Thank you to the Hound Association of Scotland for the invitation to judge my very first set of CCs in any Dachshund variety, and for their warm welcome and hospitality on the day. Thanks also to the exhibitors for their lovely entry, accepting my decisions gracefully and congratulating each other without exception. I enjoyed my time judging this variety but was left a little concerned with the number of dogs who were either nervous or noticeably unsure of the environment.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Puppy Dog (2,0)

1. Bethel’s Hampdach Sharp Dressed Man. A very smart black and tan who is nearly a year old. His overall outline and proportions impressed, even if I would not want him any longer than this. He is well made through the front and has good spring of rib, max length of loin. Strong and well bent hindquarters and particularly smooth over the croup. He has a lovely carriage on the move where he displays a lengthy stride and was true coming and going, holding a good topline and correct tail carriage. BP.

2. Swanson’s Altimarlach Diabhal Dubh. A younger, 7 month old black and tan. A little heavier through than 1 and lower to the ground but still fairly balanced. He had a masculine and balanced head with dark, well-shaped eyes. Not quite the neck and front construction of 1. Very good ribbing and a strong, short loin. Excellent feet. Not yet as together or positive on the move as 1, but still fairly sound.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Junior Dog (1,0)

1. Andison’s Clentry Into The Fire. A young red dog with excellent proportions and outline. Really impressed on the stack and was so good to go over, he is in excellent body and has super infill and ribbing, holding a solid topline. Just not yet quite sure of his surroundings and I felt this held him back on the move, where I’d have liked to see him open up a little more and use his hindquarters. Still, a quality young dog.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Limit Dog (5,1)

1. Ashby’s Rayol Dallas Cowboys at Jaxinorydax JW. A red dog with a pleasing overall look, good for size and substance with correct leg and ground clearance. Pleasing head and well set, moderate ears. His neck is of good length, even if it could be slightly smoother set into his front. He is perhaps a little moderate in angulation, but balanced fore and aft, and displays this in his movement. Ribbed well back and has a short loin, scoring over 2. Would like tighter feet. Stylish mover, if not as positive up and down as my main winners. In super overall condition and has a good temperament.

2. Bethel’s Hampdach Lord Flashheart. A black and tan male who is generous in his proportions and length. Not always consistent in his outline, but at his best, it was flowing and smooth. Better angulated fore and after than 1, but not the forechest or length of ribbing. He too could have better feet. Like his younger kennel mate, he is quite a showman and moved with enthusiasm and carriage showing good reach and drive.

3. Small’s Almaznyi Laretz Ershalaim at Devondax (Imp Rus).

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Open Dog (6,0)

1. McNaughton’s Ch Clentry Cooking Up A Storm. Smart red brindle dog who scores for size and proportions. He is so balanced and everything flows. Handsome head, with good length through, and plenty strength to underjaw. Lovely length of neck with slight arch. My notes state ‘best front so far’ and indeed, he had the best front of the entry which was totally balanced with his strong, well angulated rear. Super forechest, length and spring of rib and strong short loin. He was one of many on the day who were slightly unsettled on the move by the surface and ‘drain’ covers rattling, but once settled, he showed sound movement in all directions holding his solid outline at all times. A quality male and eventually, a comfortable CC winner. DCC.

2. Binks’ Ch Cedavoch Ocean Storm. Red dog who was not dissimilar in size, proportions and overall look of 1, but perhaps not quite as clean and smooth in outline. Masculine head and bright expression. Good in neck and shoulder, even if not quite the length of upper arm as 1. In good body and pleasing to go over. Super feet. Made his handler work hard on the stack but pulled himself together on the move where he goes with purpose on a lengthy stride. Thought he made a nice pair with the DCC winner. RDCC.

3. Graham’s Ch Marvale Chancellor at Ravold JW.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Puppy Bitch (1,0)

1. Swanson’s Altimarlach Beitidh Putans. Red bitch in super body for a puppy and pleasing in proportions, with a smooth outline. Lovely head of good length and balance, charming eyes and expression. Fair front construction, could have more neck, holds a strong level topline and has good ribbing. Would like her a little more true moving up and down, has a moderate balanced stride in profile. Sound temperament.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Junior Bitch (4,0)

1. Mill-Jones, Moses & Williams’ Cwmdarhian Pina Colada. A most stylish shaded red bitch. Very forward for one so young and rather generous in proportions. Admired her clean outline and ground clearance. Feminine head of good length with pleasing expression. Excellent neck and front, with balanced rear quarters. In super body and condition. Opens up on the move into a long stride, with good carriage; I’d just like her a little cleaner coming towards.

2. Jennings’ Melriding True Colours at Jenivon. Black and tan. Appreciated the size and moderate balance of this bitch. She was a little unsure of the surroundings today and I felt this held her back on the move where she could have had more drive from her hindquarters. Feminine head held on a lengthy neck, though I’d like a touch more underjaw. She is well made all through and in excellent condition. Just needs more time and experience.

3. Rycroft’s Raajput’s Dancer Divva with Trisensara JW.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Novice Bitch (1,0)

1. Haggerty’s Keijam Heather On The Hill. Shaded red. Charming young bitch who has a well balanced, feminine head. I’d like more layback and angulation in front. Fairly well ribbed and has a firm topline. A true mover up and down. Delightful temperament, even if she was a little fond of her tail.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Graduate Bitch (2,0)

1. Graham’s Melriding Kaiserine at Ravold. I was quite taken with this smart and stylish black and tan. She impressed for size, substance and overall proportions, with an outline as smooth as glass. Totally feminine throughout and pleasing to go over. Super condition. She carries herself so well on the move going with super reach and drive, showing off her reachy neck and firm topline. Just needs time to be more sure of herself and her surroundings.

2. Balfour’s Clentry Steal The Limelight. A feminine and refined red bitch with who I admired for her excellent proportions and ground clearance, but she did not have the smoothness of outline, front construction or ribbing as 1. Good strength to her rear with well bent stifles. In good coat and muscle condition. Moved fairly well.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Post Graduate Bitch (2,0)

1. McNaughton’s Clentry Steal My Thunder. What a frustrating bitch this was to judge! She had the quality and construction to take top honours (and it was interesting to find out she was litter sister to the DCC winner) but she was determined to throw away her chances. Ideal outline and proportions and presents such a balanced and smooth overall picture. Beautiful head with good strength of underjaw and dark eyes. Lovely long neck set smoothly into excellent front construction. I saw enough glimpses of sound and true movement to take this class and hoped she would have improved further in the challenge. She would have surely walked away with a green and white card if she had made a better account of herself. Definite quality.

2. Holburn’s Marvale Party Politics at Glenlion. Black and tan bitch who was up to size but in proportion and had a pleasing outline. Scored in length of neck and topline. Would like her in better coat condition. Like 1, she too was unsettled on the move but her young handler did a marvellous job in presenting her to maximum potential in the circumstances, well done!

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Limit Bitch (4,1)

1. Ashby’s Rayol Pumpkin Pie at Jaxinorydax. This red bitch is super for size and appealed to me for her proportions and ground clearance. Lovely head and expression, totally feminine. She has a clean outline with a lengthy neck set well into pleasing front angulation and firm topline. Feet could be better. She was one of the minority who stood out for totally sound temperament and was also shown in overall gleaming condition. Whilst she could be slightly more positive in rear action, she still covers good ground holding a static outline, out-moving this class and continuing to impress in the challenge. RBCC.

2. Rycroft’s Chidax Sahara Sand by Trisensara JW. Another feminine red bitch who was good for size, although somewhat heavier through the front than 1 where I’d have liked a more refined neck and cleaner flow of neck into shoulder. Well balanced and feminine head with lovely eyes and intelligent expression. Well sprung ribs and carried fairly well back. Hammy rear quarters. Not quite the length of upper arm as 1 but still scored over 3 for her angles both fore and aft which also became apparent on the move. Delightful temperament and excellent condition.

3. Balfour’s Clentry Mango Passion ShCEx.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Open Bitch (2,0)

1. Andison’s Clentry Forget Me Not. Super bitch who presents a clean and typical outline with excellent overall balance. She excels in proportions and ground clearance. Long, feminine head though I wouldn’t mind a touch more underjaw. Excellent neck and front, balanced by a strong rear. Whilst she very much pleased me on the stack, it was on the move where she came into her own. She goes with such a free and flowing action, showing very good reach and drive. It was a pleasure to see her move around the ring on a loose lead with a totally natural, defiant carriage and a wagging tail! Excellent temperament. BCC & BOB.

2. Ashby’s Raajput’s Canadian Winter with Wakywilks. A black and tan of pleasing type and quality, just that little bit heavier through than 1 and needing a little weight off which didn’t help. Lovely balanced head, plenty neck and pleasing front construction. Well ribbed back and holds a good topline. Not quite the angles of 1 both fore and aft. Sound mover, if not the stride and carriage of 1.

Dachshund (Smooth-Haired) Special Beginners Bitch (1,0)

1. Balfour’s Clentry Mango Passion ShCEx. 3rd in Limit. Red bitch with a pleasing head and a bright, intelligent expression. She has excellent proportions and whilst balanced, I would like more angles fore and aft. A very sound mover up and down and holds her topline, but would like more reach and drive in profile. Sound temperament. Congratulations on Reserve Best Special Beginners in Show!
