I thank Manchester Dog Show Society for the invitation and exhibitors for their entries and support. I enjoy judging Wire Haired Dachshund, a breed which in appearance is well boned, strong and workmanlike.

I was privileged to have many quality dogs and bitches to go over and I was particularly pleased with my Best of Breed, winners and placings.

Some exhibits were carrying too much body cover and appeared weighty which affected feet when standing and action when moving. Some hindquarters were loose, not parallel in hocks and tended to be weak.

Class 803 MPD (5 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: 2920 CARRUTHERS Mrs J Aikton Alexander Of Stanegate a well made and well grown 7 month old who is of satisfying appearance, being breed typical in look with a very attractive head and furnishings. Head is of pleasing length and shape having dark correctly set eyes and ears giving an alert expression. Overall he is of excellent proportions and balance with a general level ness of back which presents an eye-catching overall outline and picture. He is well constructed in front and forequarters which edged him over 2nd. Notable positive movement having a noble head carriage and true front extension with parallel width behind. Best Puppy in Breed.

2nd: 2971 VINE Mrs R M Seton Hacking Jacket at Cishelvine a well bodied 8 month old male who has a pleasing head shape and expression. Sufficiently long in neck which is in proportion to the rest of him. Tends to stand wide and slightly splay in front so needs to tighten both standing and moving. Overall he is well grown in bone and body and presents a well proportioned, balanced picture in side profile. Free moving and has notable action in side gait.

3rd: 2975 WARDELL , Miss T & LAWSON-BALL, Mrs B & SCOTT Mr Arushkhan Gentleman Jack At Valgalad

1st: 2937 GRAHAM Mrs J A & Mr A Stanegate Shot In The Dark an 11 month well grown young male with desirable body and bone development. Pleasing overall length and balance and he impressed on the stand. I liked his head shape, eye and expression and preferred his overall coat and profile to 2nd. True well made front with prominent fore-chest; pleasing angles front and rear with tight elbows in front and well angled hindquarters with parallel hocks when standing. Portrays a pleasing side profile. Moved confidently with a free action and typical puppy enthusiasm; excellent promise.

2nd: 2944 MATTHEWS Mrs A D Stanegate Billy the Kid at Sonham JW a litter brother to 1st and having similar qualities and merits in conformation. Very handsome head. Slightly tighter in coat than 1st but presents a shapely well proportioned and balanced appearance. Pleasing front and rear with ideal parallel width. Tended to be a little unsettled both standing and moving which, today, gave his brother the edge.

Head set on a neck of good length; well made in front with pleasing fore chest and tight elbows. Good substance of  body with better length of neck and less heavy forequarters than 2nd; pleasing overall length with a firm correct top line. Presents an attractive profile with the proportion and balance I like. Moved well enough in front with decent parallel width behind.

2nd: 2926 CHRISTIE Mrs E & Mr C Tannahill Bergen At Decalleigh a 20 month well grown and well bodied young male. One who is more sturdy than 1st and tended to look heavier in front and forequarters. Attractive in head shape, furnishings and expression. Pleasing coat texture. Active and enthusiastic on the move.

1st: 2915 ADAMS Mrs L Tecklegarth Gatling JW a classy looking 20 month old male in excellent coat and condition; he has an eye-catching side profile which is balanced and all in proportion with desirable breed typical characteristics. In profile he is of ideal length and proportions and possesses a head and expression I liked by being ideal in length, not too broad, with desired typical head furnishings. Strong in neck being elegant and of correct shape and length. Sound in front, solid in body with firm level top line and strong well angled hindquarters with parallel good width hocks. Moved soundly, confidently and with a noble head carriage. My Dog CC winner.

2nd: 2923 CHAMBERS Miss C J Cishelvine Just A Kiss With Hototo a rising 2 year old who possesses desirable breed and conformation qualities but needing to settle to give of his best. Pleasing head shape, eyes and expression although prefer shape and set of ears of 1st. well made in front and forequarters, firm in body with well angled hindquarters. Pleasing top-line and compatible underline having enough leg length to allow free, active and positive movement.

1st: 2977 WHARTON Ms L Ch Greyhayne Hooray Henry a well constructed nearly 3 year old male who is shapely, is well defined in outline and who was free moving with pleasing extension in front although not moving as precisely behind as my CC winner. Attractive head which he carries well and he has an alert, intelligent expression; neck of good length set on to a well made body of proportional length. Pleasing coat texture. Well made front, tight in elbows and having obvious fore-chest. Firm substance with ideal length in body and a firm level top line. Reserve Dog CC.

2nd: 2946 MCCALMONT Mr & Mrs D & K Ch Silvae Trader a sturdy 2½ year old well bodied male who has pleasing overall length and proportions. Handsome breed typical head and furnishings set on a strong good length neck. OK front and fore-chest although tended to look more upright than 1st. He has stature in body which is pleasing in length, proportions and balance. Moved with a free, positive action but needing to be more settled in front.

One who has the happiest of temperaments, Moved well and free but would prefer more parallel width behind both standing and moving.

youngster who has plenty of potential and promise. Lovely head, furnishings and expression, pleasing length

 in neck which is set on to a sound body with firm level top line. Well boned and good development of body. Breed typical in appearance and coat; desirable structure foundation giving promise to grow into a quality adult. Really good balanced profile having pleasing angulations front and rear and good width and strength in hindquarters. Moved freely and enthusiastically with confidence and purpose and a self-assured head carriage.

2nd: 2942 HOWE Miss E G Bramalodge Billie Jean a shapely 9 month old who has pleasing bone and body development. Stands well with good leg length and giving an attractive appearance. Pleasing head shape, feminine and typy, although not a mature in head furnishings and look of 1st; well made in front, body and hindquarters. Free and confident movement.

Head set on a neck of proportional length, well made in front with enough fore-chest, good spring, depth and having tight elbows. Well bodied, firm top-line, good length of ribbing. Pleasing coat and coat texture. She has an attractive side profile with the proportion and balance I like. Better mover of the class.

2nd: 2957 PHIPPS Mrs J M Bear Hound At Tufterslodge a 14 month old of similar shape to 1st. Pleasing head shape, well made front with enough fore-chest for age; satisfying overall length, top-line and angulations front and rear. Preferred her coat texture and better free movement to 3rd.

3rd: 2965 ROWE, Mrs J & ROWE Miss R Boloria's Miss Dior

1st: 2979 WHEELER Mr & Mrs P Waggington Aurora a very shapely 21 month old who is breed typical and attractive in general appearance having clean lines and a balanced pleasant well proportioned profile. Pleasing leg length and so has an impressive outline and overall look. Smart, attractive head and alert in expression; head set on good length neck with a firm nicely covered body; pleasing top-line well angled hindquarters. Moved well especially in front and was the better mover of the class.

2nd: 2927 CLAYTON-SMITH Mrs S J Cairparavel Lilac Wine an attractive 20 month old, shapely young

bitch who overall, is of good make and shape. Feminine and typy in head, dark, well shaped eyes and alert in expression, pendulous houndy ears. OK front but would prefer more fore-chest; well covered in body and nicely angled hindquarters. Needs to be more precise in front but looked good in side gait.

Head set well onto proportional lengthy neck, set into well made shoulders and forequarters. Satisfying in body especially her back, firm loin and top-line. Pleasing spring of rib, depth and ribbed well back. Stable nicely angled hind quarters. Good coat and texture; a steady mover. Reserve Bitch CC.

2nd: 2925 ARTHURS Mr & Mrs A Tendrow I Am Legend With Elderkine a 2½ year old smart looking bitch who is similar in look and breed type to 1st and is nicely covered and is firm in body. Attractive head of pleasing shape, furnishings and expression. Pleasing length and shape of neck which is set well into laid back shoulders and onto a well covered firm body. Pleasing overall length and angles front and rear. Moved OK when settled; preferred her settled front extension to 3rd.

She presents a sound, ideal proportioned and balanced picture both standing and moving. My Bitch CC and BOB winner. An exciting quality bitch and great example of the breed.

She extends in front but not moving as precisely in rear action as 1st. Attractive head and expression, strong in neck which is of good length and is set on to a nicely, firm, well covered body which is balanced in angulations and all in proportion. True parallel front, tight in elbows. Presents an attractive side profile both standing and in side gait on the move.
