’s Raajput’s Candian Winter with Wakywilks, 2 year old B&T, feminine head, good neck, excellent front, good elbows, level topline, a bit down on pasterns, good rear angulation, moved well and reasonably parallel, 2. Rycroft’s Chidax Sahara Sand by Trisensara, 19 month old red, feminine head but a little short in muzzle, good neck, good front, shoulders and tight elbows, level topline, drove well but not too parallel, 3. Hinwood’s Longmel After Eight Truffel Limit Bitch: (6,1) 1. Gentle’s Craimose Freesia, 2 year old B&T, compact proportions, good prosternum, correct shoulders, tight elbows, rather down on pasterns, level topline, moved reasonably well and fairly parallel both front and rear,  2. Tomlinson’s Melisdax Memories of May, 3 year old B&T, correct proportions and clearance, good shoulders and elbows, tight feet, level topline, moved well if a bit close both ways, 3. Ashby’s Rayol Pumpkin Pie at Jaxinorydax Open Bitch: (3,1) 1. Tomlinson’s Melisdax Magnolia in May, 3 year old red, correctly proportioned, enough clearance, strong prosternum, correct shoulders with tight elbows, tight feet, level topline with nicely rising underline, moved well both ways, just a hint of liking her tail BCC 2. Stark’s Ch Adnerbs Won Vision of Gobannium JW OSW, 6 year old red, good head and neck, correct shoulders and tight elbows, good tight feet, enough clearance, drove well, parallel going away but not quite so on approach. Preferred the smaller size and movement of class winner RBCC. Ian Smith (Salixian) 15th July 2025
