I was obviously curious to see to what extent this Dachshund variety had benefited from the foreign blood introduced over the past decade. I was delighted to find the breed in excellent shape, with so many outstanding specimens exhibited under me. I salute all the clever breeders who had a hand in this remarkable transformation. The temperaments were most impressive and I cannot recall a single instance of apprehension or aggression. MPD (1) 1 Norman & Ratcliffe’s Silvae Hotshot, delightful brindle pup with superbly constructed quarters, oodles of neck, well proportioned head, lovely dark eye and a joy to behold on the move. PD (2) McCalmonts’ Silvae Patriot, totally smitten by this beautiful low-stationed youngster with textbook front assembly, oval chest, prominent prosternum, level back and dream hindquarters. Substance without a hint of coarseness, well furnished masculine head, carried on generous reach of neck, superb coat texture. Covered ground effortlessly, showing reach and drive, correct tail carriage. CC, BOS & BP; 2 Robinsons’ Tagundnacht Dinner of Herbs, also much to like about this boy with appealing head, good length of neck, correct front and rear assembly and sound movement. Not the bone of 1 and outline unfortunately marred by a high-set tail, resulting in gay carriage. JD (2) 1 McCalmonts’ Silvae Patriot (see above); 2 Gibson’s Allfreys Seabiscuit, red brindle appreciated for well proportioned and furnished head, adequate length of neck, good spring of rib and well assembled rear. Would have liked a better lay-back of shoulder, more by way of forechest and lower tailset. Moved reasonably well, but topline tended to come and go. PGD (3) Norman & Ratcliffe’s Ermwood Buz Fuz, another dog I admired greatly for his sound front and rear construction, full-volumed chest, conspicuous prosternum, excellent ribs carried well back and superb coat quality. Moved with great purpose, carrying his well furnished, conical head on a generous reach of neck. RCC; 2 Poulter’s Lankelly Gallant Moss, dark brindle dog, well assembled fore- and hindquarter and well ribbed up. Head, neck, coat and movement pleasing, but lacking somewhat in forechest and failing to maintain a level topline at all times; 3 Vospers’ Tregiskey Huckleberry Finn in Oggyland. LD (7) 1 Dible’s Liebling Here Comes the Boss, elegant red dog with excellent coat, balanced head, dark eye and bones set at prescription angles front and rear. Could have done with a touch more forechest, but impressive reach of neck, level topline, good tailset and effortless movement completed a thoroughly pleasing picture; 2 Coverley’s Romanchi Choctaw, different in type to 1 and well up to size, but nevertheless a well assembled brindle dog with an especially pleasing hindquarter, good head properties, robust ribbing and bold forechest. Moved well, but outline prejudiced by a too high tail carriage; 3 Davies’s Atahira Bags The Blue. OD (9) 1 McCalmonts’ Ch Silvae Pickwick, thoroughly engaging brindle with great ring presence. Well structured and assembled in front and behind without any exaggeration. Superbly proportioned and furnished head carried on admirable length of neck, excellent harsh coat, spirited mover. I would have liked a bit more in front, but this should not detract from a dog which can hold his own in the best of company. 2 Phillips’s Romanchi Chawasha at Tendrow, much to like about this compactly structured brindle with good lay-back of shoulder, pleasing hindquarter and harmoniously proportioned head. Not quite the presence and movement of 1, but nevertheless a dog that ought to appeal for many judges; 3 Rollinsons’ Nosinllor Grenadier. VD/B (6) 1 Pughe & Fraser’s Ch Bystock Black Queen, low-stationed brindle bitch with appealing head, good front, reasonable amount of forechest, pleasing hindquarter, full buttocks and good coat. Going on nine, she moved with great purpose, showing no slackness in topline; 2 Williams’ Ch/Ir Ch Lieblings Pick ’n Mix, at almost eight, a most deserving brindle dog with good ribbing and well constructed hindquarter. Would have liked more lay-back of shoulder and bolder forechest, but appreciated him for his superb coat, hard-driving hind action and correct tail carriage; 3 Ch Lankelly Black Bryony. MPB (3) 1 Seward’s Liebling Star Performer, little red charmer with pretty much everything in the right place. Excellent front and rear assembly, good ribbing extending well back, prominent forechest and delightful head and tail carriage. Awesome on the move and, if she fulfils her promise, I predict a great future; 2 Kent’s Liebling Star Attraction (TAF), also a red and sister of 1, impressive in conformation with well constructed fore- and hindquarters and superb ribbing. Equally feminine and elegant, but not quite the head and prosternum of her sister at this stage of their development; 3 Opitz’s Cloghaneely Charlotte. PB (5) 1 Robinson’s Tagundnacht Rosy of the River, although this brindle baby was rather fidgety on the stack, I could not deny her the class on account of her well constructed quarters, bold forechest, capacious chest and elegant reach of neck and conical head well carried. Moved with great exuberance and pleased me enormously; 2 Mortlock’s Hertsmerry Stealing Heaven, dark brindle with good front and ribbing, well angulated hindquarter, but lacking somewhat in prosternum. Slight run-up behind, but topline should stabilise as she matures. Moved with reach and drive and head carried on sufficient neck; 3 Endersbys’ Mowbray Legacy of Love. JB (9) 1 Pattons’ Lesandnic Like a Butterfly, a pleasure to go over this dynamite brindle package with exquisite head, elegant neck, delightful expression and audacious attitude. Front and rear assembly was all one could ever hope for, chest voluminous with so much in front. Harsh wrapper enhanced it all and she was supercharged around the ring. RCC; 2 Phillips’s Saxonbury Playday at Tendrow, low to ground, pleased me a great deal with her excellent lay-back of shoulder, superb rear, generous spring of rib and firm topline. Moved with confidence, using her quarters to maximum effect; 3 Gordons’ Cempsey Florin. PGB (10) 1 Phillips’s Saxonbury Playtime at Tendrow, sister to 2nd in the previous class, this brindle youngster delighted me no end. With a short, sturdy coupling, and with bones in front and in the rear set at the desired angles, her topline never failed on the stack or on the move. Neck to spare, carried her head proudly and defiantly, exceptionally good tail carriage; 2 Higgott’s Soneve Phoebe of Elaton, brindle of considerable merit with superior front assembly, deep chest and prominent prosternum. Body construction excellent, but hind angulation on the conservative side. Feminine head and excellent reach of neck, made the most of her attributes on the move; 3 Pughe & Fraser’s Ritterburg Star Turn at Bystock. LB (9) Rees’s Ermewood Arabella, appreciated this brindle for her pleasing head and elegant reach of neck, soundly constructed quarters, well ribbed up body and level topline. Would have benefited from a little more prosternum, but otherwise looked and acted the part superbly. Moved effortlessly; 2 Dible’s Ritlo the Gypsys Fortune at Liebling, undoubtedly also much to appreciate about this exhibit with her well constructed front and pronounced forechest. Feminine in head and elegant in neck, well ribbed up, ample bottom, likely to find many fans along the way and with good reason. Moved with reach and drive, but inclined to carry her tail a little too high; 3 Davies’s Cempsey Centime by Atahira. OB (12) 1 McCalmonts’ Ch Silvae Picnic, just when I though it couldn’t get any better, it did. A bitch in top form who put it together big time on the day. Compactly structured, muscled, toned and turned out to perfection, she oozed the confidence, determination and attitude to outmanoeuvre, and ultimately outmove, her opposition. With all the physical essentials in perfect place, and the bonus of an exceptionally pleasing head and yards of neck, this would be a tough one to beat on any day she decides to own the ring. CC & BOB; 2 Seath’s Sunsong Secret Affair, dark brindle with pin wire coat that stood her ground admirably against a formidable opponent. Soundly constructed in the fore and hindquarter with deep ribs carried well back, well rounded buttocks. Her sparse furnishings emphasised her correct conical head, carried on ample neck. Moved with style and richly deserved her high placing in the class; 3 Ryders’ Ch Sonic Knight Sky to Jaskar.
