Birmingham National 2007 Dachshund (Wire Haired) Judge: Mrs Fran Mitchell
|
My thanks to the exhibitors for an excellent entry. I
judged this variety in 2001 and I was very much looking forward to judging them
again. When I last judged, the imports were just beginning to have an influence,
and in a fairly good entry there were some very nice specimens and I felt that
the variety is making positive steps forward. On the day here I am afraid I was
very disappointed. My biggest problem was the large divergence in type, which
made it impossible to judge to any type. There were quite a few tight scissor
bites which needs to be watched, as well as a couple of incorrect mouths.
Construction in some was a great concern, quite a few having little or no
pro-sternum at all, and ribbing so short it cut up shortly behind for front
legs. On a positive note, I was pleased with my winners and in some classes
there were good ones down the line. Breeders need to work together to try and
get more unoformity in the breed. My DCC winner was of good type with an
excellent head and dark eye. Good length of neck running into well laid and
angulated shoulders. Excellent bone and super feet. Strong, well angulated
quarters. Unfortunately his tailset detracts from an otherwise good outline.
Well muscled up and powerful on the move. My Res DCC, though also of American
breeding, couldn’t have been more different in type. He also has a lovely head
and eye, good neck and well laid shoulders. Good ribbing and balanced rear. Felt
he could have carired more body and muscle on the day. My BCC and BOB was
beautifully balanced with a lovely head and long neck, running into well placed
shoulders. Excellent forechest and ribbing, good bone and feet. Well angulated
quarters. Came into her own on the move, absolutely sound both ways and keeping
her outline in profile. Would probably benefit fro, carrying a bit more body.
Res CC and Best Puppy was another nice bitch, with again a lovely head and eye.
Good neck, well angulated shoulder and an excellent forechest. Ribbing carried
well back, good length of first and second thigh. Moved soundly and with good
reach and drive. Topline just needs to settle.
