HOWE Bramalodge Alice
Many thanks to the Great Joint for its kind hospitality and generous gift. I used to attend this show every year when it was held on the outskirts in London, in the days of the unforgettable Rene Gale, but hadn’t been since then - pleased to see that it is just as efficiently run today. Delighted to find my steward was Elizabeth Harrop who played such big part in running the shows in the Picketts Lock days.
I was thrilled with the size of the entry and with the overall quality of this very strong variety. Some of the classes were really exciting, notably open dog which I will long remember. I do like to see them move, especially in profile, which wasn’t always easy given the ring size but we did our best.
Temperaments were delightful, most had at least reasonable coat texture and a high proportion were beautifully presented. Bone and substance, as usual, were excellent in all but a few. Heads in general with typical with good eye shape and strong muzzles; one or two perhaps a shade on the coarser side rather than conical.
As with most Dachshund varieties, front construction varied and even some who were decently angulated had what I call rather ‘lumpy’ shoulders with round rather than oval ribbing.
I’m well aware that a number of my winners were well up to size, and perhaps this is something to watch. Some of the imports which have influenced the breed in recent times, notably Ch Starbarrack Diamond, did much to reduce size and improve overall refinement, and it would be sad if this were lost. The veteran dog surely proves it is possible for a male to be a sensible size and yet still unquestionably masculine.
Looking up the pedigrees of my winners I see that all four green card winners and the best puppy are grandchildren of Ch Treis Pinheiros Zucchini who has certainly added a bit of style to the variety. Made my day to watch the Wires do so well in the main ring under Ken Sinclair, well done.
MPD (2, 1a) 1 Howe’s Bramalodge Blue Monday, alone but a quality 6 month pup of excellent type, quality head, super bone and feet, prominent forechest, correct upper arm, slightly steep in shoulder, well ribbed, sound steady mover for such a baby, a shade higher behind than in front on the move but time will surely sort that, has lots of promise. PD (7, 1) 1 Robinson’s Skyswift Tennessee Honey, most impressive young man of great style and tremendous promise, super masculine head without coarseness, well presented harsh coat, plenty of neck into properly angulated shoulders, correct topline, well boned, nicely bunched feet, powerful hindquarters, moved true and looked as if he meant business going round. Good luck for the future. BP and RBPIS; 2 Matthews’ Stanegate Billy The Kid at Sonham, another top class youngster of a slightly leggier type, super head, reach neck, well ribbed, good topline, OK forechest, stood true in front though perhaps not quite the angulation of 1, strong hindquarters, sound mover with plenty of drive from the rear, super presentation; 3 Graham’s Stanegate Shot In The Dark, brother to 2, slightly rangier type at this stage but similar in construction, super head and neck, good hindquarters, not quite the length of stride of his brother but yet another quality pup. JD (6, 1) 1 Adams’ Teckelgarth Gatling, super young dog who should have a really exciting future once he settles a little, in excellent condition, good male head and expression, nicely arched neck, excellent body and topline, balanced angulation, moved true covering plenty of ground; 2 Davies’ Atahira Cantata, quality red of a lower to ground type, I gave his sire Black Tarquin the CC last time and this one has a similar classy outline, OK head, good bone and feet, we’ll angulated, not quite as firm in front as 1 and not in his best coat today, well ribbed, super topline retained on the move; 3 S Billy The Kid at S. YD (7, 3) 1 Clifford’s Sussexdaxi Gooseberry Fool for Ablebody, good masculine head, well boned, scores in body and ribbing, OK hindquarters, slightly narrow in front and could have a shade more drive on the move but was the most ‘together’ in this class; 2 Effer’s Greyhayne Hector, rangier type and rather strong in head, good forechest, scored in neck, correct ribbing, a shade long in loin and not quite the front angles of 1 who was a bit more coordinated on the move; 3 Baldwin’s Hotwire Just In Case, smart dog with an attractive head, good neck and length of ribbing, not quite the bone of above and a shade straight in front. PGD (7, 1) 1 Frampton’s Weinacht Larch at Drakkina, super type and outline and won the class going round, good bone, OK front but set slightly forward, reach neck, well angulated shoulder. Moved a shade close behind but very good reach and drive. Coat could be a shade harsher; 2 S Gooseberry Fool for A; 3 Stockdale’s Derochaise Monterey at Fenwires, b/t in excellent harsh coat, strong masculine head, sound hindquarters with good drive, rather upright in front. LD (6) 1 Chambers’ Cishelvine Just A Kiss with Hotoko, very striking red of a lovely type, low to ground without exaggeration, quality head, plenty of bone, matching angulation front and rear, neck in proportion, correct ribbing and topline, has plenty of reach and drive and keeps his shape going round, in good coat well presented, pulled out all the stops in the challenge to take the RCC against tough competition, good luck for his title; 2 Norman’s Silvae Trade Name, very showy brother to BOB, super head, good bone and forechest, well ribbed back, delightful character, winner scored slightly on front angles and topline today but this one could well end up another champion from this litter; 3 Vine’s Cishelvine Caught Out, another super boy of a lovely elegant type which this line seems to specialise him. Good head and neck, smooth shoulder line, plenty of length, sound hindquarters, OK bone. Not quite the freedom of front movement of 2 but a hard choice between three lovely dogs. Sire of BPB. OD (9) Truly spoilt for choice! When I just judged this variety as a substitute at snowbound LKA two years ago I was very impressed with the young males and several of them turned up again in this class. Delighted to see that maturity has suited them all and once again there was little between them. 1 Norman’s Silvae Klansman, caught my eye as they came in and his super personality with ever wagging tail is the icing on the cake. He has now matured into his frame and settled in movement coming and going, as well as retaining his very smart side gait with plenty of drive. Quality head and body, masculine without being enormous, quality bone, good feet, lovely arched neck. CC, his third; 2 Wharton’s Ch Greyhayne Hooray Henry, half brother to 1, both by Ch Silvae Paradigm, has developed into an all round excellent dog whose great virtue is his balance and lack of exaggeration, super coat, bone in proportion, matching angles back and front. Today not quite the sheer joie de vivre in the ring of the two who beat him but lovely quality; 3 Adams’ Ch Wyldetarn Shoot From The Hip, this dramatically handsome dog is full of style and standing could well have won the class. Super head with a touch of arrogance in his expression, well balanced body, such a smart outline, sound mover. Splitting hairs, I felt winners scored on fore reach and tail carriage today. Both 2 and 3 have produced some very nice youngsters who won well in the lower classes. VD (1) 1 Moore & Coverley’s Ch/Ir Ch Ex Sentia I’m Bond James Bond, sadly the only veteran here today but quality more than made up for that! Such a beautiful type of dog, ideal balance and super conformation, with the bonus of being as near the correct size as you are likely to get. Well in contention in the challenge, perhaps not quite so fluid in front movement as once he was but in tremendous condition at 11 years and ended up BVIS.
MPB (6, 1) Delightful class of cute babies. 1 Binks’ Tannahill Day Dreamer, something about this delightfully chunky 6 months baby really appealed to me, I think it was the super balance between her front and rear connected by a compact body and level topline, pretty head, super bone and remarkably ‘together’ on the move for a baby at her first show. BPB; 2 Howe’s Bramalodge Billie Jean, scopy pup of a different type, quality head, elegant outline, well made hindquarters, quite the showgirl. Not quite so balanced front to rear at this stage put has plenty of time and lots of promise for the future; 3 Frampton’s Bramalodge Babooshka at Drikkina, another smart pup from this good litter, slightly leggier at this stage, excellent neck, coat and hindquarters, compact body, just needs time to tighten a little in front. PB (11, 3) 1 Carruthers’ Stanegate Calamity Jane, lovely quality pup from another very good litter, smart and showy, well angulated, feminine head, enough length without exaggeration, free easy mover, Splitting hairs for BPB, just a slightly different balance but equally promising; 2 Rowe’s Boloria’s Miss Dior, longer lower choc/t of great style, looked super going round, moved soundly, excellent bone and feet, shade longer in loin than 1 but should do well; 3 Phillips’ Tendrow Turns The Right Page, such a smart red daughter of my BOB last time, A Page In Time, ultra feminine in head and outlook, good shoulder and upper arm, reach neck, moved true. Hard decision between 2 and 3, 2 was a little firmer in topline today, when that sorts itself out could go places. JB (4) 1 Clayton-Smith’s Cairparavel Kiss From A Rose, beautifully balanced youngster with just the right angles, feminine head, good neck and topline, enough forechest, moved well when settled retaining her shape. Liked her a great deal, just felt she could lose a few pounds to advantage; 2 Pughe & Fraser’s Greyhayne Harriet at Bystock, half-sister to 1 by Hooray Henry, slightly taller impressive girl with a lot of style, typical head, plenty of bone, the right proportions of ribbing to loin, moved well going round, just a shade narrow in front but very smart and beautifully put down; 3 Gibson’s Allfreys Matilda, attractive bitch of super size, very feminine, good reach of neck, shapely body and strong hindquarters, not quite front angulation of 1 or 2. YB (4) 1 Coverley’s Aventine Amarela, handsome bitch with a typical head, excellent reach of neck, smooth shoulders, good ribbing, a shade long in loin, long free stride, topline firmed up on the move, in good coat, won well here; 2 Clayton-Smith’s Cairparavel Lilac Wine, attractive bitch of a good type, well ribbed back, sound front, not quite neck or hind angulation of winner, as with her sister I think losing a little weight might make all the difference; 3 Sanders’ Knottsrose Mystique, more elegant type with a pretty feminine head, good reach of neck, correct topline. A shade steep in upper arm and not very enthusiastic on the move today. PGB (3) 1 Howe’s Bramalodge Betsy Button, quality strongly made bitch with an attractive outline, good coat texture, plenty of substance, OK angulation, moved well behind. A shade heavy through the shoulders and front but won convincingly; 2 C Lilac Wine; 3 Vine’s Cishelvine Caught Kissing, pretty feminine r/br, well ribbed body, not too keen on the ring today and movement hard to assess. LB (12, 3) Super class 1 McCalmont’s Silvae Trade Secret, yes she’s a big girl, but so stylish and well the class on the move, spectacular outline, super reach of arched neck, ideal topline, well ribbed, plenty of bone and a long smooth stride; 2 Carruthers’ Stanegate Catherine Wheel, very nice bitch with a lot of quality in a more compact package, another with that elegant but not overdone neck which adds a touch of class, correct ribbing and forechest, smart showgirl looking good on the move, slightly preferred winner’s hindquarters. Both future champions I hope; 3 Wharton’s Greyhayne Black Velvet, neatly made feminine bitch of a quality type, her head and eye appealed, as did her compact body and sound well angulated hindquarters, perhaps not the neck of 1 or 2 and didn’t give quite so much on the move. OB (9, 3) 1 McCalmont’s Ch Silvae Trademark, what a star, a beautifully athletic bitch with the most superb conformation, just the right angles front and back combined with a smooth shoulder line and no lumps or bumps, enough ground clearance to do a day’s work without appearing leggy, has a feminine expression and a reachy neck, moved as one would hope from her make and shape and a consummate showgirl. My congratulations to her breeders who have maintained the tradition of producing super Wires one after another and added their own flair for presentation and conditioning. CC & BOB and put up a great performance in the big ring where she was Ken’s choice among tough opposition; 2 Seath’s Ch Sunsong Keep A Promise, really lovely bitch of a different type, lower to ground but without exaggeration, I appreciated her correct size and her sheer femininity, pretty head but still with enough strength of muzzle, balanced neck, excellent topline, good length of ribbing combined with correct length of loin, neat hindquarters, sound mover with a smooth even stride, again beautifully presented and handled. Winner’s front assembly was just set back a little more under the body but that’s nitpicking. RCC over several other lovely bitches. I see her sire Whisper A Promise also produced the BP among other winners; 3 Rowe’s Boloria’s Trick Or Treat, loved this one too, excellent type of Wire with plenty of style, well bodied, in excellent coat, moved true and smartly. Winners scored slightly in front angulation but this would be another very worthy champion.
